Wicked 3/24

Show was incredible tonight. Idina was so, so on. Much better than the last time I saw her in December.

Anyway, I'm only posting because in the scene leading up to Popular, Kristin's bed got stuck behind the clocktower-like thing and the two of them were in hysterics and improved for about 2 - 3 mins till the set was fixed. It was amazing.

Aww, 2-minute improv, I love that. What kind of stuff did they say? I'm sure it was hilarious.

I was at the 3/24 show also. It was pretty funny when K's bed got stuck behind part of the other set. Contrary to what some posters have been saying, I thought the two of them handled the blooper pretty well. K's improv ability was hilarious. And luckily they were able to compose themselves after just a couple of minutes.
Since this was the first time I'd seen Wicked, does K always shake her wand after Popular and say "Is this thing on?" and then point it at Idina and say "Did you get mad again? Did you? Huh? Well it looks like everything is breaking tonight!" I wasn't sure if that was part of the script or if she was referring to the bed incident.
All in all, it was a great show...if only Eden had been filling in.

Galinda: So like, Elphie, did you know Boq was a munchkin?

Elphaba: What? I had no idea!

Galinda: Yeah....he told me the other day in gym class. We were learning how to chew bubble gum AND walk at the same time. It was hard....

Elphaba: Wow I wish I coulda been there. But, alas, I was too busy thinking about how the wizard is going to degreenafy me.

Galinda: Really? How do you know he's gonna do that?

Elphaba: Well, I just had this vision that was kinda like a prophecy and he walked up to me and was like....ELPHABA, I am your father. It's true. And I was like, what??? How can that be? I thought you were gay. Aren't you friends with Liza Minnelli, too?

Galinda: Omg, that reminds me once when I was pretending to be sick, I was at Lomans looking for a dress to fit my size 0 body, when this gay guy was all like, "hey don't you play Glinda in that one show?".... and I was all like "Ah, no....don't you think if I did I would be at the theatre right now?"....

(they both laugh)

the bed comes on.

I received this email from some one on a WICKED mailing list who was at the show.

"The cast finishes "Dancing Through Life", and the beds come on for "Popular". Except Galinda's bed only comes on halfway, and backwards. (with the headboard facing the audience, and the shoes in front of it). The girls both hesitate, and then Kristin goes to sit on Elphaba's bed. Idina quickly goes, "What happened to your bed?" I thought Kristin was going to roll over laughing. "I don't know," she said. Then she proceeds to tiptoe/dance en pointe over to where her bed is, and lie down. By this time, her bed is now moving into place, and Kristin is lying on the bed, on her stomach, swimming the breaststroke as it moves.

"What did you, get mad at me?" Idina responds. Suddenly, her bed starts to move, to which she quickly screams and stops it. LOTS of giggles on and off stage.

Very hard to describe, but Ms. Chenoweth and Ms. Menzel pulled a huge coup tonight, and made the audience fall in love very quickly."

Btw, that post had me falling out of my chair laughing catsnyrevival.

For how much people seem to say they don't get along, seems like they have a pretty good time with eachother. Man, I would love to see this show...

On this other board, someone said how they admire people who can ad-lib like that with such timing, etc. I agree, but the problem with all of these Wicked mess-ups is that they let the audience know by giggling. Maybe I would feel different if I was there, but the giggling has to go. The funny lines and ad-libs are okay, though...

They ARE giggly--I saw the show on 3/11 and I don't know if anyone posted this, but during Popular when Idina is supposed to say "Do you want me to try?" after Kristin tries to transform her "frock" into a "beautiful ballgown," Idina started coughing and couldn't get her line out. So Kristin comes rushing over and goes "Hey, are you Ok? Here, bend over." She proceeds to bend Idina over and pat her on the back. By now the audience was in hysterics, Idina was cracking up and Kristin was just carrying it. Finally, Idina got the line out and Kristin goes "Gee, I wish I had a ricola." The audience loved it...and especially loved both Idina and Kristin. It was wonderful and so so utterly entertaining! They're so good together...and Kristin's comedic timing is priceless. I love being able to see them improv like that...wish I could have seen the 24th too...sounds like it was so great!!

