Seems to me that all of the long-running shows (and shows that have recouped) would be able to withstand this, right? A statement like "PHANTOM... may well close down for good" reads like cheap click-bait."
It's a Cameron Mackintosh production. He can keep the show running in an empty house for years. It's up to whether he wants to or not.

I'm sure they need some time to figure this out, but I wouldn't be surprised if the major nonprofits follow suit, even though their houses are generally in the 200-person range. Perhaps they will play to half-capacity crowds....
Selfishly, I don't want to miss Unknown Soldier or Assassins, but we'll have to see how this thing goes.
I don't care if you like Michael Riedel or not, but everything in his article makes sense. To say that he's a hack who can't be trusted is just burying your head in the sand as to how financially devastating this situation is, never mind the logistics.

But everything in the article is also conjecture and hearsay.
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."

Ok...but he has literally posted misinformation before. Multiple times. Which is why I said to take his "news" with more than a grain of salt.
Kad said: "I wouldn't be surprised if smaller shows cancel, as well. The loss of Broadway will almost certainly further dampen audience turnout across the board.
And don't forget, the governor's mandate also requires slashing the capacity of smaller events in half."
Kad, I've been reading this entire thread since it started and some of the comments that were posted make my head spin. Thank you for being a voice of reason throughout these many posts and making a solid case for what is in the best interest of the greater community. Yes, the closing of theaters is sad for the arts and many people will be adversely affected, but at this time, the role of theater is to preserve life, not enhance it. Thanks for being a hero on this board.
I have tickets to the Lungs show with Claire Foy and Matt Smith at BAM. Has anyone heard anything about this being cancelled or rescheduled? I did reach out to BAM but no response yet.
You can remove the question mark from the title of this thread. Shut down for 4-6 weeks?!? Most shows will be forced to close permanently. What a mess!

I’ve been thinking of Lungs too. I’m terrified of shows simply getting totally canceled. I have a nagging fear that some shows that close on Broadway today just simply won’t reopen.

Once again, all I said was that it makes sense. Rumors and conjecture that make sense have a better chance of being true that those that don't. In any case, my post was directed at another poster who shall remain nameless, someone who I refuse to quote anymore because I can't stand them and their nastiness.

Reidel IS a hack who cannot be trusted. Sometimes he writes things that make sense, even though they are speculation or hearsay. These are all true things, and not mutually exclusive.

I do, as well. I had tickets to a show tonight too. Tried calling Telecharge, but the lines are so busy that they asked to call back at a later date. I would try to give it until tomorrow at least - I am sure all of the theater owners and ticketing companies are scrambling to figure out exactly how to handle this unprecedented situation.

"Most shows" is very alarmist unless you've got data to back it up. Everything is uncertain and conditions are likely to be in flux for some time. Stating doomsday outcomes as if they are preordained facts is unhelpful.
If you purchased tickets from Telecharge for a Broadway or New World Stages performance between March 12, 2020 and April 12, 2020, your tickets will be automatically refunded back to your credit card. Please be patient as we process refunds; it may take some time for the refund to appear on your credit card statement. There is no need to contact Telecharge about your tickets.
If you bought tickets at a Broadway or New World Stages box office with a credit card, your tickets will be automatically refunded back to your card. If you bought tickets at a box office with cash, please visit the box office for a refund. Box offices will remain open with regular hours during this period.

Broadway in Boston sent out a notice this morning that performances would continue but wouldn't be surprised if they updated within the next few days."
Thanks!!

Just had an email from the Boch Center that all performances through March 30th are cancelled, which would mean the first week of The Band’s Visit.

LOL! One of the worst things that can happen during an epidemic is for a government to politicize it. Trump’s speech last night, and his administration‘s response to coronavirus/Covid 19 in general, has been all about his re-election. He framed the entire issue as being about threats from foreigners and punishing China and western liberal democracies. He said practically nothing about having eliminated his own White House public health office, questions about CDC testing criteria that might under-report disease incidence and prevalence but falsely inflate lethality, unavailability of testing in the U.S., lack of federal guidance regarding local implementation of social distancing, etc. etc
Ebola was controlled in the Gambia when the Pentagon deployed medical infrastructure that dealt honestly and truthfully, and obtained the local population’s trust in institutions. That encouraged infected folks to come out of hiding, where they were producing disease reservoirs, and obtain appropriate help and quarantine.
Truthful, altruistic leadership and trust in institutions of government and healthcare stopped Ebola in west Africa. I hope we can get leaders willing to stop politicizing the issue as being about Trump’s wall, and start being about public health science. That is what saves lives
