I do. I wish she had won. I know Scandalous wasn't the greatest, nor was it the worst show I have ever seen. I enjoyed much of it. Carolee carried the ENTIRE show. She never left the stage. Her singing was amazing and her acting too. She should have won for Parade, a show which I love. I wish she had won this year. She deserved it. I'm sure it's not a popular opinion.
Carolee Carmello is very talented. That she was nominated in what was for the most part a very lackluster show is a testament to that talent. I am sure she will get another opportunity to shine and hopefully be nominated and possibly take home a Tony.
Possibly not, but perhaps Carolee's nomination should be considered rewarding enough. Lilla's snub shows it was a tough category already, and Carolee was recognized in it for a role in a show that closed long ago.
That being said, I hope Carolee does win one in the future. She's been around for quite a while and is extremely talented (Talk about a belter!). Same goes for Terrence Mann. I was very sad to see him lose.
My point was she should not have been judged by the show she was in. What she did.. her performance was enough to win. In my opinion I enjoyed the show and the score. It was "good enough" material that Carolee shouldn't have been penalized.
I do feel bad for Carolee- that she was in Scandalous at all.
Her performance can't be divorced from the production it took place in nor the direction she was given, both of which were extremely lackluster. It's true that it wasn't the worst show ever, but it wasn't any good either. Even an actress as talented as Carolee couldn't rise above the material and make it work.
The nomination was a nice testament to her talent, how well-liked she is in the industry and a sign that she survived the ordeal unscathed.
Marie: Don't be in such a hurry about that pretty little chippy in Frisco.
Tony: Eh, she's a no chip!
I wish Carolee could win all the Tonys she is ever nominated for. When it comes to the acting categories I personally very rarely feel like anyone is undeserving of winning. There are people who I'd wish won more than others of course, like this year. I saw all the nominated performances and I think Patina completely deserved to win, Carolee also deserved to win, and Laura, and Stephanie and Valisia. They were all amazing performances. If I was voting, I would have voted for Carolee. More than a statue I hope she gets a new show. A show worthy of her immense talent.
Without bread we'd just be hungry
but without theatre we'd be dead
I think I am the only person on here who didn't think SCANDALOUS was an absolute trainwreck. That's not to say it was good, by any means, but I thought it had some fun camp moments and I found Carolee to in fantastic voice. I thought she managed to do with SCANDALOUS what Rob McClure couldn't do with CHAPLIN...she managed to elevate the crappy material to a level that I could, at the very least, enjoy.
To clarify: I do think CHAPLIN was the "better" musical of the two, but I had more fun at SCANDALOUS thanks to Carolee. I have no problem admitting that I certainly enjoyed SCANDALOUS more. CHAPLIN bored the hell out of me.
If for nothing else, I am extremely grateful that Kathie Lee stuck with her guns in bringing Carolee to Broadway with the production, instead of attempting to stunt-cast. It was great to see her originate a leading role for the first time in a while. I hope we don't have to wait so long to see her do it again! And hopefully in a better vehicle.
Besides the pleasures Carolee always brings, I really liked Andrew Samonsky's and Edward Watts's jazzy, smoldering duet, "It's Just You." But that's about it.
"Lilla's snub shows it was a tough category already"
If it was a tough category can it still be a snub?
I can buy the argument that Carolee did everything she possibly could have to make the show succeed and perhaps deserved recognition for that.
But I don't think the nominating committee got together and started with the plan to not nominate her and then fill the other spots. That would be a snub. If she didn't get nominated in a tough year, well not so much.
She was lucky just to be nominated and she deserves to lose for choosing to be in that God-awful piece of garbage in the first place. Sorry, but it's true.
It was a big, juicy role that was written especially for her talents. Hell, yeah, I'm going to be involved with that project until the bitter end.
It's too bad that they couldn't correct course, but that's not something the actor can control with these big, splashy Broadway musicals. Doesn't mean that she should pass up on the chance to take on a huge role.
I don't feel for her exactly, but I think she deserved to win. I wrote on my Huff Po blog about how I thought that it was unfortunate that people either didn't attend, or blocked out, Scandalous, because her performance was amazing. I saw her do that show many, many years ago in a Westchester, NY mall and she was basically the only good thing in it. She stuck with it and gave an amazing performance. I knew she would not win, but I echo your sentiment that she should have.
I feel very strongly that Carmello will get her chance. I don't feel bad for her and I know that she's smart enough to know that she had absolutely no chance at winning this one.
I'm pretty sure once she has a juicy role in an actual hit again she's going to win. She's been nominated twice for shows that didn't get great reviews besides her performance. She's incredibly talented and people like her. It's going to happen at some point in the near future.
