NOW things got interesting.
Chess was snubbed out of a 4th slot there. Based on the overall noms, this is clearly a race between CATS and Ragtime.
Surprised that BUG didnt make it, and I guess thats due to Every Brilliant Thing sneaking in? I thought Marjorie Prime had a shot along with BUG for that 5th slot, and would have pegged Proof or Joe Turner over Every Brilliant Thing there.
Supporting Actor in a Play: no Elliot Levey for GIANT, and i did NOT see Brandon J Dirden here. Hes such a fine actor, and thought I didnt see him in Godot, I am happy they remembered him amongst his starrier costars. I did think Cheadle could sneak in here, or maybe Ben Ahlers in a DOAS wave, but leaving out Levey and including Dirden is definitely surprising.
Supporting Actress in a Play: the biggest snub lies here, JUSTICE FOR LINDA EMOND. Kara Young and Cynthia Nixon did fine work, but its Emond whose absence shocks me. I also thought Jessica Hecht would get Dog Day's recognition here, and I remember people thinking she might win this when that show opened, crazy how a month or two changes things. I thought Emond and Hecht would edge out Burke and Aya Cash (though its hard to complain about recognition for national treasure Burke).
Supporting Actor in a Musical: I would have recognized Harcourt over Andre de Shields, but the only real surprise here is Bryce Pinkham edging out Max Clayton--a welcome surprise, because the ONLY thing I liked about Chess was Pinkham.
Supporting Actress in a Musical: I'm not surprised they snubbed CATS here, but I imagine the masses will be taking to the streets. I AM surprised Hannah Cruz snuck in, because shes in CHESS for 11 seconds, and if were rewarding small parts, Mackenzie Kurtz does a hell of a lot more with her time in Schmigadoon.

Boy, I'm feeling awful smug about correctly predicting Will Harrison to get in over Brody and Bernthal. Might be my favorite nom of the morning!

While there are some nominations I was hoping for that didn't happen, I'm really happy about:
- Aya Cash - I've loved her since You're the Worst and found her performance in Giant breathtaking.
- Nicholas Christopher - not a surprise, but this man is putting in the work and can't wait to see what he does next.
- Joshua Henry - He should have won for Carousel (and his performance in The Wrong Man continues to live in my memory) and I can't see how this isn't finally his year.
- Sara Chase - I saw her in a Boston regional production of Bat Boy 20-something years ago and have been so happy to watch her star rise.
- Hannah Cruz - a breakout star in Suffs, The Connector, and Only Gold getting her due for great work.
- Ben Levi Ross - Also excellent in The Connector and, of course, in Ragtime. He's got a hell of a career ahead of him.
- Ali Louis Bourzgui - Excellent as Tommy and as Orpheus in Hadestown and a magnetic presence in The Lost Boys.
- The design sweeps for Cats and Lost Boys. Both transported you to their own (very different) worlds.

I think “Chess” was praying for a f*ck ton of nominations this morning to help them out. Crazy for a show that started so strong."
Not just Chess, but, like, who is on the Tony Nominating committee? I'd love to find out more about who nominates, because when all the love goes to one or two shows, it feels like we are getting into the same issues the film industry had, where the nominating body gets too siloed into its own perspectives. That's why a lot of those CATS nominations didn't happen, either."
The committee list is public and it’s a pretty sizable, diverse group.

Bryce Pinkham got a terrible role and chose to shout his way through it, giving what I thought was a terrible performance and the worst thing about an infuriating production. So I can only laugh at the nomination.

Peter Friedman was nominated for Lead Actor in the original production. So not too surprising.

I can’t believe people thought he wouldn’t be nominated or that Jim Parsons would be nominated instead of him. He got a full on mid show standing ovation at the end of River Deep Mountain High when I saw it. And it was EARNED.

So stoked about Hannah Cruz! I also didn't get the buzz around Tempress (who was pretty mediocre when I saw Cats), so not super shocked to see her miss.
My last minute Bernthal-to-Harrison prediction swap paid off. Radcliffe-to-Brody less so.
Featured actor in a play matched my personal picks exactly (but not my predictions!) barring the extra nom for Dirden
Hsu and Dratch noms were not really on my radar (especially Dratch)

I know the # of nominations has very little to do with the eventual winner, but it feels to me that Two Strangers' path to Best Musical is dying.

I believe this rule has only been in place for a few years, and I do think it has changed some of the nominees:
The Nominating Committee shall be permitted to discuss the qualifications of the eligible candidates for all categories for up to a maximum of two hours immediately prior to voting to determine all nominations, but shall not, in any event, take any “straw” poll or otherwise informally determine or attempt to determine the likely voting results.

its always interesting to see the nominators cut through alot of noise/hype. Of course Layton Williams was going to get nominated. No, they were not going to nominate 11 Jellices (though I am surprised they only nominated one).
seems wild that PROOF wasnt nominated for....ANYTHING?
not sure i can yet see a ton of clues though about what might win...

I'm pretty bummed Lea didn't get nominated but understand her character was not the best showcase for her acting. What I'm even more surprised about is Chess not getting a Choreography nomination, but Ragtime did. Wow. 🤯 Especially since I thought a lot of the dance numbers were reminiscent of Funny Girl (which did NOT get nominated for Choreography). 🤷🏻♀️

Can't believe Lorin Latarro didn't get nominated for Choreography for CHESS.... very surprising.

A lot of it has to do with campaigning. Unlike say the Oliviers in London, the Tony awards are at least partially driven by campaigning. I know that Punch chose not to campaign (mainly since all the cast and creatives are in the UK and did not want to have to fly to NYC to carry out the campaigning duties). Ditto Goold and Dog Day Afternoon.

The original also had Coalhouse and Tateh in leads, and both got nominated.

Setting up things on a dinner table can earn you a nom for the Lost Boys. OhShoshana!"
Rude to simplify her performance to just that. She’s singing her face and holding the relationship of the core family together with that performance. Get a grip.

Haven't seen Rocky Horror, but it didn't seem to get much better reviews than Chess. Even here people complained about things. So wondering what moved the scales for it over Chess? Maybe more fun even if flawed?

9 shows and 0 noms is a pretty damning stat. I’d say she was worthy of a nom at least twice throughout the years (Chess and Heart of R&R).

The biggest surprises of the morning to me are Dirden and Pinkham.
Despite the huge haul of noms for Lost Boys and Schmigadoon, Two Strangers got in everywhere it was expected to so it's still definitely a three headed race for Best Musical.
I think the biggest news coming out of this morning is that Revival feels like Ragtime has more of a legit shot than it did a day ago because it overperformed IMO and Cats definitely underperformed.
Play Revival and Play seem pretty locked up for Salesman and Liberation but we'll see.

There’s only two eligible actors and I’m not sure anyone thought it’d be a shoo in for tech awards., though.
It’s mostly just a bummer for buzz.
