The grosses for Smash were very good given that one of the eight performances was  opening night where a large percentage of tickets are comped.

Do you realize how much money Gypsy is likely to make during the holiday season? It will not be a Labor Day closing.
"

Which holiday season are you talking about? Regardless, why would you think that GYPSY is a "holiday show"?  It's never been (and never will be) a tourist show -- it's a show for New Yorkers, some bridge + tunnel, and the relatively small pockets of visiting show queens.

Agreed, Gypsy is not a big tourist show. The show itself as a property and Audra as an actresss are big draws for theater lovers, not the general population

Summer will be interesting this year. Australian just added America to a reconsider list for travel.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

I've been wondering how long it would take before we did that.  I've got one friend who has already cancelled their trip to to the US and my brother is due to travel to the US later this year and he and his wife were due to catch a couple of shows while they were there but not sure if they are now reconsidering although the main reason they were going was to visit a family member of my sis in law's.

I’m impressed that 40 out of 41 Broadway houses are in use.  When’s the last time that happened I wonder?

With cancelled performances, mixed reviews and NO substantial box office bump to support its near $850,000 weekly nut, Boop! will hang on for Tony noms and then most likely post a closing notice. Now, spare the troll comments and "they are back slurs", could not care less. This show was a long shot to begin with. yes, it is good, and the star is really good, but dated material, zero marketing power and lack of real word of mouth. Evidence is in clearly in tracking the next 3 weeks, half empty houses dictate this Boop! has no Bop!

I know REDWOOD is generally disliked (except by Jesse G) but those numbers are awful and I would have thought Idina would be a bigger draw, especially post-Wicked.

Can it even survive through the end of its current block of tickets (August)?

I think the die-hard theater fans sometimes overestimate Idina Menzel's drawing power with more general theater goers. Plus her association with Wicked was from how many years ago? (her cameo in the movie aside)

If Menzel can’t draw a crowd to the Nederlander how do producers expect Chenoweth to be able to draw a crowd to the St. James?

It’ll probably run through the spring road conference, if I had to guess.

I too expected Idina to draw in more business on name alone. But this is a very crowded season in terms of big names. Jake and Denzel, Nicole Scherzinger, Audra, Odenkirk/Culkin/Burr, Sarah Snook, George Clooney, Nick Jonas. Perhaps less A-List, but still impactful figures like Jinkx Monsoon and Ramin, Bernadette and Lea, Jonathan Groff, Sadie Sink, Orville Peck.

This is WAY more star power t contend with than when Idina was last here in If/Then. Most of the above stars are also in shows with recognizable IP. If there was a thinner field of celebs and/or productions, maybe Idina would be pulling in higher numbers. But in this field, she doesnt really have a shot at saving an original story with poor reviews.

I would not have expected Audra in Gypsy to be drawing substantially more people than Idina in Redwood.

They’re both relatively niche in the larger pop culture landscape. (Of course, Gypsy’s running costs are a lot higher and they’re dangerously close to bleeding money)

Unfortunately, I think Chenoweth will be in the same boat as Menzel. Beloved stage star with a finite appeal to tourists, in a problematic vehicle.

I wonder if this is a case of the production/property trumping the performer. Seems possible that almost any good name in Gypsy would draw better than Idina in Redwood given the familiarity of the former and the topic matter of the latter.

I think Chenoweth will be more of an attraction than Menzel.  She seems to be ubiquitous on TV, whereas Menzel is not.

Flip side...what would that show be doing were she not in it.  She is probably selling most of the tickets that are being sold.

GYPSY is not a money property. It has an insular fanbase.

There are virtually no musical revivals that would make $1 million a week for 5 months on the strength of the title alone.

Audra and the reviews are generating sales.

The word of mouth could also be stronger for Gypsy too. I haven’t seen redwood so I hate to make claims I can’t really support but my hunch is that Gypsy is the better show.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

Oh. The person who attended opening night but missed the show because they screwed up on their whole fabricated story is back. Nice to see you are back attacking Boop. At this point I highly doubt you have even seen the show.

You have lied about this show and those involved from the get go.

No doubt they've been hounding every booker and producer for months.

Morning (and late-night) appearances do not drive the needle these days in the way that they did years ago. Most shows would kill for the TV coverage that HEART OF ROCK & ROLL had last year. It did not mean a thing.

I think the Redwood issue is really just word of mouth on the show itself. I’ve seen anything Idina has done in New York post-Wicked and immediately bought a ticket for Redwood, but I find it hard to recommend to anyone who isn’t a die hard fan. She’s incredible in it and the visuals are stunning, but the score is just *so* bad.

Yup, completely agree.   I was on here that night and with 100% certainty this person made a fool of themselves by claiming to be getting ready to go to opening an hour after the show started.    They are a fool who clearly has some unnatural obsession with this show.  Maybe they are mad they weren't cast in it?  Who knows.  The funny thing is, I didn't love the show and we probably have similar viewpoints about it.  But someone who felt the need for WEEKS to obsessively post and reply to every comment about this show (likely trolling the board for hours on end) has some psychological issues.
