I see this "possiblity" in two ways: one. While Darren Criss is exceptionally talented, I don't think the role of Billy Flynn suits him. He doesn't have the voice for it. Also, to be quite honest, I don't think he has the proper stature (i.e. height). Many of the Ladies of Chicago are tall, so it wouldn't look all that great to have a fairly short Billy Flynn. Two: If the Weisslers can convince Criss to take on the role of Billy Flynn, it would be great for them and for the show as well. Darren Criss is a musical theatre "rainmaker" (he'll bring in the crowds). I would be intrigued if this particular rumor turns out to be true. We shall see. RC in Austin, Texas
"Noel [Coward] and I were in Paris once. Adjoining rooms, of course. One night, I felt mischievous, so I knocked on Noel's door, and he asked, 'Who is it?' I lowered my voice and said 'Hotel detective. Have you got a gentleman in your room?' He answered, 'Just a minute, I'll ask him.'" (Beatrice Lillie)
I agree, I am a fan of Criss but he just isn't apporopriate for this or really any other major male role in Chicago. If he were joining something like Rock of Ages I'd be excited, but this just seems "ehh..." Btw, doesn't Chicago do fairly well without putting big stars in the cast?
The real buzz is that Criss (along with managers and agents) has been approached to take over at the end of Nick Jonas' contract. This was in the works while he was still doing the show.
Glee may be at a longer hiatus at that point.
"If my life weren't funny, it would just be true. And that would be unacceptable."
--Carrie Fisher
I can see it happening, just for the fact that Chicago doesn't care who they cast, as long as it brings people in (Usher, Jerry Springer, Melanie Griffith) But god, what awful casting. Darren really needs to stay away from Broadway. He's more suited for a non-equity tour of RENT...
Why does he keep getting picked for belty jazz scores and not pop or rock based work? If he's gonna do something and not get ripped to shreds, he's got to get his agent to pick more appropriate roles for him.
I highly doubt this is true. Criss is relatively high profile at this point in his career. Going in as the first replacement in the lead role of HOW TO SUCCEED... for such a short stint was one thing, but why on earth would he ever want to be the one millionth Billy Flynn in CHICAGO? It would be a terrible move for him.
I would say it's much more likely he'll do another film on his hiatus this summer, just like he did last year (when he shot IMOGENE opposite Kristen Wiig and Annette Bening.)
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
WHY? $$$$$$$$$$$ On everyone's part. It's obvious that the producers don't care about anything but bringing in a name. They'll advertise the hell out of it and rake in the bucks.
BUT....how many of the same screaming mimi's that already saw him in How To would also spring for tix this summer? don't know.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
