she would make a good Glinda...not sure if she could sing it though...every time I was happy with how she was doing something vocally, she would get to my favorite money note and then **** it up.

ex.
-- "Forever!" in the Tirade (during octet)...horrible, the rest quite good
--"Museo" (spelling?) in "Hysteria"=horrible.

and just about any other thing that was done by Kelli in a beautiful, full, rich soprano which came out of Katie in a high, thin, undeveloped soprano. It's a shame. Because I did like a LOT of her performance...

and all that I could do because of you was talk of love...

If all you're taking away from someone's performance is that they need to lose weight, you need to check your priorities. I think Katie is a wonderful performer and she has a beautiful voice, not to mention that she's gorgeous. There's no reason for you to try to be cheeky or clever or whatever you're trying to be. You have no right to say anything about anyone else's weight. Worry about your own.

Katie is freaking built. And as any straight man can tell, she is HOT. I love curves and a bit of muscle. Also, she's perfectly smooth. She has no bulges anywhere, proving the she is at her perfect weight.

And I love her acting. Her voice works for the part since Clara is supposed to be so young. As far as other roles....maybe YAGMCB?

I'll bet anything that within a year or two she'll be Galinda. I think she could do it really well after strengthening her vocal chords a bit.

"If all you're taking away from someone's performance is that they need to lose weight, you need to check your priorities."

Honestly, I don't think that she needs to lose any weight. However, I would argue that, if the only thing someone is taking away from her performance is that she needs to lose weight, then clearly her performance isn't captivating enough. If she were amazing, people wouldn't notice stuff like that. I personally feel like she was TERRIBLE, but she definitely doesn't need to lose weight.

Imagine what everyone would be saying about Marilyn Monroe if she was still alive. "God, what a pig! She needs to lose about 40-50 pounds." Marilyn Monroe was BEAUTIFUL and the "look" at that time was NOT for women to be stick figures, like everyone expects them to be these days. Thanks to the supermodels and the actresses who follow their leads, unless a women is a size 0 these days, she's fat. It's a shame. I'd like to be around to hear someone tell Queen Latifa that she needs to lose weight. She another ROCKIN' larger woman who shouldn't change a thing. And Katie Clarke isn't even in their league. She's probably a size 6 or 8.

The diet comment is ridiculous. I'm so sick of seeing undernourished women who look more like bobble heads than human beings.

As for Glinda, if Kendra Kassebaum can play the role, Katie could too. Not to take anything away from Kendra, I appreciated her fresh and original approach to the role, but her voice is not in the same league as some of the other Glindas.

I think the weight comment is ridiculous. She looks fine. Judging from the PBS telecast I found her Clara to be wonderfully acted but I felt that her vocals were a bit lacking. With more training, give her a few years and she could be fierce.

She has gotten a bit pudgy since coming to New York. She just needs a trainer. Adam Guettel would never cast her if she was less than perfectly attractive. He is very "elitist" about actresses bodies. You'd have a heart attack if you ever heard him talk about it.

Who cares about Glinda? Let her do something new and exciting.

I think she has a nice enough voice but she should avoid those demanding soprano roles because she can't really handle them. Her voice has suffered audibly since she began in the role.

Since Adam Guettel said expressly that his next heroine will NOT be a soprano, I wouldn't be surprised if he considers her for Buttercup. She has a nice belt and she's a fine actress who can only get better. After all, she's only 21! Now that would be a coup for her career. Either that or a revival or new show.

I personally feel that Katie did everything right as Clara. She did not copy Kelli, and her voice fit the role perfectly well. Not to mention that she is beautiful, and has every right to be there!

exactly she was a great Clara...she wasn't O'hara but that wasn't a bad thing because she gave a fresh look at it. I think maybe she's tired vocally because I'm guessing that the show is very demanding to do that many shows...so after a good well deserved vacay...I hope she does something fun and new. personally i feel Wicked would be a step down for her...I mean come on going from Piazza to Wicked! But still I think her Glinda would be great. As someone also said if Kendra Kassebaum can play Glinda than Katie will be fine. Kassebaums vocals were very sub par IMO and I saw her twice. I think Clarke would be great but I really hope she stays with Guettel for Princess Bride or maybe do a play...her acting was great! Not too muching she's smokin hot so all you people who want to see a Lindsay Lohan coke whore stick on stage...just go to the movies...in theater we have REAL people!

