Today's matinee was cancelled. According to the Broadway Covers Twitter account, it's due to cast illness. No word on tonight's performance.

Yep -- I had friends that had tickets. The House Management team was coming out to talk to people as they got there.

I wish I were there. I love seeing understudies, standbys, and swings.

The second show hasn't even started yet. I heard that only 2 people were out for the matinee.

Not true. They were all on at some point this weekend but there wasn’t an all-skate performance.
Sun Matinee: Edwin Bates (Usher) and Jon-Michael Reese (#6)
Sun Evening (I was there): Kyle Ramar Freeman (Usher), Zachary A. Meyers (#2 - Track Debut!), and Jon-Michael Reese (#6)
Yesterday: Edwin (matinee)/Kyle (evening) as Usher, Mars Rucker (#1, both shows), and Jon-Michael Reese (#6, both shows) - I was at the matinee
Apparently this was their first five-show weekend of the run, so by tonight, they were all pooped.
I will say, Kyle tonight, HOLY CRAP! I have seen him as Usher 10 times now and, I don’t know who he prayed to, but he gave THE performance of his life tonight. I cried at shows end for the first time in a while

Posted: 10/9/22 at 9:52pmI was there tonight and can attest to the same thing. I think Kyle is amazing I wonder if they had been in the role if they would have won the Tony. I think they have a stronger performance.

Having seen this show now 22 times, it’s important to know that each understudy is basically their own Thought creation including individual costume and mannerisms. Yes, they fit the dialogue as written, but everyone adds their own flair and personality.
Thats why I ride HARD for anyone to see this show regardless of who is on - and keep going back, because I don’t think I’ve ever seen a show where the understudies can create new and exciting little nuances.
Example: One of my favorites was when Mars Rucker was on as #1, who is Whitney Houston during “Tyler Perry Writes Real Life”. When the applause on her entrance was tepid, she scowled at the audience and stomped her her as if to demand applause from an adoring crowd to raucous effect.

Has anyone tried rush (digital or in person) lately? Seat locations? Thanks in advance!

Depending on the day, sometimes you will get seats much better than others. I've gotten front row orchestra, extreme side mid-orchestra, rear orchestra and front row mezzanine. RARELY does the supply of rush tickets run out and I've seen them as late at 90 minutes before the show. The digital rush is far superior in my opinion because, although you pay $9 more overall, you'll get to see the relative location (Usually it says the section or "X" rows from stage) and the tickets are digital. Plus, the box office pulls from the same pool of rush tickets and they won't tell you even the relative location until you pay.
If you are offered box seats, chances are they are at the end of their rush supply and SAY NO. (You miss so much from the boxes - I don't know why they are even sold)

Wow, thanks so much for those details! I get bad vertigo in the mezz so I'm going to try digital rush for tomorrow then so I can at least attempt to see where. Thanks again!!

Just saw the show again and LOVED it again.
Kyle was on for Usher along with Jon-Michael Reese as Thought 5 and Mars Rucker as Thought 3.
Jon-Michael was a solid Thought 5, but I did find myself missing Jason Veasy.
Mars was a great Thought 3! They were totally rocking it the whole show! They have an amazing voice and I would love to see them as Thought 1 because I know they would KILL IT during A Sympathetic Ear!
Kyle is just fantastic as Usher. He has such a gorgeous voice! I would say Jaquel is a better actor, but Kyle's a better singer. I'm so happy I got to see him.
This is probably my last time seeing this show and I'm SOOOO glad I was able to go back and see it one more time!

Did anyone attend the Big, Black and Queer Night on Thursday?

Just read this essay. I felt it was a little unfair that I am now considered by this author to be racist simply because I didn't buy a ticket or wish to see the show. Is this kind of audience shaming unique? Or does it happen a lot? The author also bemoans the fact that the tickets are so high, and that the audiences that would most benefit from seeing the show can't afford it. Which is very true but also a question for the producers.

Quote:
“broadway’s racist history is its present. white audiences couldn’t handle a strange loop and the industry doesn’t allow for people in marginalized communities who want to see it—and for whom it was made—to afford it. it’s a vicious f*ck*ng cycle.”
I don't consider myself a racist if I didn't want to see this show. There are plenty of shows that I have no desire to see -- and it is simply a question of appeal. My ticket budget is limited. The "I'm not okay" sounds a bit like Diep Tran's recent similar query about "Leopoldstadt" -- which she since apologized for and walked back.
Ah well.

I did! It was a lot of fun. The cast went FULL OUT and I haven’t heard so much response and applause during the show since the first time I saw it back in April. Bob the Drag Queen hosted a great talkback with the entire cast (minus Antwayn Hopper, who was out that night). A lot of great anecdotes from the cast, including a few about the history of the show, the actor’s impressions of the audience, and some funny moments. (John-Andrew Morrison recounted a particularly saucy anecdote from the Playwrights run where a heterosexual couple in the front row who got audibly *frisky* during Inwood Daddy).
After the show, Bob and Peppermint were outside talking to fans as well as the cast. Everybody seemed to just be riding high, even Jaquel, who admitted to not feeling particularly well and “almost called out after the first number” but stated that the power and response of the audience helped him power through (quite well) and he was visibly moved at curtain call.
