Kristin Chenoweth's Tony loss tonight has saddened me deeply. Her performance was a pinnacle of comedy and vocal prowess, in a role that was seemingly made just for her and she was born to play. Her loss has also had me thinking of her future in the Broadway theater. As we all know, her appearances on Broadway have been every few years (since 2003: 2006, 2010 and 2015). By this math, her next appearance will probably be around 2021. She will be 52 years old. What role do you see her appearing in next? Will it be her first original role in 18 years? A revival of a classic? I've been racking my brain and trying to think of some revivals she might be good in. I think he could be a terrific Sally in Follies, although her usual comedic roles would make it the most dramatic thing she's ever done onstage. Maybe one that she's always longed to do, like Hello Dolly! could be next for her. Kristin Chenoweth as Dolly Gallagher Levi, with all her songs in new arrangements showing off her splendid range. Could she work as Annie Oakley? Bernadette was a similar age when she played her in 1999, and Kristin could be charming and lovely.
New shows could be written for her! Chenoweth as Dolly Parton in a musical about the life of the country music legend. Chenoweth starring in a stage adaptation of Pushing Daisies as the oft-scorned Olive Snook. A crazy idea I had the other day was Kristin Chenoweth and Idina Menzel in a musical version of the Amy Poehler-Tina Fey comedy Baby Mama (which would be ridiculous but could be hilarious).
Does anyone have any brainstorms for Kristin's next Broadway musical?
"Contentment, it seems, simply happens. It appears accompanied by no bravos and no tears."
Maybe an original musical? She really should have won tonight. But Kristin as always is a class act and took the loss very well. She didn't seem bothered at all by it and it's clear her and Kelli are close friends. Ya win some ya lose some.
You could tell when Kelli got a standing ovation, it was for all her nominated performances and not just for the king and I. Kelli won tonight but not for her king and I role.
But hey, world keeps on spinnin.
Countdown til Jordan comes on raging about how much loves me! 3..2..1...
I really think she needs an original musical where she gets to be a bit more subdued and dramatic but not somber and has songs that make use of her soprano. I think On the Twentieth Century was the show her fans and theatre-going audiences were waiting for because Charlie Brown, The Apple Tree (though I think it's one of her best acting jobs), and Promises, Promises didn't have her show off her high register whereas 20th Century had that in spades. However, it seemed like people underestimated comedy and the role of Lily Garland seemed lightweight compared to the role of Anna that is generous in dramatic material for an actress playing her.
I agree with the original musical idea. Something written for her that shows off her strongest talents. She's great at comedy but her Glee work showed me she can pull at the heartstrings too (One Less Bell To Answer). I'd love her to also do something in the vein of If/Then (not the plot, but the more adult, contemporary type of show)
Hello, Dolly! Is not a show that will ever need new arrangements (as shown by the terrible film adaptation). Besides, we need a broadway belter - LuPone would be ideal.
"Sticks and stones, sister. Here, have a Valium." - Patti LuPone, a Memoir
"You could tell when Kelli got a standing ovation, it was for all her nominated performances and not just for the king and I. Kelli won tonight but not for her king and I role."
Wow you must be a mind reader or something? It has to be the reason you are certain about this.
Yeah, I thought she was lip-syncing, too. Maybe she was on some sort of vocal rest, or couldn't manage doing the hosting gig, the excerpted performance, and eight shows a week. I won't chastise her so much for that. It was a strenuous May and early June for the poor girl.
In any event, I'd love to see her in a role where she doesn't have to rely on her cutesy schtick. It will never happen, but it'd be nice. I think her next role, however, will be as a patient at her plastic surgeon's office, though. Gosh, she's gotten a lot of work done, hasn't she?
"I'd love to see Kelli and Kristen switch roles for a night."
That's just it. Kelli could never do Lily Garland, Cunegonde or Glinda. Kristin can do Francesca, Anna and Nellie. Only role that Kristin did that Kelli would have been a better pick is as Fran.
But we'll see Kristin probably next in Rise The Tammy Faye Bakker Story or Soap Dish or when a Dolly Parton show finally gets done.
I hope she gets something written for her that is good enough for her. I honestly think OTTC is a really bad show. A great part for her but in an agonizing show.
If she wants to do another comedy, I think she'd be great as Lilli Vanessi in Kiss Me Kate.
If she wants to go dramatic, I think she'd be a strong and inspired choice as Mother in Ragtime. Thinking of her singing "Back to Before" is giving me chills.
I'm not sure if she would fit the show well, but she could do the two main ladies in Follies.
I agree with what appears to be the consensus that she'd be a great Dolly Levi.
And of course, I would pay out of my ass to see her in an original musical, preferably a fictional musical comedy. I personally think we're due for a new grand comedic soprano role.
