Then you must be mishearing things.

Seaview, Sue Wagner, John Johnson, Jean Doumanian, and Robert Fox are the lead producers.

These are all producers with ties to Shubert and a track record of producing limited-run plays with stars.

Rudin was not the first or last to do that. (and he fired the two of those people who used to work on his shows)

They are doing it, most likely, for the challenge, the prestige and the accolades- being the toast of BWAY in a he sell out hit- which can do wonders for the ego and for the next possible career move."

Let's not pretend that they aren't being paid handsomely! (for commercial productions at least –– it's a different story for Carell and RDJ at the nonprofits)

Yes it's a small fraction of what they'd get on a film, but Clooney will undoubtedly be earning north of 100K a week, plus advances/option payments, as the star, the playwright, and the source material.

This also strikes me as the type of middlebrow play that's going to be done at every single regional and community theatre.

He’s asking Joe Biden to step aside.  Well Clooney, you can go fvck yourself.  Good luck on broadway!  I won’t be there!

Most of this forum is also asking for you to step aside

Well, I kind of agree with that. I understand that Clooney has an opinion like everyone else and it's his full constitutional right to express it. It's surprising that his particular opinion is all over the news as if it matters... Literally nobody asked for his opinion. What's more upsetting is that Republicans lined up united behind Trump and will be voting for him no matter. Democrats are all over the place, there's no unity. At this point, it's either Democrats vote against Trump or this country is over as we know it. I would sincerely suggest Clooney to learn his lines for his future play instead of making political statements.

It honestly just feels like Clooney and his wife are mad about the Israel-Gaza situation, and this is his petty way of getting Biden out. His opinion doesn’t mean much to me, but all of this would make me think twice about supporting his show.

Are we still going to play the “celebrities can’t make political statements” game. You can disagree but it’s a tired trope to tell celebrities and athletes to stick to acting or sports just when it’s convenient.

At the risk of getting political on this forum, Clooney is making points everyone else is saying in private, including many who are still publicly supporting Biden. If you can't see that this ends with a different Democrat on top of the ticket then you are not opening your eyes to the direction this is heading in. So Clooney is not speaking out to cause division, he's ahead of the curve. And his points are thoughtful and articulate. He's certainly not slamming Biden, he's just saying what so many are thinking and feeling. Of course Clooney and everyone else with a sound mind would vote for Biden over Trump if Biden ends up staying but at the current trajectory, Biden seems headed for a landslide defeat and why not save democracy while we still can.

But this doesn't impact me one way or the other with regards to Clooney's show. Nor will it impact ticket sales. It's not like Clooney came out and said he's supporting Trump so it's really a non-issue when it comes to Broadway and ticket sales.

I don’t believe he’s heading toward a landslide defeat, I think the polls are wrong as usual, and this is much ado about nothing.  These scared democrats would be in much worse shape with Gavin newsom or Kamala at the top of the ticket.  They wont be happy no matter what.

I never said he can’t have an opinion. He’s entitled to, of course. I’m not angry at him or anything, but my reaction to his opinion and how I respond to it with where I spend my money is also a decision that I’m entitled to make.

Newsom or Kamala would be the end of the election, both are disastrous candidates. Biden has won once and can win again. Dems have to unite already and stop pretending there's another viable choice on the horizon

Looking at the box office for Mr. Clooney's most recent directorial effortThe Boys in the Boat, its receipts likely did not cover production & marketing costs.
"

None of Clooney's directorial efforts have been major financial successes, and only one got real awards traction. He's a pretty bad director, imo. Good Night & Good Luck is the best thing he's done by a long shot, and even that's just okay.

Big stars come to Broadway regularly. Remember all the yelling around 2010 when"celebrities took over Broadway" - Denzel, ScarJo, Catherine Zeta Jones, Daniel Craig, Hugh Jackman, Chris Walken, Jude Law, Kelsey Grammer, Sean Hayes, Carrie Fisher, and others.

Clooney, Downey, and Carell are an interesting case study:Broadway may have been a goal for a while, they're hovering around 60, all could use a career pivot, and 60 is a good time for an agent to say "hey, why don't you try that thing you've always wanted to do before you're too tired or before it looks like a desperate cash grab?"

I do think GN&GL feels like a bit of a cash grab. But it's got lead producers who know their way around limited-run plays (the prolific team of Seaview & Wagner/Johnson,alongside Jean Doumanian and Robert Fox).
"

Robert Downey Jr hardly needs a career pivot.  With The Sympathizer following his Oscar for Oppenheimer, I'd say he is in a position any actor, even any star, would envy.

Clooney hasn't starred in a hit movie since The Descendants in 2011 (his appearance in Gravity two years later is pretty much a cameo).  None of his subsequent projects, and there have been many, have caught on.  His career definitely needs a jump-start.  I'm not sure if Good Night and Good Luck on Broadway is likely to be it, but I wish him luck.

His politically correct vibe has done a lot to sustain his celebrity, so his comments on Biden are likely to rattle a fair share of people.  After the election, no one is likely to remember or care.  If Trump is re-elected, there will be far too many other worries on our minds.  If Biden is, we'll be holding our collective breaths to see how long he can be propped up while wondering who exactly is doing the propping.

It's a shame Broadway has become so unaffordable at a time when more and more people are likely to need it.
