"Thoughts so far: Ace is a horrible Berger. His acting is like a high school production of HAIR trying to emulate this revival."
The moment I heard Ace was going to play Berger I knew he would not play the part well. This was DEFINETLEY NOT the right role for him. He can't really act well for this part and his voice doesn't really suit the songs. Updated On: 3/9/10 at 10:57 PM
I'm sure the cast will get their feet under them. People who saw the show 500 times with the original cast are going to have to adjust to the reality of a new cast...or move on to American Idiot.
"Overall, if this were the first time I had seen this production, I would wonder what the fuss was about. This revival of HAIR has been called a movement but now it appears to be more of a shrug."
did you see it tonight, or are you just jumping to conclusions? have you ever seen Ace act? did you see him as Kenickie? he owned it. surprise, but he did. give him a chance. i'm sure that there were Groff fans that didn't like will at first, too. and on and on and on...

WTF are you rambling about? Did you not see that he wrote originally of his impressions at INTERMISSION? Groff played Claude in the park almost 2 years ago & Ace is playing Berger. Kenickie isn't exactly a difficult role... Updated On: 3/9/10 at 11:18 PM
sorry, my bad about Groff. My point, which i totally screwed up, was that there are always complaints when there is change. But the producers seem so smitten with this new cast, i would like to defer to their expertise right now.
i was responding to beautywickedlover's post. not colorthehouse. Color was there - i respect the assessment.

I have no opinion on the new cast either way having not seen them perform, but, well, of course the producers are going to appear smitten with them. They're not going to announce, "Well, here are the replacements. This is the best we could get. We tried." Don't be naive about it.
Saw the originals 3 times, obviously I love the show and I have to say that this new tribe is just awesome. Yes they def need to settle into some things and find their groove but I have to say I was just blown away. The production holds up magnificently with this new talented cast, and I cant wait to check back in when they have really found their way with it. I'm sure it will be just as magical as the original tribe!
i saw it tonight, i didnt think it was that bad. in act 1 ace wasn't winning me over, but act 2 was better. he did state this was a big change for him and didn't this tribe only have like 2 or 3 weeks to get this together? once they settle in i see it getting much better. i also thought diana's vocals were really good, and kyle was much better than i thought he would be. just in case this helps anyone.
A tad off topic, but to the person who said Hair isn't rocket science, is she serious? Hair is a very deep musical...you can schedule an entire semester's worth of class just taking it apart, studying the book, the lyrics, the music, reading interviews by Rado and Ragni, and what not. I should know, I took such a class.. lol I wouldn't be surprised if not a lot of the actors are understanding the depth of the book and lyrics right now. Like others, over time, I hope the message will sink in for the actors, they grow into their roles, and better convey their message it to the audience. In the review that ljay889 posted, the audience was actually clapping along with The Flesh Failures and that, as the reviewer said, is a problem.
Also, when I saw it like 2 weeks ago, what's up with Vanessa Ray belting Frank Mills? I miss Allison Case.
Ooo I'm so happy Briana has been bumped up to Sheila understudy as well as Crissy. She played Sheila in the production I musically directed at Emerson and she was incredible. (Maya Sharpe played Dionne in our production as well.)
A good friend of mine saw the show today and was really encouraged. He thought the tribe as a whole was great, but was especially touched by Kyle, who he thought read very young, and by Diana's vocals. I can't speak for them, but I would think they'd improve upon more performances. I do think it's a bit tough to be judging a cast with 85% new members on what in other cases might be their first preview! I can't wait to see the new cast once they get more comfortable with their performances.

For what its worth, having seen the original company in both incarnations in the park - I'd say it was only by the time the show came to Broadway that they had really found that united "Tribe" vibe that made the production so special. That took two years - give this new group a few weeks - I'm sure they'll be better bonded.
I agree MC lets put away the swords. This cast has been thrown into a horrible position. A wholesale cast change with about a month rehearsal replacing a cast that has jelled for two years. How many active shows dare to do that or even think of that. If they still have not improved after a month .. well.I've seen shows come together in a week and then continue to jell. Patience and empathy please.

Quit that school. Right now. Stop paying back the student loans. Hair is a delightful show with a lovely score but it's about as deep as a puddle and written under the influence of hallucinogens.

For those who haven't followed the show too closely (including myself) - I know the original cast is on their way to London. Is that for a permanent West End production or are they going to start a Europen tour of some sort? I'm guessing the former, but didn't want to assume.

What school, what was the name of that course and who taught it? I want to make sure no one I know goes there.
I'm with Joe-HAIR is a thrilling and vibrant show that rests heavily on its cast to deliver the message, but a whole semester-gimme a break!!!
