Since the live audience recordings were done during regularly scheduled performances, they would very unlikely have directed the audience on how to respond. Newsies, Billy Elliot and Legally Blonde had specific live audience performances for their filmings (though Billy Elliott's was still a paid ticket performance), so they did request certain resctions from the audience.
I'd be more interested in knowing how much of the live performances featured in the recording versus what was shot in an empty theater. Supposedly most of the Rent recording was the footage filmed without an audience.
