Just because it's Merriam Webster doesn't mean it can't get specifics about race wrong. What they are describing is racial prejudice. A belief cannot be racist. But the moment that that racial prejudice is verbalized, or say, written down in a Broadway forum, it all of a sudden has the power to hurt. That is racism.

What doesn't make sense about it? Lots of people are looking for entertainment on Christmas Day and with only a limited number of shows having performances, one that does will stand out. Wicked is a few tickets away from being sold out tonight."
Yeah, shows need to have a performance on either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
I know of some actors who’ve preferred to have Christmas Eve off and then an 8pm on Christmas Day.

Unless they cancel the matinee last minute, I'd assume today's shows are on. Just a matter of what understudies are on for today.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
2pm matinee has been removed from Telecharge, so I think it’s safe to say it’s cancelled as well. The evening show is still up, so maybe they’re using the matinee to have a put-in.
It was mentioned that they had a understudy rehearsal last night. So a put-in this afternoon makes sense
Hopefully they can have their shows resume starting tonight.

Oh no. My gosh, it doesn’t end! This is also typically the most lucrative week of the year for shows. Feel bad for the investors too. Let’s hope they all get better soon and hire more understudies so the show could go on! Get well all.
Due to continued illness within the company, this afternoon’s performance is cancelled. We apologize for the inconvenience. We will provide updates regarding our 12/26 evening performance as they are available.
To me, that absolutely sounds like they're doing a put-in today.

Doubt it. These cancelations are not normal. It’s probably a lack of ready coverage being that they JUST opened. A standby is employed for a reason. Especially knowing Audra’s attendance on Porgy.
(we also don’t know if it’s indeed Audra who is sick, unless I missed something)

Audra herself posted she was sick over the weekend, while she was doing the show but Joy was out.
I know they just opened but understudies should be prepared from the absolute jump. This really sucks since this week is one of the most lucrative for Broadway but I'm sure they're doing the best they can. I get why people who paid a lot of money to travel to come here to see it would be very pissed tho.

This is an industry-wide issue and not a Gypsy issue. Understudy rehearsals don't happen to any extent before a show opens.
The understudies might also be sick, which would explain the multiple cancelations. Hope everyone gets well soon. I had tickets Monday, but I'll grab a ticket for sometime next weekend when everyone is back and healthy and on their A game. I can't imagine the kind of hell it would be to try to perform this show with the flu or covid.
I do believe the standbys should be ready from the jump since they often cover one role or set of roles. Audra and the Strippers each have their own dedicated standby.
Other understudies are usually supporting actors in character parts or ensemble members and when getting a show off the ground, it seems fundamental that the main show/role is the production and performer’s focus. Also, there are limits to how much a performer can be rehearsed each day because Equity rules
Sometimes there is a baptism by fire, like when Nicholas Christopher went on as Sweeney the first time while already playing Pirelli.
I don’t think there is any really correct way to go about this because sometime illness just loves to throw a wrench in everything.

There’s all sorts of reasons understudies may not be ready enough for the show to go on. The most likely scenario in my mind is that most are ready, but due to the volume of folks out, they may just not have enough rehearsed to cover/split tracks. The principal understudies are almost definitely ready to go on; the real issue is ensemble, when actors are covering not just one track, but multiple. And if there really are that many out sick, they’re likely prepping split ensemble tracks that have them performing a show nobody performs on a nightly basis.

There's several reasons why understudies and standbys aren't ready to go on during previews and right after a show opens. They rehearse during the day during the preview period. The show is frequently changing during previews. Lines changed, choreography tweaked, spacing adjusted. To have to go on without proper rehearsals or a put-in is incredibly nerve-wracking. Not to mention going on as the lead in a show without the necessary rehearsal time. Considering it's known that a good chunk of the cast and crew were sick last weekend lends to the likelihood of several people not being able to perform now. Having one person go on is one thing, but to potentially have several (5-6) understudies and swings going on without a rehearsal is insane to think it would operate smoothly.

FYI, they did sell rush tickets for tonight's performance. So hope that's a good sign.

I doubt anyone would want to see the show tonight if there are like 6 under-rehearsed understudies/standbys. And the amount of people who want a refund due to the star potentially being out would be substantial, so I doubt it would be worth it to go on.

Hugh Jackman never missed a performance of THE BOY FROM OZ. Every couple of months the show shutdown for 2 weeks so he could get rest. The entire company enjoyed this perk as they were properly compensated for this Jackman negotiated deal. At THE MUSIC MAN, his understudy Max Clayton took over during his absences and to nice acclaim.

Yet they've already cancelled three shows during the busiest week of the year for Broadway. I doubt they want to cancel more.
