I agree with Sonofrobbie, Lysacheck just seems llke a total jerk in every interview I have seen. He also sometimes seems so determined to not be seen as "effeminate". When are the skating organizations going to realize, you will never be able to de-gay mens figure skating!! Even if most of the skaters are indeed straight, it was, is, and always will be seen as a gay sport. Sit back, relax, and enjoy it's gayness.
And he's all limbs akimbo! During his fancy footwork section he looks like a weathervane in a storm! And those shoulderpads last night??? Total Frankenstein's Monster. If he skated to Puttin On the Ritz, I would have sh*t myself.
"Sit back, relax, and enjoy it's gayness."
That should so be it's new slogan!! LOL
Thought I'd give y'all a bit o eye candy courtesy of the Canadian women's mag Chateleaine

I also read that BrilloBoy was the mouthpiece of the Canadian Skating program.
Sheesh...didnt they give us Brian Orser
(I was also surprised Orser wasnt in the opening ceremony considering his Olympic run and coaching the likely ladies gold medalist.)
To be honest, I think Men's figure skating was viewed as a gay sport mainly in US. I am asian and in Asia, Men's figure skating as far as I know, wasn't being seen as particular gay or feminine like Men's ballet. And I think it applies to Russia and France as well. It's just a sport like other sport with some artistry, like gymnastics.

During the interview video they showed with Lysacek, I remember him talking about the moment he decided on skating, and how it's known to be effeminate (or something to that effect) and how it doesn't have to be, etc..

I try, Lauren. Oh, how I try.
I think Sanda's right about the whole American view on figure skating. I think one major problem in America is anything that is considered artistic is considered 'gay'. Not, of course, that there is anything wrong with something seeming gay. But, in the American psyche, these things are considered less than. Less than masculine (which OF COURSE is the ideal), therefore less important.
Many other countries respect art, dance, theatre, etc. and recognize the importance of such pursuits to their culture. Stojko, being Canadian, I guess feels a little to American and gay adjacent.
yeah, growing up from a different culture then moved to US, I can tell American males are more self-awaring about their muscularity and afraid of being judged in that aspect than people from other country.
Taking an example of Takahashi's hair cut and outfit, you can see young guys dressed like that in Japan, China and Korea and won't being seen as a big deal. Most of them are not gays. Young people from East Asia in recent years are highly influenced by Japanese animation pop culture and the characters in these works are almost gender neutral.
I also found it odd that they made sure to use the word "manly" during a piece on Lysacek. The man isn't out as far as I know, but the gaydar surely goes off when I see him!
Sonofrobbie...LOL at the Drag Queen speak! That's a really old term. We were using it back in the early 80's! (I'm not a drag queen!)
Robbiej, you should join the American mens figure skating team...you will show the world what a masculine sport figure skating really is.

I remember an interview a few years ago, in which several (American and Canadian) former men's skating champions, all of whom had children, were asked if any of their sons had shown an interest in the sport. All of them said "no, thank-god" or " no, he's into hockey, thankfully" or variations of that thought. I thought that was so sad.
I first heard the term 'shade' from my gay (non-drag) black friends. I felt so cool and street the first time I used it.
:) That's where the term started. I was a surburban black boy who moved to the city and heard it and was like "What"?!!
Ok...back on topic!! lol

It was a horrifying crash from the Romanian skier, in particular.
That last crash was awful. She just kept falling. I can't believe she walked away.
I can't believe they didn't immobilize that girl.
1. Ouch
2. The up close and personal camera with Lindsey Vonn and the tears was just ewwww and felt very staged
3. SHUT UP "AHHHHH" COMMERCIAL.
Those wipeouts were absolutely vicious. I thought the girl who hit the flag which caused her one ski to fly off would be really hurt. I agree, that she should have been immobilized. The crass part was that the guy who got to her first first removed the ski from the area. BAH!
I feel bad that Lindsey Vonn is being used as NBC's meal ticket. This is just the first event and I am so sick of her, but it is not her fault.
Colbert Nation is going to be happy tonight with the speed-skating result.
Ouch. They just finished here. I feel for that poor girl that barely got out of the gate and wiped out.
I am also a bit over the Vonn coverage. And the tears just seemed to be a bit staged. And she was able to run over to that guy with a sore shin very easily. But I guess when you have won gold, you don't feel it. But it was just a bit much and just seemed phoney. I could be wrong and hope I am.
uncageg, you and I are on the same page (not sure if you saw my post of posts up).
That air Shaun got on his first run was ridiculous! Really excited for him!
