I said on the post about this year’s show that we need to start honoring our songwriters again - Schwartz, Menken, Shaiman, etc. They wrote the soundtracks of our lives.
Albert Brooks, but he also needs the Mark Twain prize.

I second the suggestion of Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman, Alan Menken, Stephen Schwartz, and Lynn Ahrens & Stephen Flaherty.
Jeanine Tesori, Susan Stroman, Paula Vogel, and Lynn Nottage could be candidates, considering they're among the most decorated women of their generations in their respective fields, and the KenCen is deeply conscious of spreading the wealth in terms of gender and race.
Other theatre folks who SHOULD be honored in their lifetime --
Elaine May (what are they waiting for??) Harvey Fierstein Nathan Lane Liza (discussed ad naeseum) Michael Feinstein Tommy Tune (what are they waiting for??) James Lapine Lydia Tár Audra McDonald Bernadette Peters Patti LuPone
People I expect them to honor in the next decade or so (whether all "deserve" it or not over others is a wholly different matter; these are populists who could draw starry tributes) ----- Chris Rock, Eddie Murphy, James Cameron, Kathryn Bigelow, Joel & Ethan Coen, Frances McDormand, Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Jr., Kevin Costner, Martin Short, Glenn Close, Sigourney Weaver, Tim Burton, Steven Soderbergh, RuPaul, Wes Anderson, Chuck Lorre (he's made a lotttt of money for CBS), Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, John Carpenter
Under a Republican presidency we could get David Mamet, Gary Sinise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kelsey Grammer, Jon Voigt, or Caitlin Jenner.
Theatre veterans who I think should receive Kennedy Center Honors are:
Alain Boublil & Claude-Michel Schönberg Betty Buckley Glenn Close Sandy Duncan Harvey Fierstein Nathan Lane Patti LuPone Alan Menken Liza Minnelli Tim Rice Stephen Schwartz Charles Strouse Tommy Tune
As for those who aren’t mainly known for theatre, but have worked in that medium:
Phil Collins Cyndi Lauper Frankie Valli Otis Williams
Next at the Kennedy Center 1 hr 2023 concert / performance New S2 E3 Cynthia Erivo & Friends: A New Year's Eve Celebration Ring in the New Year with a star-studded musical celebration on stage at the Kennedy Center. Read More
This is new on PBS (unless it's excerpts from the show). Comes on New Years Eve 8 pm for an hour and repeated again at 9 pm. Not much of a description on TVGuide.com.
"Under a Republican presidency we could get David Mamet, Gary Sinise, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Kelsey Grammer, Jon Voigt, or Caitlin Jenner."
Mamet, Sinise and Voight have all had influential, decades long careers worthy of consideration.
In spite of their political disagreements, Streisand received, without complaint, her Kennedy Center Honor from George W. Bush, who she had spent years lambasting. Charlton Heston received his from Clinton, under much the same circumstance.
Artistic accomplishments shouldn't be subjected to political dictates.

Kudos to the both of them to not let politics get in the way of accepting this award with dignity/class.

I believe ErmengardeStopSniveling was kidding with the “Under a Republican presidency.” I don’t believe the president has any actual involvement in selecting the honorees.

I was only half kidding. The president doesn't have a say to my knowledge, but usually presides over the event. As we saw with the Trump presidency, much has changed since the days of "liberal artists attend Bush or Reagan events" (KC Honors, inaugurations, WH concerts, etc). Whether that continues in future presidencies remains to be seen.
Tim Curry should be in consideration: one of the great character actors of all time, an exemplary voice actor, and an inadvertent part of so many people’s childhoods due to his run of family films in the nineties.
