"As to his casting, I'm not sure why everyone seems to think they know better than JCM and the creative team, who chose him and are investing time and energy into transforming him into Hedwig"
I am sure. They want the show to keep running and they want to make money. There's a demographic of Criss fans out there, I'm sure. From watching him on tv.

It is not a matter of knowing better. At this point I am sure it is about money.. and why shouldn't it be? He will bring $$$$$ in.

Curious if he'll have the pull to bring that much $$$$ in a relatively longer run.

What a load of crap to think that they only bring in DC to make money. Sure, he has fans. But he is not any big star. If they want just to make $$, there any many more bigger stars than DC.
What an insult. DC has the raw talents obviously they know that will work. He has great stage presence and energy which is perfect for the role.
I saw him on H2$. Vocally, he still needed improvement. However I was very impressed on his talent and stage presence. He only had 1-2 weeks to prepare with no previews.
DC's vocal has improved quite a lot in the last couple of years. I am sure he can handle it as I have seen him live in concert. As previous post said, nobody knows better than JCM. If you think you do, like some of you think so, you are a joke. Well haters gonna hate.

Oh stop it people. Let the poor guy put one foot onstage before you tar and feather him. Lord.
And regardless of his screaming fans, Darren was more than servicable in HOW TO SUCCEED. He will be fine.

JCM also really wanted Ally Sheedy. He wrote a big post on the old Hedwig site urging people to give her a chance.
That all being said,
He looks like a fratboy going to a halloween party.
It's tragic because after Michael C Hall I made a promise to see every replacement Hedwig after him. And then this happened.
The show has gone from amazing star casting to terrible stunt casting. He's in no way right for this, he has zero stage presence, he is too young for this production, he can’t sing it, he can’t act it, he can’t live it, and he has shown in interviews that he has no reverence for the role.
This show is like church to me. I’m admittedly very protective of it. I’m all for out of the box casting (Like Micheal C Hall who was transcendent when I saw him). But Darren is 200% wrong for this. This will sanitize the show into a Darren Criss concert where all the little gleeks can get their panties wet over him while the show loses its integrity. This is a cash grab and the show deserves so much more.
I wish they would just close it with John which is what this beautiful show (and production) deserves.

@pitfever Oh girl please. That is the only reason they are bringing him in. I think he will make ok box office for them. But they are not bringing him in because he s this amazing talent. He is not.
@Bilbo No one is tar and feathering him. And your assessment that "He will be fine" makes the point. Just "fine" is not a Hedwig one hopes to see.
I hope he is wonderful.

I don't like the pic... But I absolutely hated the NPH photo too... With that tongue sticking out. Ugh. I don't think either photo says anything about Hedwig to me. Oh well, *shrug* I'll be able to save my money... Or buy more shoes. After JCMs run, I don't know who could get me back to the show, but I have no interest in this guy.

"He will be fine" as in, he will rise to the occasion and do the job he was hired to do. The creators of Hedwig aren't dumb. And yeah I'm sure he will be wonderful.

pit fever, you sound a little naive about the business we call show.

If nothing else, Darren will at least be keeping the show open until someone new comes in. Perhaps his replacement will be a more exciting choice; for now, I wish him the best. While I admit I don't have the highest expectations, I am curious about how he'll play the role and hope to catch him sometime during his run.

I think he looks great in the make-up, but the picture itself and styling is a bit too clean for me, that's the best way I can think to say it. I feel like it's missing the sort of dirty grit.

As I mentioned once before, the producers are brilliant. they know what they're doing, down to that poster.

Reminds me of the time Andy Gibb went into Joseph. SH*T I am old.

Well, evtab, John wrote a very impassioned letter to fans imploring them to give Ally Sheedy a chance. Sometimes you try things and sometimes they don't work. Sometimes they do. I look forward to hearing from folks how they think it worked out.

The photo is hideous. It's a bro in make-up. Personally, I think he will run this show into the ground. I wager the show closes after him. I've never heard him sing well live and I'm not sure he has the acting chops. I sense he will run all over the place like it's an Olympic event and butch it up.

What in HELL are you talking about?
Someone put this thread to rest. Please.

Darren has never come across very butch to me, in fact he comes across rather flamboyant.
I don't have too much of an opinion on him in the role, but I wish him all the best.

"This show is like church to me."
Amen. Couldn't have said it better. Was so disappointed in his interviews last week and then this picture...ugh. Does that look like the face of someone who has lived Hedwig's life? Or a frat boy on the way to a Halloween party?
As a friend said on Twitter yesterday, he DC won't be my Hedwig, but he'll be someone's. I'm glad the show is staying open and people who've never heard of it will see it and that John and Stephen will be able to pay the Con Ed for the rest of their lives, but for me the show closes on 4/26.
