"Despite rumors to the contrary, McDonald tells ET's Nischelle Turner that she will not be returning to Broadway to take on the iconic role of Mama Rose in a revival of Gypsy premiering during the 2024-2025 season."
Adding "during the 2024-2025 season" makes this a rather specific kind of denial. It reminds me of when it was announced that there were no plans whatsoever for a production of Square One.

I hope based on the evidence you’ve shown across this board, no one takes your word at face value. This is not how this works. This has been a rumor for basically a decade. Can it’s more clear now that all of that is more likely wishful thinking and conjecture based off her performing songs from the show in her concerts.
Yes, Audra McDonald was going to do Gypsy, but then heard about another actress who would be doing something else that season, and Audra said, “Oh no, I won’t win the Tony. Shut it down.” That is a normal, realistic thing to have happened.

Yes- Hello Nicole Scherzinger.
You can’t pull out of something that was never happening to begin with.
Yes we all made it up. I’m also wondering if it’s not happening now but potentially will happen in the future.

I can't think of any shows next season with a "guaranteed" Best Actress in a Musical winner. Who would she be afraid of losing to?
It's equally possible that:
1) This was never happening to begin with
2) This was happening and now is not
3) Producers want her to do it, she's trying to negotiate, and saying no in the press is a tactic.
It doesn't really matter which of the above is true. Every show in development is "happening" until suddenly one day it's not. At every moment of every day, a so-called high-profile theatre person is talking out their ass.

So you’re deflecting from the fact you were wrong, misinformed, or lying by… impugning Audra McDonald’s character? Christ.
No deflection here. Theres something very fishy about this whole situation. It was bold for that woman to ask her about something that wasn’t even confirmed. Audra could be playing coy to not get ahead of the producers. I mean, it would be a weird way to announce that this was happening right?
im not impugning anyone’s character rather than stating facts. The woman wants to win.

What's she supposed to say? "I officially declare that I will not play Mama Rose in this, nor any other season, for the rest of my life. No, no, never, the end"? Just to assure you that the rumors of this production were false?

A whole lot of shows haven't been announced yet. I know of at least four unannounced that are coming in that all have major lead actresses.
Not that this is a believable reason re: her 'not doing the show this season' anyway.

To be completely accurate, it was the ET article writer who added the "during the 2024-2025 season."
The reporter started to ask, "You're about to go back to Broadway in Gypsy--"
And Audra said, "Oh, no, that's just a rumor."
"It's not happening?"
"It's a rumor. I read about that in the New York Post too."

Yes we know them too, spider woman, Tammy Faye, Betty boop, and queen of Versailles.
Count ourselves thankful most of yall just have keyboards, not qualifications. Broadway stans are never going to beat the “don’t know how anything works” allegations.

Well, of course not, and MemorableUserName cleared things up nicely. I certainly didn't intend to imply anything even remotely negative about Audra McDonald or anyone else!
Two different drafts have been written by different writers and Audra and the creative team are in decision making process

And then they'll engage in a winner takes all, game of musical chairs.
I hope David Mamet is one of the people writing this new book.
Did I miss a post about Gypsy being REWRITTEN?
Whoever's doing that is about to have years of bad karma from Arthur.
