The new girls don't have hours of training to take on these roles, so I understand where the backlash comes from. This young lady wished to play Fanny and her training besides vocal lessons was the cast album, film/and soundtrack. She is playing a version of herself, in her bedroom praying to play Barbra as Fanny in FG and not making the role her own. Thus we are reminded of the originator.
You would not want to hear/see Ciara playing Effie White and the same should have applied to Beanie.

Matt Doyle and John-Andrew Morrison should definitely be in. And Jefferson Mays is likely pretty solid too, though I cant see him winning a third trophy for Music Man. But that leaves just 2 slots. And you have other options in both Company and A Strange Loop (Claybourne Elder, Chris Fitzgerlad, Antwayn Hooper) which are more well liked shows, so they could start just checking those boxes. There's also Marc Kudisch and Todd Almond for Girl From the North Country (another mostly well liked show), and AJ Shively and Sidney DuPont from Paradise Square (not going to be a huge Tony darling most likely, but both those men get more to do than Jared Grimes...and I would argue they are dance parts which have better choreo than what was created for Eddie). A nomination isn't impossible for Jared...I just think he's probably in 6th or 7th place at the moment."
First of all, Jefferson Mays only has one Tony, not two. Second of all, this is the lineup I'm currently predicting for Best Featured Actor in a Musical:
Matt Doyle-Company Claybourne Elder-Company Jared Grimes-Funny Girl John-Andrew Morrison-A Strange Loop Austin Scott-Girl From the North Country
Frankly, I've been annoyed about this show since it was announced, and I looked of video of the leading lady singing.
Anyone who knows the first thing about musicals knows that the book to Funny Girl is helplessly weak. And, in order for it to work, you need to have a phenomenally talented, breakout star in the lead. Why oh why would they cast Feldstein? Look, she IS talented. She really won me over in the Clinton movie. But I'm sorry there is no point to the whole enterprise if Don't Rain on My Parade isn't belted with perfect pitch, across the footlights and to the back row of the balcony. It's like having sex without finishing.
It's a disservice to the actress, and to the public. It did get me to thinking though. Who is out there today who can belt like Streisand? ARE there any young LuPones who can thrill me the way Patti did when I saw Anything Goes 35 years ago? It doesn't seem like it. Much of the singing on Broadway seems so thin to me now.
Feldstein, facing consequences of this response, now has the unenviable task of performing this show 8 times a week as long as it runs. Most posters tonight have surveyed the reviews and surely must finally ponder: what were they thinking? What a disservice to this young performer, to open thus on B'way, to eschew even a quiet tryout in another venue, which many of us have pointed out from day one would've been kinder to both show and star. It's no tragedy at the box office, not yet, since it's selling out. And may continue to do so. But those 8 shows a week are a steep climb, and despite the squeals and cheering in previews, a challenge to duplicate night after night in the weeks and months ahead as this press becomes known.

Except that this will also be possible dates when Tony Award Nominating Committee members could be wanting to see the production before they convene to make the nominations to be announced on May 9th. Opening this close to Tony nominations should be when no one is taking days off.

Jesse Green's review is so fascinating to me. He is more fair and sympathetic to Beanie than I would have expected him to be. But, he seemed to have a marked dislike for the overall production, much more than other reviewers.

Badsinging, Disappointing, Excruciating
See it if You want to spend over $200 to sit in the last row in the highest balcony and listen to nasally, screechy, off pitch singing.
Don't see it if You have anything better to do, like staying home to make toast.
Also I love Beanie and she plays the comedic part of the role wonderfully - but she does not have the voice for this role. Fanny Brice has to SING. If she can’t sing, the show doesn’t work…
Unrelated to opening night and reviews, but does anyone do GoldDerby predictions? Strange that they don't have Jared Grimes as an eligible contender for Featured Actor. Also missing from all the "experts" predictions.

The reviews, according to didtheylikedit, is almost equally to “The Music Man”, can the show get the nom above the Jackman starrer?"
There are many past occurrences of "filler" nominations. If it was a busier season maybe she wouldn't have a chance. Of course she'll slip in last minute with zero chances of winning.
