With the Tonys over and the first show of 2025-26 opening this week, I wanted to start up a new thread similar to last year's that I did. Do we know if Mamma Mia is trying to run as long as possible or is it actually a limited engagement?
there's only 29 shows running right now. Mamma Mia! starts August 2. seems like there's a bunch of theaters that may end up empty for a long stretch.

The Barrymore, Broadhurst, Jones, Longacre, and Majestic are currently dark for the fall. I would say All Out will take one of these, but they haven't specified if they are opening in the fall or spring. Allegedly Two Strangers has the Jones, but they are hoping for another theater to open up. Cats may have the Broadhurst, but they are opening in spring, so it would be able to host a limited run (unless they need time to reconfigure the space).
For what it’s worth — CATS wants a theatre bigger than the Broadhurst based on what I’ve been told (by a more reputable source than an usher at Boop). I don’t know which landlord they’re working with, but perhaps the Majestic is in play there.

Oh how I wish we had Cats and/or Evita opening this fall. I'm considering a trip right before Christmas and it's not looking like there's that much I want to see.

I saw it in 2023. The choreography is worth the price of admission, but I couldn't locate the plot anywhere, so I doubt it's coming here anytime soon.

That set looks absolutely spectacular.

Is Millions, the Adam Guettel musical aiming for Broadway? Other possibilities are Wanted, Midnight of Good and Evil, Preachers wife, two strangers, curious case of Benjamin button.

The Haimes is undergoing major renovations starting this summer/fall which is anticipated to take 8 months.

I hope Two Strangers settles for one of the larger off Broadway house.
Also hoping we get the Jamie Lloyd Much Ado. With all the hoopla surrounding Evita, talk on the Much Ado has gone quiet.

Who in the right mind thinks much ado has a place on broadway. Those leads aren’t big names. Are producers having a hard time raising money for shows? It seems like we would normally have much more announced by this point, especially given how many theaters are available.

Broadway Flash you seriously think that Tom Hiddleston isn't a "big name"? Did you see the grosses (and the stage door) for BETRAYAL? And Hayley Atwell is no slouch either.

Just like Gypsy would be New Orleans set.
How do you block again ?

Don't know any specifics about MUCH ADO, but Hiddleston's BETRAYAL did okay and that came in with extremely quick advance notice (one could say it arrived in a Broadway flash). Since 2019, Hiddsleston has also had the Loki show, and the novelty of Hiddleston plus Atwell plus Lloyd is better than just one of those individuals.
Or to put it another way: if Jamie Lloyd wants it on Broadway, it will come to Broadway.

He should do it at the shed just like he did the effect there for a few weeks. Hiddleston is not gonna set the box office ablaze like Clooney or Denzel. And who gives a $hit about much ado.
CATS wants a bigger theatre?!

Appreciate the analysis. Thoughts where I either disagree or have questions / observations.
1. I think the Golden will be available. It’s grosses have been going down and it must be pretty close to breakeven at this point.
2. I am betting Oh! Mary! Will extend as long as they can find good people to take over. Breakeven must be pretty low, and I would think Cole would love to have a long run play (rarer and rarer these days) to his credit.
3. I hope the Winter Garden is available if all they are showing is something on a road stop.
4. I’ll bet that the Hirschfeld, Broadway, Horne, Lyric, Marquis, Shubert and probably the Sondheim and Kerr will be available and the Belasco will definitely not be. CITS depends on how long JG wants to stay. I went to purchase tickets for friends in November and was amazed at how well it is sold already.
5. I wonder whether Chicago may be getting near to its end. Grosses have been bad for quite awhile and unless they do some very effective stunt casting soon, they may be out of steam. Of course, that theatre is so awful that the Shubert org might be incented to reduce their charges even more, just to keep it occupied.
6. Having seen Versailles and found it distasteful — the lead character is a selfish, shallow jerk, only redeemed by the fact that she is played by KC — I will be very surprised if they can turn it around. If it is as distasteful as it was in Boston, IMO WOM will be awful. The open question is how many tickets will be sold in advance because of Chenoweth and Schwartz. That said, even with bad reviews, and low full price ticket sales after reviews come out, it will probably run long enough to preclude another show opening during the 25/26 season.

I could see Much Ado with Tom Hiddlestone coming over.
Also Giant with John Lithgow.
Maybe The Years.
And of course Evita.

The reconfiguration of the show for Broadway is the major hinderance that’s preventing the other pieces from falling into place, per a producer friend of mine who is currently being courted by the production. It sounds like the two spaces they are trying to decide between are CITS and the August Wilson (since it’s already been partially reconfigured)
