The first single is now available!
It sounds great - very bouncy and upbeat! I'm really excited for this one.
How often do shows record the cast album before they even begin rehearsals for the Broadway run? Understand it has had lots of development time and a run in Chicago but strikes me as odd that they would record before their run begins. Seems like they know the show they have and won’t be changing the music or lyrics during rehearsal or previews.
This is only a demo track which was recorded before the Chicago run. The official cast album version will sound different and fuller.

I hope it comes out soon just cd
I kind of love it, would make me see the show.
Re: shows recording their albums out of town, I know for sure SpongeBob and that Jimmy Buffet musical both recorded their cast albums in Chicago with their respective Chicago casts. The Jimmy Buffet show didn’t really have that many changes between Chicago and its New York run, but SpongeBob definitely should’ve waited. Multiple cast members were replaced and several chunks of lyrics were changed by the time it reached broadway. Not sure of any other examples off the top of my head, though.

Agree it's kind of unusual but I think they recorded it long after Chicago and the necessary changes were made. It's a great idea to create buzz in the show if the songs slap which they gotta!

I seem to remember THE PRODUCERS, DAYS OF WINE & ROSES, TEETH, and HONEYMOON IN VEGAS recorded after the initial out of town or off-Broadway run and before the subsequent/Bway run. Among others. Bette’s DOLLY recorded while in rehearsals but before previews began, and that album felt a little sluggish.
A cast album is not intended to be a documentary of every little moment that appeared on stage. Getting an album out early is better than waiting for minor changes to the lyrics or dance arrangements or even songs. If there are any numbers with MAJOR changes in previews, they can always re-record a couple of tunes. I seem to remember DAYS OF WINE & ROSES adjusted its orchestration for Broadway but that’s not heard on the album.
The benefit BOOP has is that the money & interest is evidently in place for an album. I’m sure David Foster has a lot to do with that. A brand new show like MAYBE HAPPY ENDING is not going to have much interest from labels/producers/independent funders until it’s actually on Broadway and generating buzz.
American Idiot recorded its cast album before coming to Broadway and released it on or around opening night. I don't think there were any huge changes between Berkeley and Broadway.
Correct me if I’m wrong but I think the only Broadway changes to American Idiot were the new finale (later recorded as a single/bonus track), and some lyric tweaks to Rock and Roll Girlfriend.
Possibly the “record skip” in Last Night on Earth, which is about the only major music moment not present on the recording.
The cast album for EVITA, with Patti LuPone, was recorded in Los Angeles towards the end of its pre-Broadway run.
I just found a 2018 post from morosco where he wrote that the single disc EVITA highlights recording had been remastered. I just listened to it on both Tidal and Apple Music and compared it to the full recording. The remastered highlights recording is much better sonically; richer fuller sound. I’m pleasantly surprised. I never even considered the highlights edition, but it’s just so much better!
