Re: Dratch's nom, I saw her post-opening and she had the audience eating out of her hand -- batting every call-out back with aplomb. I think her performance might wildly vary based on the volume of call-outs in the audience (if no one had been talking, it probably would've been pretty monotonous), and that might impact people's perception of the performance.

Play looks like a race between the British import, GIANT, the Pulitzer winning and v American Liberation, or the slighter but funniest option, Balusters. Revival will almost surely go to DOAS.
I think its Josh Henry's year, and Caissie Levy's, but Im not sure whether its Lane's or Lithgow's. And I really don't know what they are going to do with Actress in a Play--Manville seems most likely. Laurie Metcalf will surely win for DOAS (her snub for Bear Ridge somehow makes that feel even more preordained?).
The rest is all over the place. Alden Ehrenreich or Chris Abbott? I can see an honorary nod to de Shields but Bourzgui enchanted the critics. I genuinely have no idea which of musical supporting actresses picks up steam, I guess Lewis is most likely of the bunch, but I really was not impressed with her either time I saw her play this role.
I will go on record to firmly predict that DOAS takes Play Revival, Lane takes Actor in a Play, and Manville takes Actress in a Play. Also, there's not a chance that Liberation doesn't take Best Play.

I think Lost Boys takes home Sound/Light/Set, Jellicle gets Costumes, Choreo, Direction, Revival, Ragtime collects Leading Actress, Actor, and a featured performance, Two Strangers gets Score, Schmigadoon gets Book and Musical.

It didn't rack up performing nominations, but that was always going to be harder with it and it's worth noting that the only performer to be nominated for this production in any major award, off or on Broadway, has been de Shields."
I think the buzz was so strong that many thought Moore, Harcourt and maybe others could get in. Only De Shields getting in feels like an underperformance for a show that many thought might lead the pack in noms or at least top Ragtime in that regard.
But it wasn't a bad showing. Obviously still has a good shot at winning. I just thought Cats was pulling away in the revival category and now it feels close again with Ragtime"
Did anyone check on Quizking? Sorry that Sydney didn’t get a nom

I think Whitney White shocks Mantello by winning for director of a play.
Provided LIBERATION wins best play, I feel like it has to win at least one other category.

It wasn’t. Tempress doesn’t sing the song well. People come expecting a certain level of performance on that number and she doesn’t blow us away. It’s sad, but it’s true."
She received standing ovations after I have seen it. But agree, she isn't the vocalist people expect - but she does make the song her own and brings her unique take.

I agree with most of these (hoping for Nichelle Lewis for the Featured performance as I’m rooting for Layton Williams for featured actor
But that still begs the question: what’s winning Best Musical?
It feels like momentum is in Schmigadoon’s favor right now.

While it's likely that Featured Actress goes to Metcalf, I wouldn't be surprised if Betsy Aidem surprises us with a win.
I'm not predicting that this will happen, but it would not shock me. She was incredible, and if DOAS didn't happen this season, the award would be Aidem's very easily.

Not at all. Plenty of shows have won with less nominations than other shows that year. Two Strangers only had two options for actors etc. - and is the ONLY fully new score and book. It's the thing to beat - it and Schmigadoon."
Though we know how much you hate Lost Boys, you’re publicly delusional if you think Two Strangers is the show to beat. Nominations alone, that sentence doesn’t even make common sense."
NOPE. It's you who are delusional Ensemble95. I see the show for what it is. I'm not a creative or producer on it. You're the only one who comments on my opinion. There's a reason you do.

Originality has been favored in this category for decades now, so TWO STRANGERS it is.

Is Schmigadoon nominated for Best Score another “Pete Townsend for Tommy” argument?

I think Bradly Dean is more deserving of the Best Featured Actor in a Musical nomination than Bryce Pinkham. Dean is a vocal powerhouse and the only person in the show who can maintain an accent.

I'll add to that to say I think her acting (and this is also the fault of direction) is way off. After the song, as people FINALLY touch Grizabella, she stands there and smiles. It's the show's biggest payoff moment, when she is FINALLY accepted again. It should be earth-shattering, not pleasant.

This feels a bit like 2023 when a flashier musical (Some Like It Hot in that year) tops a quieter show (Kimberly Akimbo) in nominations and everyone starts thinking the wind is blowing towards the bigger show only for Kimberly to still clean up when the awards happened.
However, Two Strangers is not as beloved as Kimberly so I do think it's a closer race than it was that year. And of course the other big difference is the two big revivals are going to win so many of the other categories.

I am a fan of hers but don't think it was due to hate. She was adored by almost everyone in "Funny Girl" and given credit for "saving" the show. It is just too bad she did not originate that role because she probably would have won the Tony Award. She just got beat by better performers this year, stuff happens.

10 of the last 15 Best Musical winners have been adaptations. Just two years ago a middling-reviewed Outsiders bested Suffs.
Two Strangers has felt like the presumptive favorite or even the inevitable winner in a weak season and voters do not like inevitable winners unless they are truly undeniable. And I'm not sure it is.
In a generally unexciting year that is making a lot of the industry nervous, Schmigadoon's easy, nostalgic musical theater comforts and laughs and inside jokes may go a long way.

this feels about the time that this thread goes off the rails so i look fwd to the predictions game in other threads (before they too go off the rails).
ill say that my predictions are different than my preferences... i was shocked Temptress didnt get nominated but I would not have included her at all (and if picking anyone from CATS, it would been Nora Schell). Betsy Aidem is another good example-- i saw Liberation off broadway a year ago now, but I remember her speech like it was yesterday (and I thought she was award worthy in Prayer for the French Republic too). Id give it to her hands down, but for a play that closed vs a juggernaut talk of the town revival (plus a whole other leading performance that was pretty impressive too), I have to think it goes unfairly to Metcalf.
important to remember this is all a bunch of ppl making preferences that are no more valid than our own (and with their own biases and self-interested motivations to boot).

9 shows and 0 noms is a pretty damning stat. I’d say she was worthy of a nom at least twice throughout the years (Chess and Heart of R&R)."
Same for Paul Alexander Nolan; 8 shows and 0 nominations.

I never bought into the Sydney hype for a nomination. There's just not enough there in the roll for it to actually be nominated. He does what all Tuggers do, be hot and sing well.

While this production of Ragtime features some stunning performances, the other elements (direction, design, etc) are not top-tier, and not what I'd hoped for in regards to one of the greatest musicals of all time returning to Broadway. The strength lies in the writing of the show itselfand the cast. Jellicle Ballexcels in more areas."
Ragtime would actually have my vote for direction. I’d have a lot of trouble choosing between it and Cats for revival.

Just an embarrassment of riches in the best actor and best actress play categories.
Grateful for a season with so many outstanding performances to recognize.
