Digging through some old threads on this site, it appears Doubt started(?) as a Roundabout reading: https://forum.broadwayworld.com/readmessage.php?thread=845191#. In a way, this production is something of a homecoming. (Of note: Glenn Close apparently played Sister Aloysius in said reading; she would also be fabulous in a fully-staged production).



I was fortunate to see the original production Off-Broadway back in December of '04; being 11 at the time it stands as one of those great productions that, admittedly, I didn't fully get at the time (but enjoyed nonetheless). I also remember loving Shanley's Defiance a few years later; it was a kind of spiritual successor to Doubt and was supposed to be part of a trilogy. In any case, I look forward to revisiting this play through a new lens.

I hope the "Did he do it?" dilemmas don't come back.

Cherry Jones was so perfect in the lead, I have a hard time seeing anyone surpass her in that role. I also expected a younger Father Flynn, but interested in seeing what Schieber can do. My friend and I also had completely different opinions of "did he or didn't he?" after seeing the show. Powerful! Was not a fan of the film version, hoping this new production has all the subtleties of the original...

I am very curious about how this will play today. We know so much more about the scale and scope of the abuse by the Catholic Church now, and the tension between conservative and liberal Catholic ideologies has only grown more acute during Pope Francis’ tenure.


Shanley certainly expertly laid a lot of tripwires in this script to mess with the audience’s biases.

Count me in for JOAQUINA KALUKANGO - I feel like she’s the perfect caliber of actress the role calls for.

I see it this way - if the dilemmas don't come back, then the production would have failed. Interpreting the ending in your own way, and having the interpretations be evenly split across the audience, is the whole point of Doubt."

No, what I meant was for those claiming to know from the playwright or from their own research what the answer is.

There is no definite answer, we will never know.

I have a feeling that I will really love this revival.

Any further news on this? Doubt is my favourite play of all time, and I never got to see it on broadway so I'm hyped. It's short and incredibly well structured, and balances perfectly on that knife's edge of insecurity. I'm dying to know the casting for sister james

The Roundabout website says the show will run from February 2- April 14.

Also worth noting that Home will play the American Airlines from May 17- July 28, so it won't be part of the current Broadway season.

Not a very long run at all.

Quincy Tyler Bernstine and Zoe Kazan have joined the cast as Mrs. Muller and Sister James, respectively.

Always happy to see Quincy Tyler Bernstine's name attached to a project. Extremely underrated actor!
