I’ve been there numerous times since Bway reopened and haven’t run into this issue. I usually just take the escalators, but I’ve sat in the lobby for hours charging up, and even used the bathrooms on the conference floors if there’s no conference happening (since they aren’t locked like some of the other floors).
Well, they are a business...to make money. While I've certainly spent some time there, I'm a bit surprised they arent more stringent on non-customers.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

Super easy to circumvent this.
Make an Open Table res for their bar or restaurant. Show it to security downstairs. Voila.

Real talk: Please tell me the OP was high when they posted this."
No. They’re just a troll (intentionally or not, who knows) who posts here every once in a while to bemoan how unfriendly Times Square is for pedestrians, or why there’s not a closer park near the Theater District. They’ve been handled rationally, but they themselves are completely irrational, so it’s best not to engage.
At least this time the discourse they sparked was productive: sounds like it’s still mostly welcoming to non-hotel guests who need somewhere to duck in for a charge or a bathroom break.
Just remember, the OP is also the same one who said Bad Cinderella was gonna be the best musical of the year. That did not age well LOL!

It’s not irrational, it’s perfectly rational. They could be demolished if someone in power wanted to do it and start to fix the theatre district. This hotel also has a terrible terrible theatre inside it that hasn’t had a hit in 20 years.

Do you realize that people pay hundreds of dollars a night just to stay in that hotel? It’s never going away! It brings too much revenue to the city’s economy. Also, the Marquis theatre is a good theatre. It’s the shows that have been in there recently that weren’t hits! You can’t blame the theatre itself for not having a long-running show. Was it a mistake to demolish the theatres that used to be where the Marriot is now? Absolutely! However, that was a long time ago and people have moved on! The building isn’t gonna be demolished anytime soon! I think it’s time you move on from this latest fixation of yours!

It does bring up a valid question: has a theater ever been reconstructed after opening? Like, could they go in and try and fix the theater and make it more intimate feeling. I guess they sort of did that with the Lyric and Harry Potter or even the Broadway with Here Lies Love.
They could transform it for Guys & Dolls if there are absolute intentions for the current London production to transfer to NYC.

There’s only so much a theater can transform. To take out orchestra seats and put in an entire floor space that has elevator lifts, etc, that’s going to cost millions upon millions so I don’t see that happening.

At least it’s possible but the cabbage needed to make it happen is just not in the cards sadly!

Who? A dictator? Thats not things work, my naive, delusional friend/troll. NO politician is ever going to try to shut down a profitable and legitimate business for reasons of anesthetics.
What exactly are you trying to FIX? Get rid of all the crap street vendors in times Square that prey on tourists, that would make a difference I'd support.

We were just there two weeks ago and I cannot tell you the number of times (literally countless) in the past that we've gone to the 8th floor and never once I was stopped or asked to show a room key or anything else. We just tend to walk in with a purpose and go straight to the elevator and head to the 8th floor. We've had lunch there a few times as well, never an issue for us. When we do go, more often than not, it's just to use the bathroom, sit for a few minutes, and we head on back out.
I am a Marriott Rewards Platinum for Life member and for the past 30 years I have stayed at the Marquis numerous times a year. Only since the pandemic have I ever been stopped to show my key to gain access to the hotel elevators and that is primarily later at night (after midnight) and in the mornings. When I have stayed at the Algonquin and want to run into the Marquis for a bathroom break or anything else, I just flash my room key that shows Marriott. And regarding them tearing it down, that is hilariously stupid. It is generally at or close to 100% occupancy and has numerous trade shows and meetings weekly. The last time I went there in March I didn’t make reservations until the last minute. The rate was 1400.00 a night for a standard room (I got a break because of my status) and only paid 700.00.

OMG!!! Do you have a problem with flight attendants all of a sudden? Did one of them forget to give you your peanuts on the plane? Stop posting these absurd message topics!

FWIW, I've spent MANY mornings and afternoons in the lobby on 8th floor recently killing time before work/shows/etcetera. Never had a problem. I did see them escort an unruly gentleman out one morning, but I have never been questioned or asked to show a key.
