Oh. Trust me. I am SHOCKED The Prom is still running. It's a cute show but I just don't get the hype behind it at ALL and was SHOCKED when it got such rave reviews. I am just as shocked it got so much love today thought expected if cus of the previously mentioned raves. My guess is that when it got such rave reviews when it opened the producers were like "Let's see where we can go with this" and have kept going to see if they could somehow market this to Tony glory and low and behold, here we are with it today. If not for the rave reviews, I am SURE they would have packed up weeks ago. If not for it's strong showing today, they might have posted but now they can hold on now til Tony night. BUT you better believe that if they don't get a boost from the awards broadcast, it will be one of the first to post after the Tonys if not THE first.

I am very surprised that The Prom is still running as well. I think if it doesn't close before then, it'll close when Beth Leavel leaves. She's not a really big name draw, but, by that time, that show will have definitely overstayed its welcome on Broadway in regards to how much money it's making.
I personally also didn't like The Prom very much, but I think objectively it's not a show with any signs of longevity for its run. I predict one or two Tonys at the very most.

I think we have to see how Prom does at the awards. If it doesn’t win big, I’m sure it will close.
Kong is in danger sooner because of its lack of nominations.
Both shows have horrendous grosses (at least this year). Even if they’re selling more tickets the last few weeks, they’re selling them cheaper (look at a avg. ticket price).
Cher and Pretty Woman I think will last through summer at least ( grosses are a bit better).
Be More Chill is the wild card. It hasn’t sold amazingly well, so we’ll have to see if that picks up soon.

I think the odds are against Be More Chill for picking up soon. Considering it getting one Tony nomination, which it has a 0% chance of winning, the only thing that really could've made a difference in raising ticket sales now will not happen.
New York City only has so many members of the fanbase who will pay for a ticket to see the show, and they're running out rapidly.
I think a lot of people are seeing Be More Chill because of all the hype, and wanting to know what the hype is about. They go to the show, come to find that it really isn't that good, and then tell their friends not to bother. Word of mouth is important, even in a negative way.

In a tiny town like New York, with almost no outside visitors, I would imagine the fan base of 10-14 year olds would get exhausted pretty quickly. LOL.
THE PROM will probably still be the first to post its closing notice.
But it takes a lot to turn a show into a hit, and a Best Musical nomination alone won't do that. Groundhog Day, Great Comet, Spongebob, and Carousel were all doing good business in April/May and were gone by the end of September. (Primarily looking at Beetlejuice and the not-nominated Be More Chill.)

Dear Evan Hansen appeals to both teenagers and their parents. It talks about the growing problem of poor mental health in teenagers and how it affects everyone regardless of their financial status. It also speaks to single parents and how difficult it is to raise children. The love story is a secondary plot.
The main drive of the protagonist in BMC is to be cool and get the girl. The main drive of Evan is to belong to a community, virtual or otherwise, which speaks to a four-quadrant demographic. It's not even a close comparison.

Was that directed at me? Because, for the record, I find all those plots tiresome. But sometimes the execution can overcome it.
At least The Prom seems to be putting up a spirited fight.

That is one thing I CAN'T fault them on. They are a little show with a LOT of heart all around as well as very gracious. As much as I don't get the raves behind it and the hype, I can't hate on it for even a second because they are like.... the Miss Congeniality of this season.
Well, it’s TONY night and a lot of these shows are still running with no announced closing dates. Will that happen tomorrow?

I just can’t see King Kong, the prom or be more chill lasting through the summer. And think that one of them will in the next 10 days announce a closing. I kinda feel that no one wants to be “that show” to make the first announcement.
But was it not only a couple years ago that there were like three announcements in two days shortly after tonys
i think pretty woman will ride it out till September or just enough time to segway into the tour
and Cher i think (with the tony performance) will have enough gusto through to January imo. Especially if they do a smart showcase. There was an article up here written how right now there maybe an over saturation of Cher (which don’t get me wrong I love) but they were saying in Canada how she hasn’t been selling well. Right now you can see her on tour and residency plus a broadway show. In the case of a Cher fan they said typically they go for the living legend to see not the imitator. It’s actually too bad that she coincided a tour with the show.
FWIW, I think the first show to announce a closing/early shuttering was KING LEAR (supposed to run through July, but closes today)
Sad to see Network close! It was always planned but I just didn’t realize!

Honestly, I hate to say this because I know someone involved in the production, but the BMC hang out situation makes me think they aren't going to be open much longer. I don't know how long that will delay a closing notice.

i don't see how BeetleJuice makes it past Labor day
Beautiful also, Prom, King Kong, BMC, waitress
i think a lot of shows leave us by labor day
I have a feeling we are going to get close notices for The Prom and Gary today. I know nothing, just a hunch.
didn't Gary already post that they were closing early?
I think we'll hear closing notices from The Prom, King Kong and Pretty Woman soon. The Cher Show and Beetlejuice probably make it to the end of the year.
I remember Stephanie J Block mentioning some where that her contract runs till the end of the year.

I don’t think King Kong is operating to the standard Broadway model. I think they have some deep pockets to keep it running in hopes of a pick up over the summer. I think the Prom might be sustainable at its current level but I don’t think mid-America will be running to see the show. I think BMC is the most endangered.

And they could still post a closing notice today. The length of an individual actor's contract has nothing to do with how long a show will actually run.

I sense the Cher Show will play until the end of summer. Its currently playing to half empty houses, at least during the week. No disrespect because she is sublime in the show, but SJB's Tony won't sell any seats.

As I posted on here last week GARY is closing June 23rd, expect a announcement tomorrow
