I'm very curious (and I might add a little antsy) to see what shows survive. I'd imagine they'd start off with a "starter kit" of shows that could serve as an introduction to Broadway theatre, out of the currently-running shows. Then new shows would start to open little by little starting late next year.

Fair enough if only the mainstays stick around: Phantom, Wicked, Mormon, Hamilton, Chicago, and the Disney trifecta. Gotta start somewhere.

We obviously don't know what's going to happen in the future in terms of scientific breakthroughs, second waves, etc., but I wouldn't be surprised if there's no theater at all throughout not only 2020, but also 2021. There are many reports out there that suggest social distancing and intermittent shutdowns could be needed through 2022 or later, depending on the course of the virus. The 12-18 month window in developing a vaccine has been widely touted, but the record fastest a vaccine has previously been developed is four years, for the mumps vaccine. Broadway knows that it needs to be careful and not open until they're absolutely positive that they can stay open, and operate in a way that's safe and profitable. Unfortunately, given the science and the history we have to draw from, that doesn't look like it will be anytime soon.

Of course, like many things with this virus, there is plenty that we just don't know. And there's obviously plenty of money and brainpower being thrown at developing vaccines and treatments. But it's almost pointless to try and speculate when Broadway will be reopening, because we lack so much knowledge about so many variables in that decision.

The shows you mention seem likely to make it back. I'd also guess Evan Hansen and Come From Away will likely return. Probably Moulin Rouge. I'd imagine Plaza Suite will resurface as Broderick and Parker seemed very excited to be doing it and being New Yorkers, could very likely want to be a part of the Broadway reopening when it happens. Six and Company have a good shot I think.

Heartbreaking but not unexpected. I hope that shows that had been holding off on refunds will just process them now.

I feel you! I just graduated with a BFA in Scenic Design into an industry that’s completely shut down. Yay for moving back in with my parents!

Im sure they’ll open the house an extra half hour early to allow for the extra security measures and also, this isn’t forever. Thank you for your realistic but not gloom and doom post. Reading through some others on this board makes me want to curl up in a ball and never leave my house. I don't mind realistic talk or even negativity. What I do mind is people posting this way and getting joy from it.

Better start electing people who believe in science if we wanna get things under control, and avoid things like this in the future.

So, if they really are gonna take the temperature of every single person who enters a theatre, what exactly does that mean? Does that mean that anyone who has a so-called “fever” will just be turned away after spending possibly multiple hundreds of dollars and waiting for months or to be there? I mean I know there’s a lot of people who just generally run a higher than average normal temperature. And it’s also quite likely that someone could have a slight fever but not have Covid-19. It’s not like they can do Covid tests at the theatre, but just going based on temperature seems a little unfair...

Also, to be honest, I really wish that people would stop saying that this is probably gonna last til next year or even longer. It’s true that really nobody knows at this point but let people at least try to have a somewhat positive outlook, okay? Shows might be reopen in September, they might not be. But to say things like “give up, Broadway isn’t gonna be back til 2021 or later” is not a good thing to say because WE DONT KNOW. Things could change drastically in the next few months. Wait until at least fall of this year to say anything about shows not returning til next year. (I am saying this not just from my own standpoint as someone who has had almost every source of happiness taken away from them, but also for all the performers and everyone else who works in the theatre industry because all of us want to get back to what we love - and in the case of many people - our jobs - as soon as possible). There are people out there (myself included) who are struggling every single day (whether that be emotionally, financially, or something else) because the things that bring them happiness have all been taken away. People can’t go to live performances. People can’t go to restaurants. People can’t go to work or school. People can’t hang out with their friends. I’m not saying I disagree with stuff being cancelled/postponed or the social distancing cause I know in the long run it will make this all end sooner. But when Broadway being closed longer than originally said (or anything else for that matter) and then people just saying “It’s gonna be even longer than that” is not in anyway helping. Just let people try and have some positive things in their life instead of always expecting the worst.

Checking temps seems pointless due to asymptomatic spread. That alone would definitely not make me feel more comfortable going to see a show.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with people being told to manage their expectations and prepare for a longer shutdown. The announcement itself does this and even specifies that this is really for the purposes of having refunds occur.

You’re right. There is an extremely slim chance that a drastic development may occur in the next four months. But you’re presumably an adult and should be able to recognize that is magical thinking at best.

I really feel though my worst fear is about to be realized. Unless there is some major insurance payouts down there for something like this. I do fear that on half of the theatres will be actually able to comeback. And on top of the fear some seniors (the largest demographic) to attend the ticket prices at the current rates will make it out of the financial budget for at least the 25% who are currently unemployed.

In terms of travel destinations there was an article a couple weeks ago talking about how travel will be popular for those “no people” locations. But places like New York. London. Beijing, Tokyo etc. Will take a drastic hit
