I believe it was Gallagher as I also saw the show back in March and my friend has a picture with him in it.

Yeah, Gallagher is 22, Bashoff is 26.
Bashoff is ADORABLE.
He played the gay kid on Judging Amy.

JGJ does have basically the identical jacket lol. I thought my roommate and I were the only people who noticed. Creeper points to you too!
I can't believe BB is 26!!!

Is the picture of Mortiz on the Broadway.com SPRING AWAKENING site of John Gallagher Jr. or Bashoff? I can't really tell.

The pix of him AS Moritz seem to be hard to come by. However, they did re-shoot the rock star poster but no on seems to know when it will be released.
I've seen them both and while I loved them both, Bashoff wins out for me. I adore his choices, and he plays them beautifully. His suicide scene is one of the most beautiful moments in musical theater. I never cried there for Johnny. Like a baby for Bashoff. Those You've Known is even more beautiful with BB.
And it is freakish how much the two of them look alike.

dramamama611: I can appreciate your opinion about Bashoff's interpretation of MORTIZ. However, after seeing him in the role, I can only say that no one can play Moritz the way Johnny did, he created the role, nurtured it and brought him to life. That is not to say that Blake is not talented, on the contrary, he is very talented-and is finding his footing, trying to make it his own. That is all he can do. I feel however, he is the best replacement choice for Gallagher. To an untrained eye, he is almost a mini-Johnny. And to anyone who has never seen Gallagher in the role, I feel he is terrific.
But especially after being at Johnny's last performance,{The most incredable performance Gallagher gave in the role & the most amazing night I have ever spent in the theater} there is only ONE Moritz in my heart.

I agree with silversurfer. I found Blake to be severely underwhelming in the part.

I think it's foolish to speak of it as though it were a contest.
I have seen both and love both for different reasons. My hat is off to Blake Bashoff for turning in a outstanding performance. He had big shoes to fill and is doing so quite nicely.

It's actually very rude and disrecpectful to think of it as something of a contest. Obviously there are certain people out there who are never going to be happy with anyone playing the role of Moritz aside from Johnny Gallagher, and obviously there are people out there who can deal with someone new covering the role.
This is slowly going to turn into an "Idina vs. everyone who ever played or will play Elphaba"-type of ongoing argument. I know it.

Of course no can play the role like John did, they are not the same person, two different people's interpretations come from two different people's experiences. You can state your opinion without attacking someone as having an "untrained eye" you don't know what kind of experience they have. I second Wanna Be A Foster silversurfer2, get over yourself
I just remember Blake from the HBO Families in Crisis where he played the altar boy who got molested by the priest, oh HBO, good times!

I absolutely bawled like a baby when I saw Blake. He was so good, and I'm definitely going to make another trip to New York to see him again.
And dramamama, I was sitting behind you at the show on December 26th!

I'm sorry, but Mortiz? If you're going to get that defensive it might look better for you if you spelled the name right.

While I felt that some of Blake's characterization was over-acted, he was able to make me empathize with the character and drew emotions out of me. That's a good performance in my book.

I've seen 3 of the Mortiz's (Gerard, John, and Blake), and Blake happens to be my favorite. It may have been because it was refreshing to see a new interpretation of the role, but Blake really hit it out of the park. I loved all of his singing, and some of the new acting choices he brought to Moritz were amazing. He's like John, but so much better.
Don't cut my throat, many people disagree with me for saying that, but, hey, to each his own.

Blake's amazing!
Gerard is my favorite Moritz though. He brought out the most emotions in me - a real winner.

DRisLove: When you saw Gerard as Moritz was Matt Doyle Melchior? That's the show I was at and it was really different but as someone said earlier, "refreshing" in a way. I thought they interacted really well and Gerard had a great voice.
