He didn't do anything. With all the hype he created, and knowing his reputation, he was disappointing.

I only watched the opening monolgue, which was good, and the last half hour, which wasn't. The "special material" writers listed were a mixed bag. On the good side, Carol Leifer and Richard Jeni. On the ghastly side: Rich Vos. Perhaps the least funny man on the planet after Dennis Miller. And no Bruce Vilanch.
I too noticed that Bruce was missing. Hmmm...
I thought that the monologue was pretty good. It gave me several real laughs. The cheesy lines of Billy Crystal consistantly made me smile, but I don't recall any real laughs.
Generally after the opening monologue I don't think there should be a host.
They're always running over time, so the intro's and crap just end up being cut anyways.
Chris Rock was not an impressive host. I don't think he connected with much of the audience. I found most of his jokes to fall flat or were just not funny. In trying too hard to provide acerbic humour, he just proved to be painful. I'll be surprised if he is invited back for an encore. I'm glad that Billy Crystal has found success in his one-man Broadway show - but, he was sorely missed last night.
I thought overall he was bland and that he took a cheap shot at Jude Law.
Billy was NOT missed by me. And sadly, I STILL saw too much of Whoopie in that one segment.
I thought Rock rocked. And that he did very little aside from his opening monologue was part of why the show came in so short--when lately has there been a 3 hour 10 min Oscar night??--so kudos to him and the writers/director, etc.

I liked the opening monologue. Hence my new signature

Some of his material was right one but a bit risky for an Oscar audience both in the room and on the tube. Wasn't he also one of the consulting writers? By far, not in my top ten.
i thought he was good...not great, but good.
and he didn't take a "cheap shot" at jude law.
he made fun of everyone, even himself.
other oscar hosts have poked fun at the industry and nominees, fellow actors, etc. in the past why all the sudden defensiveness this year.
it's not like he told jude law to go fvck himself.

I didn't think he was funny. The whole Catherine Zeta-Jones bit was a waste of time.
I was bored and put off and when they showed the Johnny Carson tribute, it made Chris Rock look like a cheap no talent. I usually like Chris Rock but I think his material was tasteless.

I thought the CZJ bit was pointless as well.

I thought he sucked. I thought the dig at Jude Law was mean, stupid, and was the point when things went from ok to bad.
The bit with Adam Sandler or whoever it was was deadly & should not be shown again as it violates the Geneva Convention re torture
yeah, that thing for Jude Law was mean, and I think he was a bit too long with his jokes i kept thinking "JUST BRING HTE AWARDS PLEASE!"
but overall I thought he was funny
but agreed Mr roxy, the Adam Sandler thing was BAD
I find Chris Rock's humor hit or miss, but last night was a miss. In his defense though, while I didn't find the Jude Law crack particularly funny or tasteful, I don't think it was any worse than him talking about Colin Farell and Russell Crowe, or him and Denzel (which was FUNNY). At least he was self-deprecating, but I don't think he singled Jude out, unless I missed something.
But that Sandler bit was painful to watch, and overall I was not impressed with Chris.
Hey might actually want to look at the other threads since there is already a thread about this
I think the AMPAS should release a DVD of all the painful moments & the Sandler bit should be Chapter 1 followed closely by the Disney production number from years back
it was mean too, because I was really expecting Catherine Zeta-Jones to come out..cuz I love her and wanted to see her..
The Snadler bit was one of the most painful things I have ever watched. Beyond horrible.
I really liked Chris Rock. His opening was hilarious. The footage at the Magic Johnson theatres had me laughing out loud. I've been saying the same thing about Jude Law being in EVERYTHING for a year now, so I'm glad he said it. And Type-A-Tiff said EXACTLY what I was thinking about the Jude Law comments. When Chris used himself as an example, he was letting everyone know it was all in fun. Remember how long we had to endure the Jack Palance push-up jokes? Or Meryl and her multiple wins or Meryl and her accents? And how about the annual nod to Jack Nicholson for simply showing up regardless of a nomination? It was getting old. What Chris Rock said about there being very few true "stars" was true. Truth is the basis for his comedy and usually he says what we're already thinking and is not afraid to include himself in the joke. I thought it was quite refreshing and far more interesting than the same tired industry jokes. There will never be another Johnny Carson, so why bother comparing ANYONE to him? I hope Chris Rock is back again. I was happy for the numerous changes in the format. It made me interested in actually watching the entire presentation rather than just the announcement of the winners.
But I must say, I wish Ellen could host just about everything. The year she hosted the Emmys was my favorite awards program I'd ever seen. She was friggin' brilliant!
Chris did a great job of staying true to his style while being respectful to the Academy. Jude Law? Who is JUDE LAW? I could see people getting upset if he said something about Clint but who cares if he said something about Jude Law. That's the thing about Rocks' comedy...no one is exempt.
