I'm sorry but you people are rediculous. People never win when they should anyways. This isn't the first time and sure as hell won't be the last. DHP winning was the most interesting thing to happen this year at the Tonys.
Oh and add me too the group of people who think raul's vibrato is terrible. He sounded like a goat.
I am bitterly disappointed in the voting process. Clearly, all of the voters did not see both performances. DHP's part in Curtains is something that a good community theater actor could do. Sadly, I think DHP won on the basis of name recognition.
What Raul did with his role required so much more...The no-name Cuban American guy turned himself inside out and disappeared into Bobby.
Maybe CBS changed the vote after they saw how terribly he syncs his piano playing with that of the one in the pit Raul kind of had a big WTF moment too.
I don't know of anyone else who can sing from their GUT like that that. A goat? Seriously? What does an actor have to do to move you? What more could you want...
Well...I thought Esparza was terrific...in a cypher of a role. It's an observer for most of the evening and then a big, unearned emotional breakthrough (not unearned by Esparza...in the writing).
Also, I think Esparza did himself no favors being so candid about his personal issues in regards to this role. Lots of people don't like watching actors use their work as therapy.
Pierce is absolutely beloved in this community. This isn't a shock at all.
"I'm so looking forward to a time when all the Reagan Democrats are dead."
Still in shock. I have nothing against DHP, I just feel bad for Raul, what an amazing performance he gives in Company night after night and it's upsetting to not see him rewarded for it.
DHP winning over Raul was obscene; possibly the biggest grand larceny in Tony history. As much as I like DHP, that award belongs to Raul. What a major disappointment!
I see what you're saying about the role. And it's obvious a lot of people feel the same way you do. But I have to completely disagree. Bobby does go on a journey throughout the show. Maybe not a conventional, linear one. But he does. And Raul is the only Bobby I've seen or heard that gets even close to bringing that through. And he nails it. When I saw the show, I didn't feel "Being Alive" was an unearned breakthrough. I felt it was majorly cathartic (in a good way).
It's a bitch of a role. An actor can get so lost in it. But Raul doesn't get lost. He nailed it. One of the most troublesome roles in all of musical theatre. He, for the first time maybe, made it work 100%.
He was brilliance, simple as that.
"One no longer loves one's insight enough once one communicates it."
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.
OH, so DHP is better than a goat? BLAH! Btw, Raul doesn't even sound like a goat, what happened to your ears? If you want a goat, listen to Mandy Patinkin, or Bernadette Peters! Yes, it's musical theatre, YOU HAVE TO ACT! They both got a Tony because THEY KNOW HOW TO ACT through singing, not because of her voice! Interpretation in singing is what musical theatre is all about!
Somebody sit in my chair, and ruin my sleep, and make me aware of being alive!
Are you kidding me? Do you really think that the TONY voters... vote based on "who's more famous?" I don't think so. Personally I do not like Rauls voice... vibrato.. ugh. I thought Company was boring... His show is running at 40-50% capacity... not so good. Again... I'm not saying DHP should have won... he was alright... But to say that Raul was robbed and blah blah.. is just not true.
I thought the last 20 minutes for Bobby in this COMPANY were terrific. But up until then? I thought it was a pretty good performance. It's a bitch of a role and I disagree that he made it work 100%.
"I'm so looking forward to a time when all the Reagan Democrats are dead."
I am Very pissed off that raul did not win. i loved him in company. his performces was wonderful. he should have won that tony it was he year to win. DHP should go to Hell. i hate him alot. i did not like him at all. i feel ready bad for Raul. he still wonderful in my heart and always be the best actor on broadway. he should of win....I sill love u Raul no matter what.....Nicole
So you would have based your vote on Raul's voice? Raul's voice is better than Pierce's. It's not about who's show is selling out. It's about performance. Raul's performance is what has kept that show open no matter how many people are there.
