Stark Sands! I was on the fence before, but I will definitely be seeing it now.
"You travel alone because other people are only there to remind you how much that hook hurts that we all bit down on. Wait for that one day we can bite free and get back out there in space where we belong, sail back over water, over skies, into space, the hook finally out of our mouths and we wander back out there in space spawning to other planets never to return hurrah to earth and we'll look back and can't even see these lives here anymore. Only the taste of blood to remind us we ever existed. The earth is small. We're gone. We're dead. We're safe."
-John Guare, Landscape of the Body

Look, I'm a fan of Matt Caplan's. I was just relaying what I had heard. Who knows what the situation was at Berkeley or how the fallout ensued. It's too bad though because he's a very talented and nice guy and this looks to be a possible hit.
"sweetTb'way is correct. Matt was fired for being difficult to work with."
I'm going to have to third this. From what I understand, it had to more to do with Caplan not delivering what was wanted from him in terms of vocals. Do not interpret this as meaning "he was fired because he couldn't sing".
"...everyone finally shut up, and the audience could enjoy the beginning of the Anatevka Pogram in peace."
Matt was not fired. And the reason that he will not be in the Broadway cast has nothing to do with him being "difficult to work with". Some of you people should be a little more careful about the things you post online with such authority.
I remember Matt didn't perform on opening night. I personally thought he was just fine in the role, vocally, that is. He DID seem a little too old for the role, playing an 18-year-old kid alongside Michael Esper and John Gallagher he looked a little out-of-place.
anyone else pick up on the fact that all 3 original mortiz's from spring awakening obc are in American Idiot (John Gallager Jr., Brian Charles Johnson, and Gerard Canonico) ?!
Brian was the OBC Otto, but he did understudy Moritz. Gerard understudied Moritz when Gallagher and then Blake Bashoff were full-time Moritzes before he took over until the end of the Broadway show.
Matt Caplan missed many shows at Berkley Rep, and while he was terrific when he was on, his stamina became an issue of significant concern.
He and Morgan Weed were both replaced for purely creative reasons.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.
I for one will miss Matt, I liked his performance and voice, and he was always nice to talk to after the show.... But, at the same time, I'm looking forward to seeing what Sands has to offer the part (I'll be honest, I know nothing about him)... But mainly I'm just happy that for the most part, its the same awesome group of individuals I got to know last fall. Very excited to see them all on TV this Sunday.
This def gives me reason to turn on the Grammys for the first time in, oh, 5 years. I hope that I don't have to suffer through too much before the cast performs! Very excited to see this production in April!
