You should start a thread called Chicago is Closing. For fun.
Hello, holiday season!
Happy trails to Wayne Brady, Ashley Loren, Ryan McCartan, Christopher Jackson, and Aaron Bartz.
Trisha Paytas did BEETLEJUICE some good, and so did Darren Criss in his return to MAYBE HAPPY ENDING.
Holy mother of God CHESS!

Are these updated, or are they still last week's? The link to the grosses page says 11/9 but the grosses page itself still says 11/2.
EDIT: Never mind. Since I posted this comment the date has been corrected.
It appears we are entering the season of finding out who the haves and have-nots truly are.
CHESS crossed the $2 Million mark and, with last night’s extended segments on The Tonight Show, I think the engine is off and running with enough gas to get past the holidays, regardless of reviews).
HAMILTON continues to eat everyone’s lunch - they’ve definitely built up a nice nest egg to chug on. I also hope Leslie is getting a nice salary and/or points on the back end because he is the only reason that they are getting the highest grosses they’ve ever seen right now - which also benefits most of the OBC that shares 1% of any profits.
LIBERATION is a sad tale. I’m seeing some performances they are opening the balcony, but there is zero demand for this show and so why add more supply? And the Rob Lake Magic show seems to be floundering. I’m sure it will pick up during the holidays when there are thee show days on the weekends, but the bad word of mouth has seemed to cause this to flop out of the game.
Over the next few weeks, we have new star casting coming o to & JULIET, CHICAGO, HELL’S KITCHEN, HADESTOWN, and MOULIN ROUGE, so it will be interesting to see any impact that has on sales as the holidays gear up
From the reviews and comments I've read here, I can't make sense of Liberation's half filled houses. Is it a distaste for political POV shows? Any ideas?
It's such a good play. It's thoughtful, funny, and really brilliant. I'm not sure why it's not connecting to people (most of the other shows this Fall are starry or a bit more exciting possibly), but it absolutely could be people wanting an escape from the current American Dumpster Fire or thinking it's too similar to Suffs, which I overheard two women discussing after the show.
The Shubert Organization appears to be reporting the full house attendance figure of 1061 seats, rather than the 760 seats that have actually been on sale for the present weeks, with the balcony off sale. So for last week's figures, it should be 4615 theatergoers filling 6088 possible seats for an actual capacity figure of around 76%.

I never understand why they'd exclude the balcony seats even if it's common practice...does the rent reduce? Otherwise they are still indeed just unsold seats that I'm sure they would sell if they could.

No stars. Any play that tries to make it without Hollywood names is facing a major uphill battle. Which is why the success of Stereophonic and Oh Mary are so remarkable.

The ad creative is also really awful, which doesn't help. It's such a shame - it's a very special show that deserves to find an audience.

I liked it when I saw it off-Broadway, despite not being sold on the time travel/ memory play around imagined memories format. But this is the only show I can think of that has people put their phones in a Yondr pouch, and doesn't have celebrities in the cast (and you have to do it because of the nude scene).
With no stars and a concept that's hard to describe, I always thought this would be a tough sell on Broadway.
Liberation’s marketing makes it look like a low-budget sex farce and they haven’t done much in the way of social media presence, either (2.8k followers on IG is… not good for a Broadway show). It was always a tough sell on Broadway but they needed better than whatever they got.
Oh Mary’s sustained success is really incredible. It’s managed to maintain its appeal with ticketbuyers while also becoming a show that big names want to jump into, and their low overhead means that if and when grosses dip, they’ll be able to ride it out.

I'm sure it's optics reasons both for weekly grosses and the eye test of less empty seats at other levels.

Kate Baldwin & Alex Newell are gonna pack the Ambassador!!! (sarcasm).
I saw Liberation this weekend, and was mesmerized, entertained, moved to tears multiple times. I haven't seen a play with its cumulative power in many seasons. But the show is closer to, say, The Heidi Chronicles than Suffs, - epic but personal and fictional, intricately woven storytelling, not a polemic - and I wish they'd market it to highlight how theatrical the staging is. It's not a handful of characters perched on the edges of folding chairs for 2.5 hours. Susannah Flood, in the central role, is giving one of the best performances of this season or any other. Had they convinced, say, Jennifer Anniston to play this role (and I can see it), it would be a must-see hot ticket. Therein lies the problem.

tons of comps. Only way he's hitting 80% capacity.

And that is too much to pay for this drek.

Honestly this made me want to get a ticket. To me it came off as burn your bra women’s right play which is totally fine but I don’t need to be preached at for something I already support? So maybe that’s how other people are perceiving it.
