This seems possible, but my main question is: would Beetlejuice be eligible for Tonys if its a slightly different production? Seems like a possibility, but I dont know what the customary thing is.

The Barrymore is just so small. Especially compared to winter garden. I really can’t imagine this production in that theater. But , power to them. ... it would make more sense at the marquis.
"But “Beetlejuice” has since caught on, its weekly grosses climbing to over $1 million. So the Shuberts have found it another home: the Ethel Barrymore, soon to be vacant after the collapse of “The Inheritance.”
It's a definite possibility. This is also being discussed a little bit on the Sophia Caruso departs Beetlejuice board.
Oh no, I think this could transfer to the Barrymore. I was responding no to the Tony eligibility part

Oh for sure. I totally agree. I just don’t think it fits the feel of that show , having it in such a small theater. But , money talks.

Also years before that, the original production of 42nd Street transferred from the Winter Garden to the Majestic....
I’m guessing the BEETLEJUICE transfer will happen, and it will continue to thrive...."
Wow! So apparently , the winter garden is cursed ! Haha
42nd Street had to leave the Winter Garden to make room for CATS, and then had to leave the Majestic (moved to St. James across the street) to make room for PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. It was the invasion of the British in the 80s! 🤓
In terms of availability, there isn't much to pick from. Barrymore seats 1,039, so it's not too small, just smaller than the Winter Garden. If the producers think it can continue to make money there, the move will happen.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
I mean, if a tour is planned for fall 2021 and they can get the set ready earlier, this gives them another year towards recouping investments. I think, at this rate, the show could do well for another year, so it could be smart to run until it goes on tour.
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST used the set for the First Nations tour when it moved from the Palace to the Lunt, so a redesign with the move does have additional precedent!

Can you just imagine if stan twitter existed back then? If they went crazy for music man kicking beetlejuice out, they would’ve torched the place for Rocky kicking mamma Mia out. Oh a time to be alive.

Being here at the time... literally nobody cared. That it was actually moving somewhere else instead of just closing was the shocking part. Beetlejuice is a really unique case with its fandom. Mamma Mia was kept afloat by middle age wine moms and international tourists.
As for a tinier Beetlejuice? Well I'm happy that I'm seeing it next month instead...

Cursed?? LOL The Winter Garden has housed six shows since 1982. And this revival of The Music Man is about to make bank. I would hardly call that cursed.

I was kind of making a joke ....
it’s just interesting how many shows at the winter garden have moved theaters
Moving theaters was pretty common back in the day. Chicago moved, what, 3 times?
I think the Barrymore makes total sense. And I think it will still keep its same vibe. I've never though the show felt BIG the way, say, Wicked does. It's basically just the house set that's big. I think the comedy and stuff will probably play better in a smaller theater too. I'm excited to see what changes they make.
I’d have to imagine the Barrymore stage is barely 2/3 that of the Winter Garden, and the downscaling would have to be pretty aggressive. I guess if they have a tour set at the ready, but a show like where the set is practically a co-starring lead, they’re not gonna be able to get away with a pierce of trash like that teeny Mamma Mia set.

Great way to put it. The set really is a co-starring lead.
It probably would have been wise to put the show in a smaller theatre like the Barrymore in the first place, but that's all hindsight. I'll be curious to see what changes they make and how small that house actually gets.
The summer months are so lucrative, it would be a mistake to have this entire move actually happen but still miss out on some weeks of performances. What are the chances they tech while still at the Winter Garden and are able to start performances at the Barrymore immediately that next week? I think Mamma Mia! took a 1 week hiatus, but that was not during the summer (I think.)
VotePeron, even if they miss a few weeks of performances to do the move, tourist money doesn't really ramp up til late June/July. Or, perhaps they vacate the Winter Garden earlier.
We also have to remember that with the move probably comes a reduction in the cast size, orchestra, and other stage personnel, in addition to the physical production changes and modifications to the direction/choreo. And then there's casting, both principal and in the reduced ensemble cast. Doubt the original principals would all make the leap to the new venue, especially if a pay cut (even a moderate one) is involved.
