NOW things got interesting.
Chess was snubbed out of a 4th slot there. Based on the overall noms, this is clearly a race between CATS and Ragtime.
Surprised that BUG didnt make it, and I guess thats due to Every Brilliant Thing sneaking in? I thought Marjorie Prime had a shot along with BUG for that 5th slot, and would have pegged Proof or Joe Turner over Every Brilliant Thing there.
Supporting Actor in a Play: no Elliot Levey for GIANT, and i did NOT see Brandon J Dirden here. Hes such a fine actor, and thought I didnt see him in Godot, I am happy they remembered him amongst his starrier costars. I did think Cheadle could sneak in here, or maybe Ben Ahlers in a DOAS wave, but leaving out Levey and including Dirden is definitely surprising.
Supporting Actress in a Play: the biggest snub lies here, JUSTICE FOR LINDA EMOND. Kara Young and Cynthia Nixon did fine work, but its Emond whose absence shocks me. I also thought Jessica Hecht would get Dog Day's recognition here, and I remember people thinking she might win this when that show opened, crazy how a month or two changes things. I thought Emond and Hecht would edge out Burke and Aya Cash (though its hard to complain about recognition for national treasure Burke).
Supporting Actor in a Musical: I would have recognized Harcourt over Andre de Shields, but the only real surprise here is Bryce Pinkham edging out Max Clayton--a welcome surprise, because the ONLY thing I liked about Chess was Pinkham.
Supporting Actress in a Musical: I'm not surprised they snubbed CATS here, but I imagine the masses will be taking to the streets. I AM surprised Hannah Cruz snuck in, because shes in CHESS for 11 seconds, and if were rewarding small parts, Mackenzie Kurtz does a hell of a lot more with her time in Schmigadoon.