That was me who sent the email.

I don't think the adlibs are a hinderance at all. The audience seems to love it every time.

I think I'm going to give up fandom. I don't ever want to wish I could have been at a show where something goes wrong. Life is too short, we've got a real world to change.

I don't ever want to think that getting through a tech malfunction equals "Ms. Chenoweth and Ms. Menzel pulled a huge coup tonight."

I'm actually hopping for a blooper when i see it! It makes LIVE theatre so great!

One way would be to help a blooper along, maybe by throwing a marble on stage during a big dance sequence, that would be really funny or maybe have your friend call you on your cell and maybe you have a Defying Gravity ringtone, imagine the Idina giggling and the Kristin saying, "Oh of course they have your big number even though 'Popular' would be a cooler ringtone if they could figure out how to make it squeak!"

The possibilities are ENDLESS.

"I don't ever want to think that getting through a tech malfunction equals "Ms. Chenoweth and Ms. Menzel pulled a huge coup tonight"

-- by that, I meant that Kristin and Idina made the best of a bad situation. It's live theatre, things go wrong, and yet they were totally on top of the situation.

Seems that things have been going wrong more and more frequently...

They should keep in mind that it's Tony voter season.

You guys crack me up! Giggling throughout the show is not professional theatre, it is a community theatre level production. I love Wicked and the performers, but it is getting old and I cannot believe you don't see that! It is hilarious when you are not expecting it, but when you are waiting for a "blooper," it is no fun!

I wasn't necessarily waiting for it, it just kind of happened. And it's not like they caused the beds to screw up.

I'm surprised people don't see the difference between Nathan and Matthew breaking character in a Mel Brooks musical and Kris-'dina doing it in Wicked.

It's completely in the anarchic spirit of the world of Mel Brooks for character and fourth walls to be broken. In his movies people make direct addresses to the camera rather frequently. (I'm not even going to get into the fact that Lane is in the rarified atmosphere of theatrical clowns who know EXACTLY how much they can get away with and EXACTLY how long they can do it for before stepping right back into the action).

I'm sure it was awesome and amazing for the various people who go see Wicked again and again to hear Kristin reference a Ricola, but that's pretty artless. They're in OZ, for god's sake, and nothing but nothing in the fairly pedestrian structure of the script of that musical allows for that kind of illusion shattering. "Wicked" at the Gershwin does NOT have the same anarchic structure or atmosphere as the Brooks musical and what the gals keep doing is reminding everybody that even they don't buy into the world that isn't, in my opinion, very successfully created on the stage to begin with.

The people who are all giddy over how professional they were to get past the bed malfunction seem to have a different definition of professional. Why, oh why, would it have been so hard for Kristin to walk over to Idina's bed and perform the song there? She could still have managed to do her adorable rolls on the bed, professional Idina could have made room for her and, to paraphrase that crazy old showbiz line, the show would have gone on.

But, you know, the kids seem to get such a kick out of the giggling and the illusion shattering. Why stop now? Apparently, they won't.

Ok, I'm really sorry if I offended anyone by saying that I enjoy a blooper here or there. I certainly don't sit there saying, "Oh please, please, please someone mess up so I can see a blooper!" There are things that happen in live theatre sometimes (such as a set malfunction, tech malfunction, or an actress with a cough)and I like to see how the actors deal with the issue rather than trying to ignore it and act around it (which can get pretty messy sometimes). It just shows us what kind of grasp they have on their characters. I'm not trying to offend anyone and I'm sorry if I did. I'm just basically trying to defend myself at this point. Everyone makes mistakes...even professional actors and actresses. It's life. Updated On: 3/27/04 at 01:23 PM
