I just got back from the first showing in my area and I have to say that major life points are deserved.
The cinematography was brilliant as were other points of the movie. "La Vie Boheme", "Rent", and "Tango Maureen" were probably among the better numbers.
There were a few moments that I didn't like, though. I thought the whole 'rodger rocking out on a cliff in santa fe' thing...a little bit too much. A few other things as well (such as Mimi's prompt awakening from the dead into full and energetic life) but overall.. very good.
Now its just a matter of tolerating everybody who sees the movie (while knowing NOTHING about the show) and calling themselves Rent fans.

And the end, OMG I did not beleive that she came back to life and saw ANGEL, I know this is HOLLYWOOD and all, but Rasario had the perfect make-up and hair and voice, to be singing something, after she just woke from the dead.
actually I totally disagree, she looked horrible.....sweaty, sick....no she looked just like one would expect her to.
It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story...

- The dialogue was too soft and small when compared to the big musical numbers. It needed more punch to stand up to it.
- Roger almost completely disappeared. In the show, he's the main character but in the movie, he's totally ignored. "roger wants to write a song, Roger does". And that's really it. I feel like the writers messed up his chance at making something of this role.
I did not care for the movie when I saw it a few weeks ago but found myself going to the noon show today at the Cinerama Dome. I want the movie to do well just so they continue making movie musicals. The huge theater was about at 60% attendance. Not bad for a Wednesday afternoon. The "Producers" trailers got cheers from the crowd. as to the film itself I must say I didn't make it to the end. It dragged even more this time around.
Oh ..I also thought Adam Pascal is horrendous in this film and kind f wish they had used someone else.
just got back from the movie and loved it . . . did anybody else think that 'Without You' was much more powerful in the movie than in the show, at least i thought so. Also, i kinda wish they showed the tribute to Jonathan Larson as the first thing right afer the movie ends and right before the credits, I saw the tribute, but was the last one out of the movie theatre, too many people missed it, just my opinion.
Im such a big rent head, and I thought the movie was awful. I felt no emotion during it. It made me cry because I was anticipating it for so long, and I was completely disappointed.
I thought Adam Pascal was very handsome in most of the film; that was one of the few *pure* reasons why I enjoyed it (the impure reasons being the campiness of so much of it).
That said, add my voice to the chorus of people who didn't think it was a good movie. I have no major issues with the source material like many of the other professional critics, but I do have a problem with flat characterizations, lazy and sometimes campy staging of songs, weak writing that includes rhyming dialogue "adapted" for the screen with almost no revision, and (this was the biggest surprise) shots that are blurry and faces that are shadowy when they should be clear. The movie may be my guilty pleasure (for its camp value) on DVD but I wouldn't actually recommend it to friends and family.
I thought the film was okay but had some major issues with it.
First and foremost, the pacing was terribly slow. They should have cut more to shave about 20-30 more minutes off of it. And it had some of the worst film editing I've seen in a long time. Just very sloppily put together.
And, as people have said, some of the moments were just WAY too cheesy...but that's Chris Columbus for you. Especially the Roger WYO sequence.
I though that every single one of the actors did amazing work, and they were the redeeming quality of the film, except for Adam Pascal. He did fine, but he was the only character who, for me, actually did look to old to play his part. He looked 35ish in the movie and it was distracting, and he's not the strongest actor.
But despite the slow pace and sloppy editing, it had some great moments and some gorgeous cinematography, if a bit too cheery at times.
I actually really, really enjoyed Idina, and she was maybe even my favorite part of the film.
I thought Rosario Dawson was great, but I've always hated Daphne Ruben-Vega's voice anyway.
LOVED the way they did both 'Take Me or Leave Me' and 'I'll Cover You'...probably my favorite parts of the movie.

I loved the movie- but i posted some things i didnt like on the reviews forum...(underuse of benny, marks character developement...) but in terms of roger on the cliff...shouldnt he have been like walking down the street in new mexico and showing that against mark waling down 6th st? but i love that song...so i cant say anything more nasty about it

As I said in my review -- I think the film is poorly made but I support it because like Dame, I want to see future movie musicals produced and secondly I think the film does speak to young audiences. I bought a ticket yesterday to show my support (though I went to see PRIDE AND PREJUDICE instead). I hope the film does well.
I wouldn't say that I disliked it, but by no means did I love it.
I found it to be average and tepid, bordering on mediocre. There were some good moments, but as a whole I think it fell significantly short of being a great film.
"And the end, OMG I did not beleive that she came back to life and saw ANGEL, I know this is HOLLYWOOD and all, but Rasario had the perfect make-up and hair and voice, to be singing something, after she just woke from the dead."
You stated you loved everything about the stage play. Then you would know that the movie ended *exactly* the same way the stage show did so I don't understand your problem with this ending if it stayed true to the original stage show.
I wouldn't say that and I wouldn't start counting awards now if you know what I mean. The screening I was at many people laughed mostly because of the Cinematography and CGI breath!
At the End when they arrive with MIMI and the guys appear on the balcony we get this weird cockeyed shot and all of a sudden we are in some B Horror film with Vincent Price (God love him)
WYO Looks like CMT made it and Did ANGEL really see or hear Collins from 200 yds away and around a corner. Get real. They Bastardized the Stage version.
Roger's Flashback was really a flash forward because of the timeline problems.
ISTY was a boring walk down an alley.
And when you cut out Joanne's calls in RENT the music doesn't work well. The audience all laughed. They were all wondering "why does the music stop all abrupt twice??"
They cut how many songs and still made it longer than the musical is if you don't count intermission.
But here's my biggest complaint! It didn't feel like family. I didn't care for any of them!
Very Disapppointed! Now, let's see how they'll screw up THE PRODUCERS movie!
"It's like children's theatre for 40-year old gay people!" - XANADU THE MUSICAL
Michael Bennett; What a great idea! Buy a ticket for Rent and go see something else. That way you support the hollywood movie musical.. but don't have to sit through this awful movie. Oh.. and to the people celebrating the cinematograhy.. you do realize half the time everyones faces are in the dark?
I actually loved the movie very much; I just had a couple of issues with it.
I hated WYO and that whole portion of the movie didn't flow right because of the song cuts. Chris made a major error there.
I also didn't like the last staging of Another Day, just too much, out in the street...made the song seem sooo much longer than it ever has to me.
Your Eyes didn't get me as much as it should have partly because I hate Adam's new version of it, and partly because there were too many close up shots. I didn't mind that Mimi wakes from the dead, we knew that was coming.
I also agree with the person that said that Adam's role was not maximized to it's fullest. His acting was alright, but as a main character it was weird that he didn't impact me like Mark's did. That is less Adam's fault than Chris's though. He did look a little aged but he had AIDS and was a depressed former junkie...in real life people like that don't look so good.
Loved some things and didn't care about others. Seasons of Love and Rent were great, and With Out you gave me chills. In the stage show, Another Day is my favorite song, but with the movie, I must echo so many other's opinions, that it was a waste. Liked the cast overall, except for Idina's take on Maureen. I thought Idina did a good job, I just did not like her Maureen. The star of the show in my opinion is Jesse. Oh my lord, he was brilliant! I saw the show with my boyfriend (who has never seen the stage show) so I had to fill in some of the blanks for him. He pointed out that they mention Mimi had been with Benny 3 years ago, making her 16 then (since in LMC she tells Roger she's 19), so he said that was statutory rape. Leave it to my boyfriend to throw something like that into my Rent the Movie experience!
