Pre-Covid to have a Broadway show cancel a performance was exceptionally rare. Now it feels common place. Maybe A Strange Loop feels a little more than others but clearly there is a systemic issue at play here that is not the fault of any particular show.
Personally though, I think it’s time we now move on from asymptomatic testing. The world is quickly moving on.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Think the problem with ASL is there are 7 extremely integral and specific roles, with 4 understudies covering 3-4 roles each. It's not like a big musical where you can have a split-track performance and a larger bench from which to assign understudies. DEH was a similar situation, and by the end I believe they had more offstage covers than onstage performers.
I do not understand how they can cancel a show as late as the audience turning up. Everyone’s tests should be in way before that point. It’s so disrespectful to the audience.
From my understanding with Mars is that they were out sick for almost 3 weeks due to COVID, then didn't return and is now on vacation through closing.

Whenever I'm in production and we're testing every day, I'm thinking, "Y'all know we're the only ones doing this, right?" I mean good to catch cases quickly, but no one else is.
I'm coming in town for closing night and am starting to regret scheduling this. Adore the show, but am pretty anxious about this getting cancelled at the last second.
I got a rush ticket for tonight but how do I find out if the performance is cancelled? I don’t see it on sale on Telecharge but am also not sure if they cut-off online sales at a certain point in the day.

Call Telecharge and they can possibly contact the box office if they don't know.
I just went to Telecharge and checked several other shows and there are still tickets available for tonight. I would call Telecharge Customer Service 800-543-4835/ 212-239-6210

Jason is out tonight, and with Antwayn out as well, unless JMR comes back tonight, the performance may be off since they each only have two covers (Kyle and JMR)
(Although, if I’m lucky and fortune smiles, I’ll be able to see Kyle as #5 tonight and cross the last of his U/S roles off my bingo card)
EDIT: Two minutes after posting, tonight’s show is officially cancelled as of 3:56pm

What a bummer! Thanks for the update. Does anyone know the process of getting a refund for a rush ticket?
It's unreal they're essentially going forward with only two u/s for the rest of the run if Kyle is planned on being Usher for most of the remaining shows.
FYI, JMR posted on IG that he is still testing negative but is very sick. So I doubt he's able to go on anytime soon.

I called Telecharge and verified my order number and information and they refunded me. I couldn’t do an even exchange because it’s a rush ticket and so there is a price differential. I ended up getting the last $59 Orchestra rush for INTO THE WOODS tonight since I’m already here

I really like this show a lot. With that said, they should have brought in another cover or two months ago to avoid these situations. Kind of like what Company did last year.

Actually, there are shows still testing every day. I know one that is just using the home type tests now.
Looks like the matinee is going on. Not sure who's on for who as both Hopper & Veasey are out.

Two little birdies told me that the matinee is going on, but with a special concert version with Michael R. Jackson performing as Usher - and that this is the contingency plan for right now as opposed to cancelling shows

Essentially, the remainder of the run is sold-out. So I'm sure they're doing whatever they can to avoid cancelling.

The plan for this weekend is Jackson as Usher, Reese as Thought 5 and Kyle as Thought 6.
