This thread is a mess. Would it be nice if an A-list star came out? Sure.
Do they owe it to you or anyone else to do so? Nope. I don't care what age you busted out of the closet or what age we live in. I don't blame a star who despite successes onstage and on TV frankly doesn't have the film career he once did, living in America in the age of Trump. If you think you have the right to dictate when people should come out of the closet, you're just as bad as the homophobic assholes who keep people inside.
And flinging around unfounded accusations that Spacey is a sexual predator is disgusting.
Frankly, I think the insistence that queer people are obligated in some way to publicly announce their queerness is disgusting. And before anyone decides to call me heteronormative, I'm queer myself and have spent a long time advocating for queer visibility in the performing arts. But it's incredibly privileged to feel that you are in some way entitled to know who someone sleeps with and to claim it's their responsibility to the LGBTQ community to come out to the entire world. For many people in this community, particularly people who are not white cis gay men, coming out is a complicated thing that is often ongoing and evolving and doesn't have the linear trajectory you all seem to want it to have. The mainstream "gay rights" movement (and I put that in quotes because of its exclusionary nature) has yet to include huge pieces of the vast and diverse LGBTQ community, and until it does I feel that maybe we should be focusing less on pressuring celebrities to come out and more on actually recognizing the differentiated struggles of queer people who aren't white, cis, and monosexual.

They're not unfounded, they're unconfirmed, and I have been explicit that that is the case.
It seems that we have come to a crossroads in history where discourse no longer has an effect (did it ever?). America’s booboisie has put a man and his followers who are as joyfully ignorant and amoral as themselves into power, and they now feel free to pursue all of their dark id-driven urges: “Every man for himself! Amass as much stuff as you can! Screw everyone else! Those who can’t care for themselves deserve to suffer and vanish! Different people need to go!” These wraiths grasp their greed, selfishness, and ignorance to their breasts like Gollum and his ring, and the only thing that the rest of us can now do is look at them in disgust and say, “You are ignorant. And your ignorance makes you morally deplorable.” We can try to live our lives as (ignored) role models for intelligent, compassionate, moral, and sometimes difficult choices. And maybe we can wonder if a crisis will come that might inspire others to become smarter and better people.
I agree that the queer community has been lacking in serving the needs of those who aren't cisgender white men but...Kevin Spacey is literally all of those things.
Again, I don't think anyone here is forcing him (or anyone in the closet) to do anything. Yes, coming out is a complicated and endless process- I've been out for nearly 10 years and still deal with it, because we live in a heteronormative world and people still assume I'm straight. But the choice to not acknowledge it at all just feels regressive to a time where being queer was meant to be hidden and shameful. If someone with a huge degree or success and fame can't or won't even do it, then how the hell is anyone else supposed to?
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
Let's all just take a moment to appreciate this thread for it's one true positive contribution to society...the reappearance of SonofRobbieJ. THANK THE LAWD! That's WAY more interesting than Spacey hosting the Tonys. Or his sexual orientation. I do think Spacey's hesitance to come out at this point is sort of odd. He can do what he wants, I suppose. Coming out is always good for our community, but I don't think Spacey's coming out would have even fraction of the impact had it been in his higher-profile years.
And for the record, this year is my 30th anniversary of coming out, which coincides with the 30th anniversary of HATCH, Houston's LGTBQ teen support organization. I've been invited to speak at their big anniversary celebration seeing as I was one of their charter members (back when there were only three of us at the first meeting I attended). I'm SO EXCITED!

Kevin Spacey IS a big star, a legitimate tony winner, and a fine singer (see his bobby darin movie)
its not an obvious choice, and I think he will do well and bring dignity and class to the show as well as maybe attract some folks who may not normally watch the tony awards.
I have never 'come out' and I'm 72 and had no need to--but of course I am a nobody. I have my own personality and adjust accordingly to each personal situation. When a family situation arose I said 'you know I'm gay' to my Mother and Father [I was about 22], they said 'we know that Darling'.
If a stranger wants to know what I do with my D.I.C.K. then they remain a stranger.
All that an interviewer wants is the kudos of asking THAT question and gettng a revelatory response.
Every persons' journey is their own no matter how famous.
I love the fact that those 3 words 'he's gay' [and my silly response] has created such interesting debates.
So, a Tony host is announced and the first thing that pops out of someone's mouth is the host's sexuality. Sad.
It's the Tonys. The host announced is Kevin Spacey. You didn't think it would come up? I'm not sure it qualifies as "sad". I'm trying to remember the last time we had a male Tony host and the subject of sexuality didn't come up. Was it the heterosexual Gregory Hines, maybe? Oops! We're not supposed to acknowledge or recognize that he's straight. We're pretending everyone is asexual, right? Alan Cumming? HAHAHAHA!!! Just kidding. Oops! Sad. So (gay) I MEAN sad. That's the Dumpster's favorite word to tweet, isn't it? SAD!

That's a very pretty speech, but it has zero to do with this discussion.
I think he's a great choice - smart, talented, and classy. And as much as I'm a fan of Tina Fey, I think it's wonderful he has bona fide theatre creds here and across the pond.
I'm ignoring the sexuality conversation because it's irrelevant to him doing this gig.
Is it a given that Mr. Spacey will begin the show with "Hello Tony" singing that it's "so nice to have you back where you belong" (i.e. Radio City)? That's my prediction, but I guess it depends on what Dolly wants to perform on the show.
