And they're now confirmed, having just finished watching the pilot. What garbage. It probably is one of the strangest niche television programs I've ever seen. The cast is solid, but the show is downright terrible.
Far too many characters to tell what the story is about...the burgeoning romance between the two singers (Lea Michele and Cory Monteith); the burgeoning romance between Matthew Morrison and Jayma Mays; the actual romance between Matthew Morrison and Jessalyn Gilsig; the cheer team, led by the irreplaceable Jane Lynch; or is it a show about the glee club?
The pilot is about all those things and more, and it's much too much. The writing and characters are stereotypes of archetypes: the nerd teacher who wants to make good; the dykey cheer coach; the jock dating the cheerleader; the black girl with the big, soulful voice; the gay kid everyone beats up; and, of course, the pretty but nerdy high school girl who nobody notices until she opens her mouth.
And they all have voice over narrations. In fact, it's a lot like ELECTION, only not nearly as clever.
The cast does have a lot going for it - I'm eating my words when I say that Lea Michele is actually pretty perfect; Matthew Morrison is charismatic; Jane Lynch is absolutely hilarious. They succeed because they're all inherently likable.
But that's it. The highlight was "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat" sung to the kid in the wheelchair (cause every high school has to have one of those!).
I give it a few episodes. Or, if the ratings are terrible after it airs on Tuesday, I give it Tuesday.

Awww i just watched the Pilot too and LOVED it!! haha Its probably really difficult to try and introduce all the characters and yet keep the whole idea of the entire season in one epiosde. This was just the pilot they have to introduce whos who. I do think that they tried to do a little too much with all the story lines they introduced in this pilot. but i found it entertaining and just a cute show! And i have to agree about Lea, i was kinda questioning her at first but i thought she was fantastic!! And there were several moments that i just felt so damn bad for her
***SPOILER***
Like when she posted her myspace videos and the girls all sent mean messages to her she just looked so crushed!
***END OF SPOILER***
But I hope that this show can hold out for a little bit, i think its a nice change from the doctor or cop or reality shows out now! I am going to give it a few more episodes to really decide how i feel about it! but so far i enjoyed it!

I really enjoyed it, however I felt more like I was watching a movie, rather than a television show.
It's definitely full of stereotypes, which reminded me a lot of Mean Girls.

Posted: 5/17/09 at 8:06pmI thought that is was just ok. I am just happy that a show like this is on tv (musical theater actors and themes). May watch another episode.

Posted: 5/17/09 at 8:52pmIt is a pilot after all. There's alot to do in the pilot of a television series. You gotta introduce all the characters and a bit of background, show their relationship to each other and their projected path through the story but at the same time have a intriguing plot for the episode itself. Cuz remember, ya can't overload 'em with too much exposition... anyone?...
"If artists were machines, then I'm just a different kind of machine...I'd probably be a toaster. Actually, I'd be a toaster oven because they're more versatile. And I like making grilled cheese" -Regina Spektor
"That's, like, twelve shows! ...Or seven." -Crazy SA Fangirl
"They say that just being relaxed is the most important thing [in acting]. I take that to another level, I think kinda like yawning and...like being partially asleep onstage is also good, but whatever." - Sherie Rene Scott

Posted: 5/17/09 at 9:00pmI'm still looking forward to this. Even if the pilot is a little rough. Most pilots are. Shows don't tend to find their form until a few episodes in. I would love it if it followed the 'Popular' mold.

Posted: 5/17/09 at 9:05pmReviews and early word of mouth from critics and TV people is good. I have yet to watch the pilot, I still don't think the show will succeed given its topic but we'll see. It is a Ryan Murphy show after all, so it might take some time to get used to.

Yes, and then be all secretive about how to see it on line, lol.
