Hope this portends to a full live album! He sounds incredible!"
Honestly I was gonna say the exact same thing, if we can’t get a pro-shot or limited Broadway engagement, a full live cast recording seems like a very good alternative!
Stamos’ unease works well for me. Almost like how a modern King (e.g. Charles) wouldn’t do well with a song and dance routine. A bit awkward and trying to participate, that kinda thing. Plus some Phil Spector leer. But obviously Gad wants to have a crack so it will be nice to see him as well.
Adam Lambert is the best sung Judas ever. And I thought no one could beat Tony Vincent or Zubin Varla.
I hope Raul’s voice lasts the weekend. He does tend to give an entire season’s worth of performances on opening night.
Seeing Cynthia as Jesus struggle with the lateral part of the cross was very powerful and moving.

I realized, while watching the clips, that with Jesus Christ Superstar I become one of those people who gets very picky because I have seen (or heard) so many different versions of the show, on film, TV and in person.
But it looks very impressive. Lambert is the standout, and he has the best role. Soo sounds lovely as usual.
Gad played Herod on Saturday night according to Reddit.

Just got home from the Bowl from Saturday's show. It was great, and yes Gad was in. He made a Covid joke and a Stamos joke. I dunno if he was at full vocal capacity, but could sell it and the audience was shocked to see him (a great hidden entrance behind feathers) and loved him.

Gad was great and his ad libs got a lot of laughs. After seeing him, I just can't imagine Stamos in the role.
Overall, the production was great. I didn't see the show as a battle between Erivo and Lambert. Both were excellent (as was everyone in the company). Erivo got a long standing ovation after Gethsemane.

Watching videos from Saturday, seems like Lambert sang a lot of the songs with different choices than Friday, but still sounds incredible. noticed it a lot in Superstar

Same.. I would love for them to bring this to Radio City for a week. It would look and sound gorgeous there.
Not enough love for Sergio Trujillo's staging. He also did a great job with the REAL WOMEN HAVE CURVES choreography. One of the current best.

Its all damn impressive, but Lamberts choices are especially incredible in the clips I have seen. He feels born to sing this part, just as he was perfectly cast as the Emcee.
Went to last night's show, and was so impressed with everyone, it was incredible! The staging was well done, the sound was rich and full (with a technical hitch or two), and man, those are some talented performers.
For me, the highlights were "Everything's Alright" and "Gethsemane" - both absolutely beautiful renditions of those songs. Phillipa Soo's voice has so much warmth, it was gorgeous for this. And Adam and Cynthia both delivered vocally, though i thought Cynthia was a stronger actor. I thought Raúl was probably the best at acting his part, even with less impressive songs. So glad there are a million clips online to relive this through.
I am really eager to see a revival at some point - though I've seen the movie and listened to the cast albums, this was the only time I've ever seen it on stage.
Wow, these clips are fantastic.
This was beautifully done. Congratulations to everyone involved.
The vocals are fantastic but everything else I'm seeing...even for a concert production, just unimaginative. Remember when this show would regularly look and feel wild and subversive? It will make for a good album, though! Which is maybe the truest form of JCSS.
When you see what encores can do with a concert staging you wonder how much time they had to put this together. Adam’s vocals have the rock edge the music needs but the acting and movement in the clips were awkward. Everyone else seemed geared towards theater performances. Superstar hits best when it leans into rock with all the 60’ 70’s rockstar affectations.

Ok I’ve seen almost all of the clips from both nights and call me crazy, but I think a limited Broadway run should definitely be in the cards (in fact it’s rumored that much like Jamie Lloyd’s Evita and Jellicle Ball, producers are eyeing some houses as we speak). The ALW renaissance (The “Lloyd Webbersance” as I like to call it) is about to go full speed ahead in NYC.
If you base the look of the show on the clips alone, you'll have no idea how brilliant and complex the physical production really was. We were there Friday night, and were absolutely dazzled by the whole package of Trujillo's staging, set against dazzling lighting design and really sophisticated digital LED screens that created a back wall scrim with the orchestra behind, and also wrapped 2 platforms downstage. They mixed in complex graphic images with abstracted views of nature (the trees in the Garden of Gesthemane) and live filmed closeups of the performers for a constantly changing stage picture. A stage-wide lighting truss rose and lowered upstage and combined with a vertical truss that tracked left and right to create Jesus' crucifix in the final moments of the show. Erivo even rose up on a hydraulic deck upstage center on her first entrance and then in her final ascent onto the cross-- a gorgeous book-ending of the staging.
But words won't do this performance justice-- I'll just say the Bowl stage has rarely been put to such thrilling use.

I was so impressed by those screens, especially the way they were used in Superstar! I asked my husband how they were doing it because I couldn't figure it out - it looked so cool.
I love a production. Any good pics or vids?
