CONFIRMED: Audra McDonald-led GYPSY to begin previews Nov 2024 — Page 6

There is zero chance the Arthur Laurents estate is going to allow his script of GYPSY - considered one of - if not THE greatest book of an American musical to be re-written

Exactly, lol. What is usually considered the greatest book of a musical is not going to be rewritten.

But few know that Christopher Durang secretly wrote a treatment of Gypsy before he passed away and had it delivered directly to Audra. Sentiment will tip it his way for sure. Can't wait until the 2025 Tonys!"
Man, I would have loved for Durang to do a parody of Gypsy.

If someone so much as hovered a pen over the script of Gypsy, none of us would have time to feel the warnings before the sun exploded.

If this revival happens (and I have my sincere doubts), I actually can imagine some book tweaks being made. Specifically I could imagine them changing some of the vaudeville references to the Black Vaudeville Circuit. But I can't imagine any rewrites that would rise to the level of a newly credited book writer.

Laurents left VERY specific instructions in his will that not a single word in any of his works can be changed without the express written permission of his literary executor (David Saint).

I heard it was New Orleans flavor. Audra’s been down this path before with Porgy and Bess. She knows when people see it, they will fall in love with it.

Yes that was a rumor on here a long time ago

Yes because I was the one who said it. It’s happening.

What the hell does Gypsy have to do with New Orleans?

This comment wins. I laughed out lout. And I agree that unlike Cabaret, the various "revisals" of which were made by the still living book writer Joe Masteroff, and were generally seen as improvements - the book to Gypsy has remained unchanged for decades, and like the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, should be left untouched and not retrofitted for modern sensibilities. That said, I don't think anyone would complain if Laurents' book for West Side Story got some light retouching.
There have been black Roses before. It's a musical. If Audra McDonald plays the role, the production doesn't have to be realistic treatment of time and place.

It makes perfect sense. Rose’s goal is to make June “Little Miss Swamp Queen” and will let nothing stop her while they travel the city with their alligator, Caroline.

I'm a little bit surprised there hasn't been an option available to license a stage version based on Tony Kushner's screenplay.

I have a feeling that it has found its way (unauthorized) into various school and community theatre productions…

About as much as Pirates of Penzance has with New Orleans, I'd say. I have no idea if the latter will work, but I think talented people can find themes that resonate.

What do you mean a New Orleans flavor? Gypsy isn't even set in one place for more than 15 minutes at a time. You need to put down the crack pipe and seek help.

They must be on tour with the "Zatarain's Dirty Rice Traveling Vaudeville Show."

Worth noting that there’s a website at gypsybway.com that’s behind a password exactly like the Appropriate Belasco page was before it announced. Can’t say anything to the New Orleans of it all, but it’s coming and I would bet it’s announcing very soon.