As much as I think stepping in as another replacement might not be a great idea, stepping into Wicked would probably be the thing to catapult her career into high gear. Think of how many of these actresses no one knew ANYTHING about until they stepped into Wicked. Once they started performances, everyone said "so-and-so is the best Elphie EVER."

Katie would be an amazing Glinda or Christine Colgate!

I never said she was fat or looked bad nor did I say her losing weight was a necessity. Still, it wouldn't hurt!

Her vocals were charming in the role. She has grown a lot better tackling "The Beauty Is". It used to be so much more choppier in the beginning of her run, but now it flows much much better. Everyone seems to love her acting. I don't. She made Clara look like a descendant of Helen Keller's. There were things she did that were adorable. (i.e. Hugging Vicki Clark on "MOTHER!"), but there mostly character choices I found that were annoying. Things that a child would not do. You have to keep in mind she's thinking like a little girl. Would a little girl point at herself and then at her boyfriend on "YOU LOVE ME!!"? A toddler would, sure. But at age 8? 9? Whenever the pony kicked her? I don't buy it. I think she went a little too into it. Another quirk was when she clapped her hands feverishly and jumped around to exude happiness. Little girls don't do that.

Actresses who are playing Clara have to keep in mind that she has to progressively get more mature as the show goes on. Italy is having this effect on her. She is learning Italian in a matter of months. It is quite possible that the doctors, in the 1950's, were wrong about her condition. Maybe she IS progressing, due to unconditional support from the Naccarellis. Something she only got at home from her Mother. By Act II, Clara should be acting a tad less bit infantile, and more smarter, within reason though. I think it's shown in "The Light in the Piazza". Margaret slaps her, right? Instead of crying, like a child would, Clara explains to Margaret what love is to her. What that light is all about.

Just my two cents.

Y'know, I never thought about it that way. But that's a great point.

I don't like her vocals. But I've said that before already. re: What's next for Piazza's Katie Clarke?

But at the same time, I don't think she is supposed to be progressing that much. I think she realizes there's something wrong with her and starts to accept it. In Clara's Interlude, she hits her head trying to find the word she wants to say and when she realizes she can't, she gets up, goes to Fabrizio and tells him he can't marry her because of her problem (actually she just says something like "you just can't!"). So I think maybe she's progressing emotionally, but I don't think she is mentally.

There's also the part during the wedding rehearsal in which she's like "Where's the ring!?"

Progressing emotionally is a good way to put it. She doesn't have those outbursts anymore as much, and when she does, Fabrizio's able to calm her down (as is evidenced after "The Joy You Feel.")

I'm also a fan of Katie's peformance in another aspect because being so child like helps. For me, it was kinda weird when Kelli had that fit in Octet, but you could see that it was normal for Katie to do that, and you almost felt more embarassed for her that way.

She is progressing mentally. She's very quick. She learns Italian in less than a year. Most people go to college in 4 months and can't comprehend the language. When Franca sings "The Joy You Feel", she senses something isn't right. She runs to Fabrizio to reassure her that they won't end up like Giuseppe and Franca. She uses deductive reasoning skills to realize, "something is wrong with me, i am different, that is why they run." by the end of act 2. She didn't know that in Act 1... "I don't understand a word they're saying, I'm as different here as different can be, but the beauty is I still meet people like me." She shrugs off her differences in Act 1, but Act 2, she confronts them. Not only does she learn Italian, but she's learning Latin for Sunday School! (Octet) I think she's banging her head in (Clara's Interlude) because she knows that is the core of why she is different and she wants it to be over with. She hits her head, thinking that will "fix her". Like when the pony kicked her, that "broke her".

Katie Clarke as Christine Colgate? I disagree. Christine has got to have that high belt. Katie has a nice mix, but I don't think she's got that power belt voice. Perhaps she does but we just haven't heard it yet.
