I am sure it will be visually amazing. Baz will make sure of it. Although I hope the visual aspects don't drown out the screenplay.

*cough* not like it's already like this on Broadway.

That is exactly what I am saying qolbinau. The show on broadway has so much stunning effects and spectacle that you kind of get lost in the illusion. I hope Winnie 's book is brought more clearer on screen.

And to those STILL attacking Chris Columbus' film-version of RENT. You ARE aware that Jonathan Larson's family was fully in control of the film AND of ALL the changes being done in it. If you're going to attack anyone... it should be them for allowing Jonathan Larson's work to be tarnished, etc.
Uhh, that still sounds awful. Pretty much you're saying he decided to attach his name to something he had no control over?
In his defense, ReNt was a better film than..mm...Home Alone 2!

For those complaining about Sam Mendes' Gypsy (this is the 2003 revival right? Not sure why people are saying 2005) - what was so 'different' about it? I only have the cast album..so I don't know.

Okay, how the hell did I miss that a Wicked movie went from a bunch of fangirls spreading rumors to actually being in the works?!

Oh I'm pleasantly pleased. Although I saw a press screening of Australia and found it a bore (Narrative has neve rbeen Baz's strength so planning a 3 hour epic was a poor choice) this is a much better fit than Spielberg (I had bad images of Hook 2 when I heard about that)
Brody your comment about defending Columbus' Rent film is inane--so we should blame Larsen's family? huh? they still didn't make the film even if they approved of elements.

I'd take the Tim Burton version over the Rob Marshall version:
Catherine Zeta-Jones as Elphaba
Renee Zellwegger as Glinda
Richard Gere as the Wizard
Hayden Christensen as Fiyero
Edited by Cuisinart
Cinematography and sound recording by Helen Keller

No, Roscoe, we all know a Tim Burton version would have Helena Bonham Carter as Elphaba and Johnny Depp as Fiyero.

Roscoe's casting was for the Rob Marshall version.

I loved Moulin Rouge, so I think Wicked will turn out pretty good. However, it will be so hard visualizing it as a movie.. the Act 1 finale in particular will be tricky to portray on film

I can't say that I agree with some of the ideas pointed out about the Emerald City. I think that the Emerald City and places like Munchkinland MUST stay very similar to their original portrayal in The Wizard of Oz in order to keep fans of the movie happy. No matter how far they are from each other, audiences will still expect a certain level of similarity between Oz in both movies.

Chris Columbus could have suggested anything he pretty damn well pleased but it was Jonathan Larson's family that had to ALLOW him to go thru with them. The Larson clan supported ALL of Chris Columbus' changes. "
That's bull****. The Larson family are not, and have never claimed to be artists. Chris Columbus does claim to be an artist. Even in working with them, his job was to create an interesting and engaging movie. He failed to do so.
Soooo off-topic.
Um, yay Baz Luhrmann. (And Roscoe, is it really wrong that my first thought when I read "Fiyero: Hayden Christensen" was "That would be hot". Wooden and awful, but hot.)

Roscoe writes: "Rob Marshall is the directorial equivalent of a blindfolded retarded baboon"
I'm sorry, but this phrasing had me laughing rather heartily... how harsh but hysterical.

"Holy Crap! Baz will actually give this movie some depth... I might actually go see the "film" now."
Depth? LOL. Luhrmann couldn't find depth in the Grand Canyon. His films are sloppy, melodramatic, overrated, and ridiculous. It was painful watching Moulin Rouge. The writing was awful, the songs did not progress the plot and the story was unoriginal. Remember this is the guy that destroyed Puccini's masterpiece La Boheme.
Get Peter Jackson to do musical and I might show up.

The thing is, wouldn't these fine film directors wait until they can do a good musical?

NYC4life- how did he ruin La Boheme? It got arguably the best reviews of its season. Did you see it? Did you see the DVD of the Australian production?

Actually Australia is getting mixed reviews to those who are claiming it's getting mostly horrible reviews. i think Luhrman would be a great choice. He is good at creating different worlds and wicked is for sure a different world.

IMDB doesn't really confirm much of anything, and saying he is interested in interviews does not count as studio confirmation of his attachment. Even if he is confirmed by the studio, it is still possible that the likely SAG strike will change all of that, depending on how long it lasts and what other projects he becomes involved in. Right now there are to many variables to say this is written in concrete.

I think Luhrman is a great choice, but I would have prefered Kevin Lima, who directed "Enchanted".
I hope that Menzel reprises her career-defining role on screen and Amy Adams plays Glinda (though I wouldn't complain were it Chenoweth). I would also love to see Dustin Hoffman play the Wizard, and Amanda Seyfried play Nessarose.
