Clint's 84 years old, I think we can give him a pass here.
Only on BWW did the purists have a problem with the rap bit. It's been praised elsewhere.

I loved the rap bit with LL Cool J!! It was one of my favorite parts of the show. I also enjoyed Carole King singing with Jessie Mueller and I loved Idina. She has one hell of a voice. I am not sure how many people saw Hugh Jackmans Broadway show three years ago, but he used quite a bit of it tonight From the jokes to the musical numbers he sang to telling the scores of the game that was being played. l love Hugh Jackman, but it was a bit disconcerting to hear all the stuff from his Broadway show on the Tonys.

Well, Ann Harada had this exchange with Lin-Manuel Miranda, sounds like there's back story with Fran

"But the biggest trainwreck of the night goes to: Sting!"
THIS. The two people I was watching it with just stopped and looked at each other with a "wtf" face.
And Clint. Jesus, what WAS that. A fricken mess, and not even a hot one at that.
What happened with Sting? (I had to step out for a bit so I missed it.)
I thought Fran was fine. At least James Monroe Iglehart was shown when they announced his category. I just felt bad for Clint. It's not easy getting old.
Am I the only one to not care enough to watch?
@SNAFU: No you;re not the only one. I was out last night celebrating my Puerto Rican Pride.
What happened with Sting?
Basically, he was singing like Sting. Unintelligible and dull.

Fran strikes me as someone who could be a lovable ditz. I remember her earring falling off during a performance of Love, Loss, and What I Wore. She made a joke about good Jewish girls not piercing their ears and got off stage to quickly retrieve it.
Ann is definitely being loving and not snarky. I guess with Fran every performance is like a snowflake-she flubs and forgets lines. However, the cast like her. When I saw the show Fran lost her shoe and said the F word. It was very funny.
I may be in the minority, but I thought the Aladdin performance was embarrassing. Does Aladdin really "act" like that in the show?

She lost her shoe when I saw it as well but I don't recall her cursing. Just calmly saying "I lost my shoe". It was during the insult game at the ball.
I remember when i saw her in Cinderella- She came flying into the Step-Family's home with a Ball Invitation and it flew out of her hand and slowly glided to the floor and she ended up leaving it on the floor because she was struggling to pick it up. It was adorable and she kept the scene moving and did not miss a beat.
It may be time for Clint to rest on his laurels and hang them up. His place in cinema history is guaranteed Not bad for someone who started in that classic movie Tarantula. His big moment there was, I believe, pulling a rabbit out of his lab coat pocket.

Isn't that pretty much how Aladdin is in the movie?
That number was the best part of Aladdin and if I was coming to NY from out of town it would make me want to see it. The show itself is a glorified theme park show. It was entertaining but other shows were more worthy of a Tony nod - Bullets, Bridges & dare I say Rocky.
Aladdin is not a Lion King . One of Disneys better efforts but still not best musical material.
My sister loved the Aladdin number and is now begging me to take her to see it. She's probably the show's key demographic - a Disney fanatic that loves spectacle.
Exactly my point. The suits at the mouse house also factor in the little kiddies wanting to see it and their parents buying everything in the theater to placate them.

The very same people Roxy makes fun of for wanting to see shows with helicopters in them. His references have always been up-to-the-minute.

Well that Aladdin seemed a lot younger. It was weird seeing a full-grown man act like that.

I thought Zachary Levi looked genuinely angry that Fran threw him under the bus and said that he went too far ahead, so it threw her off. Just my take on it, but it seemed written all over his face.
I thought she said the prompter was going too fast, not blaming Levi for it. I guess I was projecting something different on to them than you were.

Agreed. There are plenty of ways to pull off a big, spectacle-y show aimed at kids without it looking that tacky.
