I listen to the cast recording of Women on the Verge and can clearly hear Laura's acting choices. It's a far more dynamic and flashy song than anything Patti got to sing in the show. It's taken a lot of listens to really pick up what Patti was doing with her songs. It's vocally a lot more subtle than you'd expect for the character who hijacked a motorcyclist while waving a gun in the air.
If Women on the Verge was still running, Patti might have had a better chance. That's not the situation we're dealing with. We have Laura with the super-flashy song and raves versus Patti with more songs but less bombastic material available for review.
Frankly, I'd be happy if Nikki M James won, but I'm not holding my breath. She gave such a sweet and heartfelt performance that makes even the most outrageous and offensive moments of BoM palatable. Laura gave a killer performance with a showstopping song and that's probably enough to win this year.
Does Patti have a shot? Technically yes since she's nominated. Realistically? She's probably not going to win.
Riedel is predicting that James will win.

Rieds says James "should win" not will, and how is Benanti the "Sure thing"? She has lost several times and failed to be nommed in what I thought was her strongest Bway offering: NINE?
But I predict his prediction and mine "will" happen.

He means James will likely win.
Rory O'Malley, the gay Mormon, will win, too. The only two major awards "Mormon" may not snag are Best Score and Best Actor in a Musical.

Good point.
Is Rory a gay Morman or is it his character?
It's between Clark and Benanti.
Honestly, if anyone is going to upset, I could see it being Tammy Blanchard. She's obviously a critic and industry darling--how else could you get nominated for such a thankless role?
I don't see that happening. Katie Finneran deserved her Tony for playing essentially the same role, and as good as Tammy was, she wasn't at the level of the other nominees.
CurtainPullDowner, Rory's character is a gay Mormon. He's the impetus for Turn it Off because his character just assumes that any Mormon with an internal conflict is hiding his homosexuality. Broadway.com just put up a video of him talking about his character in the show. http://www.broadway.com/shows/book-mormon/video/153585/a-month-of-mormon-day-25-turn-it-off-with-elder-mckinley/
No, I'm pretty sure Rory O'Malley is a gay Mormon himself.
Sorry to break it to you guys, but I have a better shot at winning Best Supporting Actress than Victoria Clark does. If she gets 3% of the votes, I'd be surprised.
I think Riedel's predictions are pretty close, actually, including James' win-they will honor the cast of Mormon through the two featured actors who will win. I do think Tony Sheldon has a shot in the leading actor category, however.
I think Riedel is right that Mantello could well take the award (and he deserves it!).
It will be an interesting evening, that's for certain.
I'm waiting to see if there's any sort of a Mormon "backlash" because of it's popularity. Like many people on here are now doing since it's gotten so big they're sick of it and I"m curious if the voters will be the same way.
chewey, Rory's a gay Catholic. It's explained in the video. Catholics =/= Mormons.

Why does everyone think that the Witch's entrance in Into the Woods is that difficult? It really isn't anyhwere near as difficult as "Miller's Song" or "Getting Married Today."
That said, I hope LuPone wins. She deserves more awards than Bernadette, IMO. (Not that I dislike Bernadette, I just think LuPone is the more talented).

I love this response because it's exactly why I don't want Sutton Foster to have the same number of Tonys as Patti.

^ Same. I also don't think Sutton (based on what I've seen and heard and believe fundamentally about the role of Reno) should win for Reno. Give it to Patina or hell, stage a total coup and give the award to Harvey for La Cage after declaring the others unfit....but not Sutton. Not this role.
I actually thought that Sutton was quite good as Reno, but, to me, it was because she was doing what people like about Sutton Foster. She can sing, she can dance, she's got great comic timing, but...there's just always something missing for me. I wish she was less unoffensive and likable. Plus I don't think she did anything revolutionary with the role.
"Plus I don't think she did anything revolutionary with the role."
No-she just sings and dances her ass off-incredibly well and with total charm. Last time I checked, thats what the Tonys like to honor. She provides a complete entertainment. She deserves the award.
Oh and for the Patti police, Patti is not more talented than Sutton or Bernadette, just talented in different ways.

I think, to some degree, that Sutton is like a female Lee Roy Reams, she would do almost anything to entertain an audience. If you wanted her to slit her wrists and bleed glitter, she'd do it. But there's that certain spark that someone like Patti or Bernadette or Sherie or Audra have that she doesn't. I'd put her into the same category as Victoria Clark, Rebecca Luker and even my beloved Donna McKechnie...the almosts who connect strongly in a role or two, but aren't "star" material.
If folks like Foster, Butts, Benanti, Rylance, etc win their 2nd Tonys, could we please get a split screen of the LuPone along with the winner? PLEASE? I'd love to see Patti's reaction to seeing younguns joining her as two-time Tony winners.
I have not seen Tammy Blanchard or Nikki James yet, but I can say that I am VERY hopeful that Laura Benanti will win. Her performance was a revelation to me....I had no idea that she could pull off a character like that, and so well! She nailed every moment that she was given...more than nailed it in fact. It was the kind of performance that should be remembered.
I am not a huge Patti LuPone fan, but I thought she was really great in WOMEN ON THE VERGE as well. I prefer that performance to her GYPSY by a mile.]
I love Victoria Clark.....her LIGHT IN THE PIAZZA performance is one of the greats, in my opinion, and I have loved her in every show I have seen her in. SISTER ACT ranks as maybe my least favorite of hers...not her fault. I just didn't think she had a lot of good stuff to work with.
TEAM LAURA ALL THE WAY HERE!
"I love this response because it's exactly why I don't want Sutton Foster to have the same number of Tonys as Patti"
I completely agree. I'd have to add though, I'm not sure Laura(or Vicki and Sutton for that matter) is up there with Patti, Bernadette et al as 2 time tony winners.

My money is on Patti. I don't have a lot of money, but it's on Patti...

I actually believe Patti did some wonderful work in that piece, but Benanti was hilarious. If anyone is winning from that show, it's her. That said, it's James. MORMON is going to sweep more than we think it will, or I wish it did.
