Do any of you realize that this "honor" was bought and paid for? It's as much an honor as The American Airlines and The Ford Center/Hilton on 42nd Street.
There are some theaters which should NEVER be re-named - The St. James, the Music Box, the Winter Garden. They are sacrosanct. But I don't object to money being raised to re-name Henry Miller theater the Sondheim or the Martin Beck the Hirschfeld. I do loathe the Jacobs, the Schoenfeld and the American Airlines theater. I kinda like the Snapple Theater, though! :)
But IMHO, the coolest re-naming was when when Andrew Lloyd Weber bought the Strand in 2005 (formerly the Waldorf Theater) and re-named it the Ivor Novello, who had been pretty much forgotten. I'd love for London to have a Jessie Matthews theater, too.
I do love the design for the awning of the Sondheim. Very elegant with his signature written in lights.

I'll bet he's the only Broadway luminary to have what was (among other things) a gay porno house named in his honor.

I hadn't been on BWW for a few hours and forgot that money is a horrible and dirty thing, and everyone who uses it is evil.
Man, his face is absolutely priceless in those pictures as he finds out.

No Dear, I'm not taking anything away from the man. Of course it's deserved, the point is that fans had to pay to make it happen instead of the theaters owners who should be honoring the people that put asses in their establishments. Just like The Majestic should be The Andrew Lloyd Webber for his accomplishments.
amoni2, Stars on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame are paid for too. However, that doesn't make it any less deserving to whomever is getting one.
