Didn’t get a photo but the new subway ad just has a tagline, the title GYPSY in huge letters, and the photo of the four of them. Audra & Danny names in small print with the credits at the bottom, no AUDRA GYPSY.
The advertising is woeful so far. They should be shouting their greatest asset- Audra- from the rooftops. Other shows do a proper photoshoot with cast in period correct costume, this should have done the same. Just wearing regular dresses feels lazy and uninspired.
I hope it’s not a taste of things to come with the actual physical production.
I find the subway art elegant but I’m genuinely shocked at how little they are marketing Audra in it. No name? And a face that is so tiny and the same size as her co-stars?
This is a complete departure from the Sam Mendes/Bernadette Gypsy and Patti Gypsy which basically were marketing their names and faces in the style of Gypsy.
In this case, it looks like they are really marketing the show. That is an interesting approach.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
To me it’s just odd that I’ve only seen the two extremes advertised: AUDRA GYPSY, and now this which somewhat hides her.
They can’t advertise AUDRA GYPSY to the masses because the masses need more context.
As mentioned before, the attire is probably a deliberate thing to appeal to those who know nothing about the show. To me the pic of the 4 of them just looks generic, maybe it’s more appealing to the masses? idk.
I mean... the LuPone revival art was just a production photo of LuPone rather artlessly photoshopped onto a blue background. And once the Peters revival was in full swing, they dropped the artistic title treatment and also just put in a production photo of Peters (or a photo styled to resemble one).
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
This just says to me, "this is a musical you've most likely heard of, this is the general vibe and it's starring these people." Y'know... like most early key art for musicals.
I think people here are demanding a lot from this production.

I probably don't know what I'm talking about (and honestly, I'm fine with that), but it reads to me like they are afraid of the material. Like they think people either don't know or don't care about Gypsy, so this is all about showing elegant, attractive people in a group to lure people in without knowing anything about the show. I don't get it, but, again, I could be all wrong or just wrong about what sells best.
No offense to Audra McDonald and Danny Burstein, but I wouldn’t look at a poster with them on it and think “Wow, this show looks glamorous and sexy.” They look like the people they are, in dressier clothes.
I agree with Kad that this production is being scrutinized for every decision they make. Frankly, in a way that feels, well, a little bit

racist. (Hidden because the Totally Not Racist™️ posters on here get all frothy if you imply they’re being even unconsciously racist.)
Anyway, I think this production is going to be excellent and I stand by liking the marketing so far. To each their own.
