There is lots of precedent for this - one that quickly comes to mind is THE KING AND I revivals of both 1978 and 1983, both of which were recreations of the original 1952 production. Yul Brynner, who won in 1952, was obviously not eligible but the subsequent actors were - and in 1983, Mary Beth Piel and the director of the re-creation were both nominated for Tony Awards.

CABARET may or may not be eligible for revival and Alan Cumming will likely be ineligible for Best Actor but there is zero chance, I think, that Tony Nominating commitee will deem the other actors not eligible.

^ Ah yes! The Mary Beth Piel rule! It's only fitting that Grams saves the day!

Whoops, I meant BEST REVIVAL. Sorry about that, everyone. And why wouldn't Michelle Williams get nominated for Best Leading Actress?

"Why wouldn't Michelle Williams get nominated?"

Why would she? Have you seen her perform in the role yet? Not all famous actresses should get or deserve Tony nominations. It's earned.

What I mean is I don't see why she would not nominated due to political reasons.

Not qualifying wouldn't necessarily be political, if the revival of a revival rules tripped the Tony committee's wires as a disqualifying factor.

Now t/d/b/a haterobics on here.

The 1987 revival of Cabaret used the same creative team as the original production, and it was nominated for Best Revival of a Musical. However, I'm not entirely sure if that production was a total recreation of the original. The Drama Desks even nominated Joel Grey and Hal Prince this second time around.

I was about to argue that that revival had an advantage of time and distance from the original production that this does not, but yikes! 1998 was longer ago than I care to think.

I really hope Williams will be excellent in this. What an exciting year for the Best Actress category!

I like your imperturbable perspicacity.

I will say, while I'm pretty awards-obsessed myself, I think CABARET and Williams/Cummings/Mendes/Marshall are enough of a name to sell this show. While it'd obviously be nice for Williams to be recognized, if she wins or not, or even if she gets nominated or not, shouldn't take away from her actual performance. After all, Nicole Kidman's performance in THE BLUE ROOM has the utmost respect from those who saw her, even Kate Burton has spoken about being part of the nominating committee that year and thinking it was such a shame she didn't get in.

As far as revivals of the same production being eligible for Tonys, Fiddler of the Roof would be a precedent. The 1976, 1981 and 1990 productions all used the original direction, choreography and designs. The first two even had original stars re-creating their Tony-winning roles (Zero Mostel in 1976, Maria Karnilova in 1981). They were eligible for the Tonys and the 1990 production actually won Best Revival.

Cabaret was Roundabouts most successful production so its not surprising that they brought it back, I doubt it'll run as long as the original but it'll have an extended run for sure.

That selfie is hilarious/great/exciting.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I feel like this one of my coming full circle moments. My parents took me to see Cabaret not long after the Tony wins back in '98. It blew my mind in ways that a teenager in the Midwest wasn't used to. I'm coming back to see it again around Easter and the excitement and joy I'm feeling are so delightfully overwhelming. No matter how this show is, I know I'll be happy.

16 years older, AssHole...

You should only hope to look that good at that age.
