I'm planning my first Broadway trip in March around this show. I've been revisiting the cast recordings and reading up on previous productions, particularly non-Broadway Roses. I found this newspaper article from 1962 about Betty Hutton ad-libbing in one of the early touring productions super hilarious. Thought I'd share.

I know it's been mentioned before that Gypsy has never been all that popular, but is this a sign that it is no longer meaningful even to regular theatergoers? That would really suck.
I don't think anyone except perhaps the most diehard fans or NYC visitors who like to lock in their schedules feel any need to buy tickets for this in advance.
Like a fair number of theater fans, I've seen a lot of Gypsy in my life. Unless there is tremendous buzz about this production and/or great discounts, I have no problem giving it a pass ... as much as I'm sure I would enjoy Audra in the role.
I was stoked to hear about the new revival and Audra casting, but the role requires someone who can real belt. Never crossed my mind that she's the first soprano to play it on Broadway...
It's been MONTHS of this. Now I admit, it's been a bad day and I probably should just go on ignoring this, but If I see one more pearl-clutching comment about how inappropriate a Soprano Rose is, I'm going to do three things:
1. Beat my head against the wall repeatedly.
2. After bandaging my battered head, remind you all that everyone here lost their minds for Imelda Staunton's Rose when she basically just screams the entire role. (I loved Imelda's Rose too but Merman she ain't.)
3. Direct you all to the recording of Audra's Rose's turn that's been hanging out on Youtube this entire time, taken at a Carnagie Hall concert two years ago, where she employs a mix throughout the song rather than a full belt. Does it sound like Merman or Lupone, no, but it's zero percent an inappropriate sound for the score. https://youtube.com/watch?v=btyImEX-VNI
End of the day - Rose is a King Lear, a Hamlet, a Hedda Gabler. It is a mountain of a role and a performer of this caliber, regardless of vocal approach, can succeed as long as it is grounded in the character.
...For god sakes we had a tenor Sweeney Todd on Broadway with raised keys and y'all lost your minds for him. Give it a rest, y'all.
Thank you for posting that Carnegie Hall audio. I’ll admit I’m definitely not a fan of Audra’s voice at all but listening to her “Rose’s Turn” was glorious. Especially that manic vibrato-heavy “for me!” repeats. Hearing such a unique and different vocal interpretation was/is so refreshing and now I’m excited to see what she brings to this revival vocally - acting wise, she’ll take things onto another level of brilliance. Every actress uniformly goes the Ethel Merman power belt route so hearing Audra’s soprano flavoring is exciting now.
Tana June, an Indiana rescue dog, will play Chowsie in this revival.
Dogs are having a moment this season on Broadway: here, LEFT ON TENTH, the adorable Pudgy marionette in BOOP... probably just getting their licks before CATS: THE JELLICLE BALL steals their spotlight! ;)

You're telling me noted soprano Audra McDonald is doing a role traditionally played by a belter? No, I didn't know that. You're telling me now for the first time.
Nicole is probably more famous, but she's not very famous in the US. Audra is already established here. But Sunset did already have the reviews and Oliviers from London, and Gypsy hasn't even gotten its NYC reviews yet, so they can only really advertise the people. I say, just give it time.

Is Audra less of a draw than Nicole across the street?"
Raves and positive word-of-mouth on Nicole plus the heavy TikTok content on her and the show has obviously helped the box office. Many are even returning to see the show again.
Though Audra works extensively on television she’s primarily known for her Broadway work. I have friends who are obsessed with THE GILDED AGE and have no idea who Audra McDonald is even though they are watching her throughout the series. Telling them she’s starring in a new Broadway revival of GYPSY won’t bring any excitement in them to get tickets to see her in the show. This revival so far has her fans and the Broadway community excited. Sadly, we’re the minority in any tickets sales.
