I missed that announcement, too. Running three weeks instead of two.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

The tone is also very different: gentle, whimsical and precocious, with much less of the "edgier" material that came in around the time of the television specials and defined it moving forward. Charlie Brown's anxiety and various psychological complexes, Lucy's histrionic nastiness, the total absence of Sally's zaniness, etc.

It's a little cute, a little sweet. And Lippa's use of jazz and Latin touches throughout gestured towards the Latin cool-jazz that Vince Guaraldi made the voice of the franchise.

I will bet that HB will be the audience pleaser.  I saw it 3 times 60 years ago, and there were multiple showstoppers at every performance.  I recently played the cast recording for the first time in a long while, and find it on repeat because it is so enjoyable.  I personally think that the score is much better than Kiss.  I have never liked Charlie Brown, which I also sawfor the first time almost 60 years ago...it just doesn't seem to me like the right choice.

I only know the score but she could absolutely do a great job singing it.

But there are other, talented Black women who could do a great job too. Adrienne Warren, Christiani Pitts, Joy Woods (probably busy with Galileo), Amber Gray, Patina Miller, Joaquina K, Lorna C, Hailey Kilgore, Maleah Joi, etc.

Uggams was 24, but it was originally written for Lena Horne who was almost 50. But they tailored it for a younger actor after Horne dropped out, and Laurents felt they should have abandoned it altogether.

The current small UK tour of Kiss is getting good press (although I did find one positive review odd--they had a problem with the song My First Woman because it implied underage "sexual coercion..."  Have we come to this??)

Curious if they'll be using the tweaks Laurents made for the 2004 production of Hallelujah Baby!

I'm so deeply intrigued by this show (largely because there's such scarce online literature regarding the original production). I've listened to the OBCR a handful of times but the score does little to explain the plot. For those who have seen it, what exactly is the point of having the characters' ages frozen in time? Is there some greater commentary on the (from what I believe to be largely unexplained) agelessness of the characters a la Caryl Churchill's Cloud 9?

There were more than just tweaks made to Hallelujah Baby in 2004--it was a much bigger revision than, say, the one Laurents and Sondheim had done to Do I Hear a Waltz a few years earlier (which WAS the version that Encores based their production on in that case.)  Would Amanda Green need to get a credit for the revised version?

It absolutely would be.  Leslie Uggams had a strong voice, but also a sweet one; I think that sweetness works well for the character.  I believe JAR has both, but I imagine there are other people who would as well.

Someone else asked about the passage of time.  I was intended (I believe) to show that things change slowly for the characters over time, but do change, while the characters are still themselves.  I will remind that the show had issues, mainly the fact that the passage of time with them not aging actually sort of got lost, but the score was terrific, the performances of Uggams, Lillian Heyman, and Robert Hooks were excellent, and will provide ample opportunity for the people who assume their roles to shine.  Barbara Sharma and Marilyn Cooper also added some comical moments, so there are a bunch of good vignette roles.  The only weak link was the 'white male lead', Allen Case, who I had never heard of before and never heard of again.  His solo was probably the either the weakest song in the show or was damaged by the fact that he had a really weak voice.  The right person could probably make a case for the song and the role being better than I think.

To Tenor8674, I would not rule this one out so quickly.  Good Jule Styne classic overture, some really good songs and orchestrations, and some laughs.  Of all the shows that failed in the 60s and 70s, this may be my favorite.  Ironically, the same season produced two other flops (one mega) that I also loved, The Happy Time (which was a bloated production...should have been scaled for a smaller Music Box sized theatre, and it played the Broadway.  The other one was Darling of the Day, also with a Jule Styne Score (with Yip Harburg lyrics) and a performance by Patricia Routledge that made you love the actress before the curtain came down, even if you had never heard of her before.  But Hallelujah Baby has the best score.
