It was not the best episode of the season so far, but you'd have to watch the entire episodes to know that and not "tune out" with 1/3 of the episode to go. I agree the cameos were great and that Alec Baldwin brought his master comic timing to everything he touched. He's overdue for one of the Mark Twain prizes at this point.
I just have to ask WTF was with the bit where Ed played a queen reviewing Halloween candy?!

That opening skit was AMAZING. Not only was it hilarious, I'm really happy SNL realizes that yeah, they actually have a problem with diversity. And I hope they really do fix it.
I am really surprized at some of the choices they made over what stays and what goes after Dress! I though Cartoon Catchphrases was just so poorly written.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I thought the opening was sort of strange. But, I did love "What Does My Girl Say."

I've decided - SNL does two things well: current event commentary and parody. The "What Does My Girl Say" skit absolutely had me cracking up the entire time. That was genuinely funny. The talk show talking about disappointment with Obama but how the guests would still support him was also funny. The opening was funny. Otherwise, the skits felt kind of flat. Stick with current events and parody - that's where the comedy is.
They used to do really funny sketches. I think their recurring characters outside of Weekend Update used to be better and more interesting. Was the older casts just more daring or the writers were stronger? I don't know which is the answer, if either is.
Snafu, I was confused when you mentioned Cartoon Catchphrases here at first because it hadn't aired yet. Once it came on, I new what you were talking about, and you were right. It was pretty dumb and not funny.

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
Totally understand about timing and the need for fillers. Show can run under or fast- understandable.
But this is a NEW episode. Should be new material. Especially when that meth commercial went viral and had to see it on twitter and FB feeds all week. It gets old quick.
What I am saying is that they should then create stock commercials or film quick bits or inserts if that is the case- or repeat ones that were not played JUST 2 weeks prior. it comes off as lazy and the general public just says 'again?' I know they are pressed for time all week- but repeating the same commercial so quickly for regular viewers is kinda like ' we already saw this- why ?'
If i can see 20 variations of pistachio commercials, that make me laugh every time- SNL can surely make them too. They are the masters at it. Some of those pistachio commercials that aired last night were actually funnier than some of the SNL skits last night.
i think at 40 years of this- certain things just need spicing up. Including hiring a black female. I miss Ellen Cleghorne.
The What Does My Girl Say bit was fantastic. I have watched it a couple of times laughing each time. Kerry was fantastic. I did laugh at the cold open.
I also thought the Shaq and Kenny bit on Weekend Update was funny. (As was Angela Merkel - in an absurdest sort of way)
