I'll say Memphis. Contact actually had some competition that year, and Contact is 10x better than Memphis.

In my opinion, it was Spamalot. That was my least favorite of the nominees that year. The Light in the Piazza should have won. My second choice would have ben Spelling Bee. I would have even been happy with Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. I know that I can't be the only one who didn't like Spamalot. While it had a few funny jokes, so many jokes were just forced or copied directly from the movie.

I would say that MILLIE and MEMPHIS are tied.
I say Spamalot and agree that Piazza should have won.
I say Memphis. As said before, Contact had The Wild Party and The Dead, Jersey Boys had The Drowsy Chaperone and The Color Purple.
You can at least say those years there were really good shows.

From what I saw, Memphis just didn't impress me from their performance last night, but I don't know the entire show.
I also didn't like Spamalot at all. A lot of people mentioned how they were keeled over with laughter. I maybe chuckled a few times.

CONTACT and it's canned music track. MEMPHIS a close second with IN THE HEIGHTS just behind it.
I would say either Spamalot or Memphis. I haven't seen Jersey Boys so I can't comment on that.
Millie, followed by Contact.
1. Memphis-without question
2. Millie
3. Spamalot.
I actually really enjoyed Contact. A lot of people did. Of all the musicals in the past 10 years that have come under many people's heading of "Not a REAL musical," I thought that Contact was the best of the lot.
In terms of Spamalot, I don't think it's a bad show, it just wasn't the best musical that year. As others said, while it was certainly the biggest HIT that season, the other three nominees were better musicals. Although that was certainly a very good year for that category. Makes you realize just how awful this season's category was.
^^^^
I'm Team Spamalot but I definitely see your point wickedfan. Terrible season.
I haven't seen Memphis yet, but otherwise, my pick would be Spring Awakening.

Weakest are Jersey Boys, Spamalot, and Contact.
I completely disagree about Memphis and In the Heights. They have most things that make a good musical, and even though Memphis can be related to other musicals, such as Hairspray, it is still great. In the Heights is very original and creative, even though some will say it has something to do with West Side story.
I realized I posted 11 years, lol. But I think you guys get what I meant.
Memphis, no doubt. I can't think of one thing I enjoyed or could recommend about that disastrous evening.
Spamalot at least entertained me and made me laugh.
Millie should have lost to Urinetown, no question, but it did have a couple of interesting moments.
In the Heights has a hideous book, but some of the score is pretty good (and the performances were excellent).

I would say Contact because:
a) it wasn't really a musical, it was a dance concert, and
b) it will have no future life at all.
I had completely forgotten Spamalot won best musical. And now I'm befuddled all over again.
Well Eric Idle says he bought that Tony fair and square.

I didn't like Spamalot--wish they had stuck to Monty Python stuff. LOVED Scoundrels and Spelling Bee.
