More of the same, besides new box office records from CHICAGO and OH, MARY! as was already reported.

Happy trails to Whitney Leavitt, Mark Ballas, Michael James Scott, and Megan Thee Stallion.

Fantastic grosses for Chicago!

"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)

It feels weird living in a world where "Death Becomes Her" made about a third of what CHICAGO grossed in a week.

That ain't great...

Chicago knows when to switch it up unlike Death Becomes Her, apparently.

Not that I’d be worried about Wicked, but its grosses have certainly dropped off since the 2nd film came out. I’m guessing the lack of the free marketing from the movie is part of it. The show just announced $45 rush tickets will be available for the month of May.

Death Becomes Her has to be on life support now. I wish Two Strangers would get a boost with all of their Tony nominations.

Beaches averaged 772 people per performance. If their matinees are getting ~1,000, that would mean their evening shows are getting ~500 people.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

DBH has gotten to the point where they are papering to fill the house. As I’ve said every week, they’ve gotten into a mess of their own making and now are about to get a boot to the ass with all the hot and shiny new shows with Tony noms (and possible awards). It barely outgrossed BEACHES, which is sad.

SCHMIGADOON and TWO STRANGERS are liable to see a nice bump in the coming weeks.

BEACHES…I give them two weeks because they’ll probably want to capitalize on Mother’s Day audiences, but I expect an announcement by end of business today.

I’ve heard the nederlanders have already enacted the stop clause on DBH

Sadly, it needs to happen. Announce an August closing and let their die-hard fans see the show a few more times. Shame on the producers for not trying to get some fresh faces for the leads.

Pretty much every show right now has the right to be worried, including the long-runners. People just aren't seeing anything for the shows themselves anymore.

Major hordes of the theatergoing audience 1) is dying out / died out during COVID, 2) have adopted new, permanent routines staying at home as it is considered "safer" and less costly than travelling to NY (especially domestic folk from the East Coast), and 3) simply plan to avoid the US at all costs, no matter who is in charge.

It's a rough world right now and it will be tough economically for a LONG time. In my experience, it's becoming easier and easier to predict which shows (if any) sell each season, a telling sign of this broken theatre industry.

I'd imagine it's extremely difficult to cast the two leads in Death Becomes Her.

I'm surprised to see DBH with such a big drop in grosses this week, even considering its very steady decline that started right after the holidays. Unfortunate, particularly for a show that had been in a strong place for a while.

I have to imagine the poor execution and reception of Wicked: For Good harmed the show’s grosses. We saw a massive bump for the well-received first part, but the letdown of the second part seems to have let the cat out of the bag a bit that the second act of Wicked is just not very good. It’s surprisingly handled better on stage, but even as someone who has seen the show too many times to count, I could see the reaction of “Oh, that’s how it ends?” keeping a good chunk of audience from cross-pollinating.

  • I was really surprised that JIT's grosses and capacity dropped by 10% and 5% respectively.  I would have expected JJ to be a bigger attraction than MM at this time.  Three possible explanations: (1) JJ is not in for just 3 weeks, so less urgency for fans; (2) overexposure, between return visit to GG and Floyd Collins; (3) the show has peaked and the producers will run it until it starts losing money (something the DBH producers don't seem to get).
  • Maya Rudolph's gross tells me that Oh! Mary! can run indefinitely, as long as they can come up with real names who are willing to step into the show for pretty short time commitments.
  • Scary that none of this season's musicals are doing well other than Ragtime, and Ragtime's average ticket price is still only $133.  People are assuming that Tony nominations will help...I am not so sure, as the musical nominations are not exactly thrilling.
  • The only new musical that I think may break through is The Lost Boys, assuming that it can become a hot ticket with younger audiences.  It clearly has a long way to go.
  • DBH has really died quickly.  The producers really need to decide whether they want to continue to lose money week after week.  Clearly, summer audiences want to see the Broadway museum pieces and whatever is still open that has stars.
  • I have already scheduled my fall trip for late October.  Normally, I would see a combo of new things and things I missed in the Spring.  I doubt there will be anything from the spring openings that are still open (that I am not seeing in 3 weeks).  I have not read much about fall openings.  I am guessing that this may be the visit in which I revisit Chicago and Wicked, neither of which I have seen in 10 years, and hope that the non-profits have some good options.  Looking at this list demonstrates that long-runs and star attractions are LARGELY the only things doing well.
  • Given Wicked's ridiculously low average ticket price, why are they not at TKTS??????

Looking at the grosses this week my initial thoughts are:

Beaches - you needed to close yesterday

&Juliet - pack it in by the end of summer unless you have a stunt casting lined up.

Chess - September is your closing date

Death Becomes Her - Big Replacements announcements this week or close out July

Maybe Happy Ending - Close out September Long weekend

Six - You've been swell but, close out by September

Stranger Things - Has Run its course, close up by September or if Netflix money is coming in January

Great Gatsby - Close up by fall

... sad thing is we don't really have a lot waiting in the wings for theatres to come into the city.

Curious to see what will happen ones like Two Strangers and Titanique who have low operating costs and have been bumping along, with these nominations.

DBH in a limbo contest with Beaches is not what I anticipated, but here we are.

I dont think a DBH cast change would make all the much difference, aside big names who then probably couldn't sing it.  I just dont think enough people are interested in it as an IP, its more of a cult following type movie than a beloved mainstream classic. And word of mouth hasnt made it a 'must see' to casual theatregoers. A new cast of broadway names may attract some theatre fans back, but would make no difference to the general public.

It had its viral 'that was rude' moment, but viral doesnt mean people are willing to pay $100s to see whole show.

Bingo, I find the Chicago comparison unfair. Not only are the roles more difficult to cast, but I’d imagine just the cost of putting in a replacement is much higher. The DBH costumes are much more intricate than the single piece a Velma or Roxie has to wear.

Taking a wild guess that they're already talking to Whitney and Mark for a return engagement to Chicago this fall. Those numbers are incredible.

I'm wondering too. I've finally saw the show with Jeremy Jordan and thought he's sensational in it. The audience ate out of the palm of his hand. It has to be the overexposure. Jeremy even made joke at the beginning about being in 3 Broadway musicals in the past 2 years.

I don't know if lightning can keep striking at the Ambassador, but Ciara Miller from Summer House could be in the conversation. She also was announced for Dancing With The Stars this fall. Same trajectory as Ariana Madix and Whitney Leavitt.

There's no comparison whatsoever. One is a well-oiled machine that has been on Broadway for decades that costs very little to run. They throw a Housewife in and squeeze some more life out of it. Clearly the girl they most recently put in the show did some great business for them.

Death Becomes Her requires a vocal and physical prowess few performers possess, especially ones willing to replace and who also have some kind of selling power at the box office.
