For a show this big, one or two illnesses just a couple days after opening night can essentially shut the whole thing down. I wouldn't be surprised if their first understudy put in was scheduled for this morning, too."
Yep. An underrehearsed person going on could cause serious injury (to themselves and others) depending on the technical nature of the production. It's not a matter of merely knowing the lines and being able to sing the songs.
It's also a reminder of the perils of opening a show this close to the most lucrative time of year, when opening night parties can still be "super spreader" events (not merely for Covid!) and now there's a lull in adrenaline after being in rehearsal, tech, and previews since September.

This is incorrect. PREJUDICE is judging a person's character on the content of their skin. RACISM is using one's power against someone based on that prejudice.

Everybody on these boards declare in definitives but that hardly makes anyone a barometer on the subject on which they're speaking. And I'm sorry I do get angered when a mediocre performance is hailed or not called out. And again this kind of thing is not unusual on these boards, but I have a feeling you're mad at me because I'm calling out an actress of color."
You are welcome to state your opinion. If you choose to "call out" someone for being mediocre, that's also fine. But there is no need to be angry at the critics for having a different opinion than you.
Just bought tickets for Christmas night this morning! I’m hoping the show is able to go on, but definitely not at the expense of the cast’s health. Understudies and swings are rockstars, but they’re only human, and this is a tough time of year.

Based on show-score.com, this board and my own reaction to this show plus the anecdotes of others in this thread I believe that the noise around this production reflectssomething.
I don’t mind that the show got raves as I said before this I kind of low key hoped they’d be kind because it’s not good for Audra or the Gypsy brand. But you can hold a gun to my head and I’m still not going to pretend that outside Audra the production had the same magic theLuPone production did as a whole (just go and watch Booyd Gaines and Laura Benanti in their roles there is a high quality bootleg).
And any name calling associated with this, especially some of the disgusting earlier comments re: suggesting senile white gays etc. is so ridiculous and unacceptable. I refuse to accept this childish viscous emotion it’s among the worst behaviour I’ve ever seen here and it’s not ok."
Is it the senile part that has struck a nerve with you? Maybe white gays of a certain age is more appropriate?

Joy could be blue, pink or purple. Rooting for a performer to get bad notices is a poor use of your life, regardless to what’s normalized on this board. I don’t like everything I see on Broadway, but I don’t come here to bash things in hopes that others will also bash. I find that behavior tacky. State that you don’t like something and move on. We can respectfully disagree on theater without becoming inhumane.
I won’t dip my toe into the racism convo. I know exactly how that plays out on these boards.
I'd be real leery about buying a ticket a few days after opening night for any Broadway shows these days. It feels like almost every show has to cancel a performance due to illness soon after opening due to opening night, parties, etc and then not having the understudies ready to go yet. Kind of a post-Covid reality.
As a general rule, I consider the final preview of a show the last REAL chance you have of seeing the full cast together on stage. It’s a total crapshoot after that day.

Actully, no. But the whole conversation is too silly to keep up. Suffice to say, prejudice can involve race but may be related to anyting and has more to do with one's reaction to something than how one treats the thing one is prejudiced against, whereas racism is distinctly about...race. It's right there in the word.
Probably the first review I agree with. I personally didn’t love the production but understand it and get it. I still don’t think it’s worth the outrageous prices Bway is charging nowadays but it is what it is.
Does anyone know how long she’s contracted to do the show…and can Sheryl Lee Ralph replace her?

It is never appropriate to judge anyone's behavior or opinion based on a person's age, color, or sexual orientation. I can't believe that you don't realize how gross you're being by doing exactly that, even if in your mind you're punching up.
Argue against the opinions, not a person's completely unchosen group membership.
To address the “outrageous” prices: they are outrageous. But, I checked Telecharge and you can see Gypsy in the last couple of rows in the Rear Mezz for $69 for some performances. I saw the show from there and it’s fine- maybe better than half of the Orchestra which the Mezz overhangs and cuts the sight lines in half.

Can others who have sat in rear mezz chime in please? I have friends contemplating those seats, but they are finding the Seatplan photos quite discouraging.

I could see everything from the last row including Rose’s Turn and everything played out front.
It does feel a bit far at times but I still quite enjoyed it and it’s honestly not the worst rear mezz on Broadway.

If anyone uses the discount code GIMMICK, starting in January there's side front mezz for $90.50 (or, if you buy at the box office to avoid the $15.50 in fees, $74) on weeknights.

Actually yes.And it is hardly silly. Racism is about power. It's the reason white people cannot correctly say that black people are racist against whites..

More rules the Left made up and assume everyone else follows. Nope. Ordinary folk's definition of racism is more in line with Joevitus and Kdogg.
For you youngin's: Having a woman of color play Momma Rose isn't anything new or revelatory. The legendary Leslie Uggams played the role 10 years ago...
