Must have been related to the woman who brought a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter and started to make sandwiches for her family during Act 1. I don’t remember the show It was long ago. I blocked it out.

Complained bitterly when it was taken from her.

HERE HERE! this b!tch next to me at head over heels had the AUDACITY to pull out an ENTIRE CONTAINER OF CHINESE FOOD. i looked at her and said "oh no sweetie this isnt a buffet. put that away or im grabbing the usher." she started to eat, i got up and grabbed the usher who made her throw it out. :)

Good for you Rob! I would have said the same thing to the bitch and grabbed the usher! Bringing in outside food is a NONO!

NO. I had some lady sucking on a mint right in my ear during Dear Evan Hansen last year and turned around and said to her “I’m here to hear Ben Platt, not your mint.” and turned back around. She did not put one more piece of candy in her mouth the entire show.

I am one who suffers from the occasional low blood sugar attack, but I try to be prepared. This may mean snacking on something before the show starts, but it's generally as quietly and unobtrusively as possible.

No.  Just no.  Places you eat: kitchens, restaurants, dining rooms, cafeterias, etc.  Places you don eat: theatres, classrooms, houses of worship, museums, etc.

I’m hardcore and old school about this, but you don’t eat in public spaces that aren’t meant for eating for a multitude of reasons. People don’t clean up after themselves and the sound and noise are distracting. We’re not even going to go into the allergy factors that are small but do exist.

My only exception is water, because I always have some sort of big water bottle with me. I have chronic dry mouth from medication and I’ve become quite skilled at doing that move where you try to discretely shimmy down your seat so you’re sunken down in it and open the canteen and raise it to you face to drink from it while trying to not be seen drinking from it.

Then there was that time at MASTER CLASS (Dixie Carter), when I sat behind a college aged gal who slurped split pea soup out of a styrofoam cup throughout the 1st act...I had scent and sound to cope with.

Outside food goes beyond annoying other patrons. The mess left behind causes more clean up for custodial staff. And then there are rodents to worry about.

I can't tell you how many times I have stepped over empty yellow m&m shopping bags, candy bags and crushed M&M's.I have seen people try to bring full pizzas into a theater. I stopped a woman and her daughter one evening prior to curtain who busted out 2 entire chicken and collard green dinners.

And this presents problems for the cast:

I was in a regional production of SOUTH PACIFIC when people in the audience took out foil wrapped chicken to eat. As they were close to the stage (in a small theater), we could smell the food and hear the foil.I was salivating on stage.

I keep them at the very bottom of my zippered purse, and unzip/dig/rezip only when I need one, which is every 20 minutes (oddly, only during theatrical performances). Iunwrap each candyas slowly as possible – usually taking a full 5 to 10 minutes each– so as not to disturb anyone (thank goodness the actors are unable to hear me, or I'd really worry). I only wish that everyone were as civilized and considerate as I am. You're welcome.

Did you ever consider maybe having a few unwrapped already in your ziplock bag since they're hard candies anyway? I mean it seems like you're saying you're extremely quiet, and stuff like that doesn't really bother me, but maybe it will save you some time and worry.

PatrickDC said: "I agree with those who are confused why someone can't wait one hour until intermission or the end of Act 2 to eat. It must be they are so used to eating in movie theaters, they think the same thing is ok in live theaters. And yes, it's an economic consideration: Theaters are pushing the snack bar. It wasn't that long ago that food and beverages were absolutely forbidden in live theaters. Now it's ok.

I have a chronic sore throat and need to have lozenges at the ready. My favorites are Fisherman's Friend. They are very dry and don't stick together like other cough drops when I transfer them into a snack-size ziploc bag. The baggie makes zero noise, but just in case I always wait until applause or a loud music moment to grab a FF lozenge.
"

Thank you :)) Maybe they can sell these at the snack bars too. I don't mind the snack noises so much, but one thing I can't stand is the constant coughing and throat scratching during a show. I once sat through a show where an audience member spent the entire show coughing or clearing his throat every few minutes in a not so subtle way. It was distracting.

Wow, I can't even with that story. Something similar happened to me on a flight. A woman next to me opened a bunch of tupperware with food which had a strong odor. I'm not one to hinder anyone from eating anywhere if they so please, but this was a 40 minute flight from take off to disembarking - it could have easily waited. I'm not even sure how she got that all through TSA.

I hope these theaters don't follow the new trend of dine-in movie theatres. Imagine theatregoers dining on full meals in those already too tight seats.

As the campaign against single use plastics grows stronger, perhaps one day we will be spared the crinkling of Poland Spring bottles during a show. One can dream.

I was at Falsetto's during the revival and some kid and his mom pulled out Nathan's fries and preceded to eat them.  The smell was overwhelming and I still don't know how they got them inside the theater in the first place!

I'll never forget the night I was to a production at the Lunt Fontaine.  I was seated in the front mezz.  Three women arrived just before curtain, giggling and carrying cups of soda.  They sat down in the front row.  Sometime during the performance one of the ladies placed her soda on the ledge in front of her.  Evidently at some point she was unable to reign in her enthusiasm for what was happening on stage and moved in such a way causing the soda to fall from the ledge and splashing onto an unsuspecting patron seated in the orchestra section below.  The resulting scream was heard throughout the theater.

It depends on the food as long as it doesn't make noise or smell its fine with me.

I recently had a health scare that now requires me to watch what I eat and watch my blood sugar levels, so in the event of emergencies I keep a small baggie of candy and a protein bar in my bag for whatever issue could possibly come up. However I will say I definitely do unwrap them before the show and they aren’t noisy (so they aren’t causing any obstructions to the people around me). People bringing in full meals though is ridiculous and rude.

I wish theatres would just sell the candy unwrapped and put it in a cup or box. the unwrapping is noisy and disruptive.
